Synopsis

I'm VERY excited about this drama. It's based on one of my favourite books, 碧甃沉, and portrayed by my favourite actor, Wallace Chung.

This is a FANTASTIC series, with great actors, beautiful costumes and settings and above all, a tragic love story. Definitely worth watching, even if you're not a particular fan of stories set in Min Guo.

I'll definitely buy this DVD when it comes out. I love series and movies set in min guo. There's something about that era which evokes so much emotion, growth and sadness because it's the first time that the Han Chinese were truly discovering their identity after being under Manchu rule for 300 years, yet also a time of political upheaval with the coming Japanese invasion and civil war. China was so torn during this era. Think The Soong Sisters, Revolution, Ba Jin! One of my favourite recent HK series is Pretty Maid (script written by Mainland's brilliant Yu Zheng) also set in min guo. And I'm awaiting Fog of Dragons, another upcoming min guo series with Yuan Hong as the lead.

Based on the novel of Fei Wo Si Cun(匪我思存),"Too Late to Say I Love You/Bi Zhou Chen(《来不及说我爱你/碧甃沉》)".
Yin Jingwan saved a young man who was escaping from a rivaling warlord manhunt on a train. When she returned home, her parents arranged a marriage for her to childhood friend, but her fiancee was put into prison in Chengzhou for smuggling fire arms and illegal western drugs. Jingwan decided to go to Chengzhou to rescue her fiancee. But she did not know, this trip would completely change her fate.

I love this series! Just finished watching it a week ago and can't help myself but rewatch it again!! hahaha...i introduced it to my mom and she got HOOKED and finished all 36 episodes in 4 work days! Love wallace chung and li xiao ran in this series.. Love their acting...they delivered their lines convincingly despite some corniness of the script....just like what someone said previously, wish his character was more cunning and ruthless and gave those bad guys a good slap in the face...hahahahha...but he's also much more likable in this series versus the original novel (i didn't read the original novel but read comments/criticisms). At least I like the ending of the series much more than the novel.

The leads are amazingly natural in their portrayal. Qi Fang is sooooo suave as Cheng Jinzhi. Totally charismatic woman!

By the way, does anyone find the show too fast? I mean, there seemed to be a lot of cut-out moments. I wish it's slower when Wallace and Li Xiao Ran are on.

I totally agree! I hope it'd be an extended version with the DVD and hopefully director's cut. I like scenes where Peilin was impressed with Jingwan's subtle intelligence and also when they became sworn brother and sister, Peilin drank the wine as if it's poison. Those are very little things which deepen the premises of love btw them.

I have quite a few favorite scenes i don't even know where to start...hahahhaa...i'll list a few...they're not in any particular order...

- ep.26 after Jingwan left Peilin and he went to to the frozen Cheng River at night to reminisce...the music they played with the piba + the lonely/melancholic Peilin + beautiful night landscape make the scene really poignant and i really felt his pain of losing Jingwan

- ep. 24 Jingwan+Peilin Confrontation...Peilin pointing his gun at Jingwan and Jingwan telling him to shoot her...my gosh...such love and angst...never seen such a scene with soo much force!

- ep. 23 Jingwan's feigned drunkenness and Peilin's seduction...I thought Jingwan was really cute here and effortlessly seduced Peilin...and he completely fell into her trap...

- ep. 22 Confrontation/Fight...somehow i just really love to watch this couple argue...they're soo convincing...hahhaa...

and of course...most of the scenes of my favorite...Su Ying...

In the novel, Peilin wasn't forced by circumstances to give up Jingwan, as he was in the TV series. In the book, it was ambition that drove him to betray her. He wasn't in any immediate danger, and I feel that Jing wan, or indeed no reasonable person would be able to accept or forgive a betrayal in those circumstances. In the series, Peilin really didn't have much choice did he? If he didn't marry JinZhi, then not only would he lose his territories and his life, but all those innocent people would suffer as well. I completely agree with you in that had he explained the circumstances to Jing Wan, though she would've been obviously devastated, she would be much more understanding of his actions. I think that Jingwan has a big enough heart to realize that there are some things bigger than their love, and that perhaps it was necessary to temporarily sacrifice their relationship for a life and death crisis.

I know I've said this before, but it both gratifies and annoys me how much they redeemed Peilin in the TV series. I understand why they did it (you can't have a jerk as a male lead, after all.) But whilst it is nice to have a kind character, it really alters the nature of the tragedy of their love. In the novel, Peilin's fate was a result of his own actions, and he has nobody else to blame other than himself (the tragic hero idea where the hero's misfortune is not brought about "by vice and depravity but by some error of judgment"). In the series, their fate is the result of circumstances. Two different kinds of tragedy. I just happen to find the former more tragic.

There were times where I could not understand Jingwan's decision in leaving Murong Feng. I mean in those times, it's quite common for powerful people to have mistresses, but after watching parts of the series, I totally support Jingwan's decision to leave him. Jingwan is simply too good to be just his paramour. Dignity is also part of love and shouldn't be sacrificed. I also agree with her that if she lived under a mistress's name, her children would have an illegitimate status even if Peilin would legitimized them.

I actually like how much they humanized Peilin's character. He has compassion and empathy in his ruling and he's still brilliant when it comes to millitary affairs. He's just not ruthless enough to crush the oppostion totally and turning into a lovelorn person, he wasn't as sharp or lethal as prior to meeting Jingwan. From a pragmatic view, such a 'weak' hero might be annoying, but it was still wonderful to see someone ambitious soften due to effects of love, to let depths of love overcome him.

I like his sidekick Shen Jiaping a lot too. He's always very loyal, helping things out.

Kudos to the outrageuos Su Ying. Irritating but lovely pro. I love how she annoys the hell out of Jinzhi. Lovely retribution.

My exact sentiments. But wasn't this position also warranted in the TV series? I felt although the plot was changed a little, her stand and reason was very much the same. Maybe because I didn't watch the full sequence, might have missed some points. I like the part where she became angry and ran away when MRF promised her they have a lifetime to do the things he promised her to do. Then she retorted that hasn't he promised her enough and she doesn't believe in his promises anymore. Totally agreed with what she said although I felt sorry for MRF - he did what he had to to keep her.

I probably missed that scene coz I wanted to save the best for view on DVD. I like it when Jingwan felt cute, eg the scene JoleCole mentioned when she was seducing MRF so she can get away. She's soooo cute when pretending to be drunk and eating her noodles, while MRF was cuddling her cheek. Found that totally funny as well. Only Jingwan would come up with such a plot. I mean at that point she was already disappointed in MRF, but to escape, she actually suppressed her dignity and seduced her 'ex-husband'. Haha, love her guts and mind.

I also like the scene when she's persuading the captured general to live on, she confessed she totally believe in her husband. Then after their camp got bombed, she ran to him and said she would not leave. All the soldiers gave her a look of admiration and MRF went on to save the little soldier.........love this sequence.
