You really can't avoid as its seemingly everywhere on the news: the U.S. Economy is in a full blown recession. In these trying times with massive corporate layoff and unemployment numbers rising every month, education become more important than ever. Though a college degree won't promise a life of ease and comfort it will most definitely make you more "recession-proof," especially in the uncertainty of the future that is to come.


I wanted to share this career guide to everyone here. It's a career guide from Saint Leo University that gives tips to help people plan on how to recession-proof their own career. While the opening poster seems to be a spammer, i'm keeping this topic alive as it's currently pertinent.

There are no way to recession proof any career, any profession will be affected to some degrees by a global recession.

Admittedly some are less affected by others, and this is the same as with the globalization efforts.

From the top of my head, the following jobs are somewhat less affected by the overall economics as they are essential community jobs:-
1) Doctors
2) Nurses
3) Policemen
4) Firemen
5) Sewage/ Garbage Disposal Specialist
6) Teachers

I would think that most civil service jobs are safe. And the demand for repo-men should be higher.

actually, teachers and policemen can also be hit since the state is also getting in debt. On top of that, jobs drop, taxes drop, welfare increases-->state cannot afford to hire as many teachers & policemen. Though on the upside, the government can also try to "create jobs". bleh

What about supermarket workers? From what I've heard, large food supermarkets are doing fine despite the recession. Although their food may not necessarily be the cheapest but still, everyone has to eat.

Even Wal-Mart's revenue is slowing down in the current american recession.

Worldwide, there are stores such as Woolworth's that are already been shut down due to the economic condition.

So supermarket workers are not really recession-proof.

Well Ren, my point was that, in terms of job sustainability [especially with the job market not doing well], Fast Food workers are pretty well off.
