    Default Microsoft Frontpage

Is there anybody who is kind enough to teach me, step by step, how to use Microsoft Frontpage? I should sit down and take my time to look carefully at the Microsoft Frontpage Help page, but actually I just scanned it. After 30 minutes, I got so pissed because I couldn't figure out what to do. You can say that I'm really thick, not being able to understand something as simple as that. (I don't even know how to use sms or irc channel.) Okay, my bad, I'm clueless when it comes to computer science. In fact, I wouldn't even care about that if it wasn't for work purpose.

No need to say that I will be very grateful if there is a big heart guy/girl who can give me some help. Please, make your explanations as simple as possible. I only need to master the basics so that I can improve an existing website. In other words, don't bother to teach me too complicated stuff.

MS Frontpage shouldn't be too hard, if you already know how to use MS Word. It's so easy, the one I'm kind of puzzled about is Dreamweaver, which I haven't had time to explore yet.

What specifically do you need help in creating?

If I want, I can post some pictorial tutorial for you (If you're truly that thickheaded).

Once you use Dreamweaver, you'll never touch Frontpage again.
Better still, once you use database-driven content management systems for your webpages/sites, you'll cringe when you think of Dreamweaver.

Please, go ahead Suet Seung. Teach me what you know... Everybody says that this program is easy to use, but this is SO not true (in my opinion).

Because I AM really that thickheaded. I should get my hand on the next MS Frontpage for Dummies.

And I don't know what exactly I will have to create. I guess I'll have to improve the website functionality and do some "web design" (?). You know, the very basic stuff. My employer is expecting me to be able to use MS Frontpage.

Anyway, I just need to know the basics. Thanks in advance. Pictorial tutorial will be great.

Is it easier to use than MS Frontpage? If this is the case, then perhaps I should learn to use notepad instead... But how can one use a notepad to create a website? I don't get it...

Well, theres a lot, what would you like to learn first? How to make tables? pages with Iframes?

Or if you have no idea where to start, would you like me to explain each feature on Frontpage and what their functions are?

    Yes, please. ^^

At least, I'd like to know how to connect pages together. With hyperlinks.
I tried to open several pages before, but once I opened a new page, I couldn't view the other pages... So, to begin, I'd like to know how to create a "navigation structure".

Also, how can I change the graphics if there is no tool for that?

"Navigation structures" are different if you're using a table layout, i-frame layout, or frames layout. What kind of layout do you want?

What do you mean by "Change the graphics if theres no tool for that?"?

Well, a layout like those you find on firm/company websites.

I want to know if there are tools I can use to modify pictures, etc.

Thanks. I'm going to check it tomorrow. I'm busy doing my assignment right now.
But I think it's better for me to stick with one program, the one that will be the easiest to use of course!

To modify pictures, you need Adobe Photoshop, which I'm not exactly a master of yet. I only know a little, still learning.

Firm and company websites uses css, flash, and other complicated stuff that I wouldn't recommend for a person of your level of skills.

Well, I do know some websites that could help you in giving you tips about making websites, and about using html codes to modify your pages, a lot of which, if you know frontpage, can make the process faster than coding it on your own (manually). Those html codes are just there to tweak it a little. But if you want the links to those sites, I'll post them up too.

BTW, one last question, what are you using to upload your html pages to? FTP server? Web host?

Anyway, it's late, any tutoring will happen tommorrow, okay?

In a nutshell, imagine a beefier version of a blog, which is actually a type of database-driven content management system. Most of the design is done up in templates which you can switch with ease, and the content (text) is entered via structured/unstructured dialog windows.

A database-driven content management system separates design from content, and it is this separation that makes maintenance (updating, etc) so much easier. By using such a system to create all-in-one websites for, say, presenting lessons to students and explaining courses to parents, I just concentrate on getting all the important stuff (lessons, course information, etc) done, instead of tweaking "HTML templates" from page to page. If I want different background colours to denote different courses, I make the adjustments in only 1 file.

For a comprehensive explanation of content management systems, please see:
    1. Understanding Content Management Systems
    2. Related articles from the same site

If you want to try out some free content management systems which you can run on your computer without connecting to the internet or having a database server, you can try these:
    1. dbQwikSite and more importantly, the overview. Actually, the overview gives a very good explanation about content management systems in general. Read it if you want to skip the stuff above.
    2. WebMerge, and its tutorial.
    3. CityDesk for Windows.
    4. BuddyW - in German only.

There is a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's goodbye Dreamweaver!

And if you really want to go all the way, learn how to manage web servers and databases (PHP, SQL, etc), and you'll be able to use content management systems with a lot more power, breadth and depth than those listed above.

Never ever use tables for layout. They are a major pain in whatever body-part that you hate having pain in. Tables are for tabular data, period.

Framed layout died shortly after passage of the golden age of TVB.

Learn CSS. It might be a bit strange in the beginning, but you'll soon be glad for the effort. Your webpages will be lean and fast-loading, without all sorts of unnecessary proprietary code.

    HYS

PS: Even when you've switched to content management systems and swear by them, it still helps to be conversant (fluent is better) with HTML, especially if you want to code/modify the design template by hand, like I do.

The line 'I guess I'll have to improve the website functionality and do some "web design" (?)' and the questions you ask about connecting pages, creating navigation and changing graphics seems to indicate that you need a lot more knowledge than just the ability to use MS Frontpage to deal with the task that your employer has given you.

You need to understand what websites actually are and how they are created to meet specific goals and objectives. This is just like understanding what a purpose-built building is (e.g. a museum or research facility), and how each floor and/or room is there for specific purposes.

For this, I'd like to suggest:
How to Start / Create Your Own Website: The Beginner's A-Z Guide
    and related articles.
It will be slightly heavy-going for you and might seem to be covering all sorts of disjointed bits of information, but it will give you a useful overview of things.

And if you want to forgo all the above and "just do it", here are two tutorial sources:
    1. FrontPage Tutorial from Microsoft. It's for FP2000, but there are many similarities that will help you to use later versions.
    2. FrontPage Tutorial from Electric Learning.

    And some related resources.

before you trash dreamweaver you should understand the target user base of content management system (CMS) application and web development application.

CMS apps are targeted at the business end users who has little technical skills with the web. these users are only interested in adding, updating and removing contents from the website. they don't need to understand the underlying infrastructure of the website.

Whereas web development applications like Dreamweaver is targeted at the web designer/developer user base.
