Default "Jin Yong" or "Gu Long" - which of the two major wuxia writers has the cooler name?

"Jin Yong" and "Gu Long" are not the real names of the two writers who, during the second half of the 20th Century, came to dominate wuxia fiction writing. Of the two, who do you think had the cooler pen name?

I like the name "Gu Long" myself..."ancient dragon." It doesn't sound any more wuxia than that.

GL should be the "cooler" one, since he made it up and thus picked any character he liked.

JY took apart the last character of his name, so he was limited.

I wonder if there's a wuxia pen-name equivalent of the "what is your pornstar name" game.

No Contest whatsoever. Gu Long easily. I mean, people still think the dude is alive and that he is much older than Jin Yong.

You hear sometimes. Speaking of all these pathetic adaptations of Gu Long, it is often seen on forums "Blame Gu Long for it. He is the one that sits back and let the directors butcher his series." Of course, the average fan does not realize he died back in 1983 or something, even before Barbara Yung.

BTW, flyingfox, what is your version of the pornstar name?

    Is it

first name = first name of the first pet you ever had
last name = name of the street you grew up in

Or do you a different criteria.

Both died in 1985: Barbara Yung in May, and Gu Long in September.

Gu Long takes the cake for this one. When I first heard of Jin Yong, I thought it was a girl's name................

and you were disappointed when you found out it was an old man instead of a girl.

I feel that JY's name has a more grandeur feeling to it, sounds classy. While GL is a bit more mystical.

Jin Yong is both older than Gu Long, and wrote his books earlier.

Now, some people may think that is the case.

My Vietnamese friend said that too.

I think it has something to do with the Vietnamese translation of his name.

Yeah, the Jin part sounds normal (though it's still mostly used as a girl's name), but the Yong part sounds the same as the Vietnamese translation of Rong (as in Huang Rong), so it's not strange to think at first that the author is a lady.
