Default Let's Watch: Queen Seon Duk

We've partnered with Crunchyroll to bring video content to spcnet.tv and I thought it would be interesting to have members start watching episodes together in forum series called "Let's Watch: ..."

The rules are simple, we'll watch an episode a day together and comment/critique on the episode. You can cheat of course and watch the next episodes ahead, but I think it will be more fun to restrict it to 1 a day.

So to start, Let's Watch: Queen Seon Duk.

    Episode 1:
    http://www.spcnet.tv/Korean-Dramas/Q...e-1-ep933.html

    Ongoing Episodes list:
    http://www.spcnet.tv/Korean-Dramas/Q...s-pID1668.html

P.S. We're also looking for members to help us fill in the episode guides for our readers, so please contribute!

I am not sure if you should.

There has been a number of archeological bombshells, such as a strong possibility that the historical queen may not even be Korean, but a European-looking person of Scythian ancestry, based on DNA testing of retrieved bones which could explain the strict caste system in the Kingdom of Silla.

I've already seen 22 episodes or so, I'll probably continue when I have time. Maybe an episode a day.

I am talking about the possibility of having to cast an Iranian looking actress for the role of Queen if there is a remake in say 10 years from now.

From what we know, the queen and her cousin were the last of pure-blood Scythian rulers; they died out and were succeeded by mixed blood nobles.

I don't understand why you're bringing this up when the admin just invited people to watch the drama series. We're not watching a historical documentry.

Because the race of cast is wrong.

I'm not sure if you're looking for suggestions for "Let's Watch", but I think it'd be nice to have a poll running during the previous drama to see what future show members may be interested in watching together. It might garner more interest and motivate involvement, especially for people who may not be interested in or have already seen the one show that's been randomly selected.

    .
Incorrect or no, she has a babyface. Isn't the character supposed to be regal? Anyway having missed many TV shows, any show would be fine with me.

She looked like Naomi Campbell rather than say Christiana Amanpour.

I don't see any more chatting on let's watch. Is there another thread? I want to watch Dae jang Geum again or last dance again. I know.. but I have had so many changes in my life these last few months. Even a K-drama that's familiar is comforting.

Bidam is an idiot *** and a big disgrace to his beautiful and supremely smart mother. I too would have served her devotedly.

I don't see the point entirely relevant, in a drama sense. Even if QSD is a historically based drama, it is still a drama - more or less inferring the freedom and creativity inherent in fiction.

Since when is the ethnic authenticity a major factor in casting? I suppose it is somewhat desirable in a historical drama, but, I would personally prefer ones that can act and are suitable for the role than just looking and being the right "race" for the part.

Artwork throughout history hasn't been entirely authentic in ethnicity...Renaissance artwork, especially religious dedicated ones, no?

DNA retrieval from bones found in the 600's? I would like to see the research for myself before I let "strong possibilit[ies]" in archaeological/scientific findings to start thinking that DNA evidence is the be all and end all on the ethnicity of QSD herself. Unless, the preceeding Shilla line demonstrates consistent Scythian genetics, and also the validity of the DNA source (proof that the bones are QSD's bones?) points to QSD remains.

Hypothesis: QSD gains a few, if not many, political enemies. Not wanting to be disturbed in death, a 'stand-in' is kept in her coffin, while she is secretly buried somewhere else. Possiblity? Heck yeah...anyone who has studied ancient history would realise the practice...not limited to Asian cultures either.

Of course, I'm biased too, because I think Lee Yo Won did a superb job.

Incidentally, have I seen you at the INTJ Forum JonDoe? Or maybe I'm thinking of a similar username.

Sorry if this post is in the wrong thread. thinking of watching this series. but is this more a romace series (like winter sonata) as compared to some fighting involved (e.g jumong)? Or closer to that series about the "four gods"? (direct translation from mandarin). Thanks much.

I wouldn't categorize this drama as romance. It doesn't use it as a focus, rather there's more political conspiracy, political battles, some hints of romance as it does in anyone's life, but there's no silly love triangle where the whole storyline would focus completely on it (as far as I've watched). I think there's a good balance. There is fighting involved and characters battling wits to either get what they want or reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Essentially, this takes place before Confucian beliefs, so there's a lot of things you wouldn't see in a historical drama in a later period.

I have a thread on this, if you want more information.

Thanks for the info, Suet Seung. I will let you know again if I decide to check out more on this series. So I will not need the "thread" now.
