HONG KONG : Golden Horse award-winning actor Nick Cheung has forked out HK$200,000 (S$40,000) to send his actress wife Esther Kwan for artificial insemination, in hopes of getting a male heir, Hong Kong media reported.

2009 had been a good year for the Hong Kong actor who won multiple awards for his role in the 2008 film "Beast Stalker".

Cheung had previously commented on his recent wins and said that he could "die without regrets", adding that "heaven has given me everything I needed so I have no complaints".

After his wins in 2009, Cheung's popularity and acting fees skyrocketed. Despite having both fame and fortune, the 44-year-old veteran had a lingering regret: He has no male heir to continue his bloodline. The couple have a three-year-old daughter, Brittany.

When filming for "Beast Stalker" began late last year, Hong Kong media reported that co-star Nicholas Tse's wife, actress Cecelia Cheung, was pregnant.

At the time, Cheung told reporters that he envied Tse and expressed his yearning for a second child.

"I am so envious. I really want to have a lot of kids, but it is not something I can achieve simply by desiring it, I would still need Heaven's blessing. I hope to have four children because my daughter will be lonely when both I and my wife pass away," he said.

Following that candid remark, the actor also said laughingly that he would ask Tse for the "secret recipe" if Cecilia turned out to be pregnant with twins, adding that he would gladly "pay for it".

Months later, Hong Kong media reported that Cheung had been buying all sorts of Chinese herbal medicine to boost his virility and get his 45-year-old wife pregnant.

More recently, Cheung had reportedly turned to a celebrity fertility specialist for help. He underwent tests and heeded the specialist's suggestion to send his wife for artificial insemination.

Kwan had reportedly announced she will retire to support her husband's efforts.

Damn I thought he donated money to the Haiti relief effort when I saw the title in the previews (only partially displayed).

    Don’t care about his blanks.
What are you fighting for? Just mix them into pissing beef balls, stupid.

THat's what I thought too... I guess not... I wonder why people only seem to help people of their own race/nationality when big disasters like this happen???

Ditto here, though I did think "forks out" was a strange way of saying "donates."

It'd be funny if he ended up with 4 daughters.

    "fork out" doesn't mean donate.

And if he ends up with more daughters, he can seek advice from Jet Li, who has four girls.

The guy owe people of Haiti nothing so what do you expect from him? It's not his responsibility for the well being of the people of Haiti. He is 44 and his wife is 45 so if they want to have more children, it's only common sense for him to have it ASAP before too late. Regarding why people only seem to help their own race/nationality, it's is nature. All species care about their own kind first before others. Black is no different.

They always can come to the USA to get what they want. There is something called sex selection and it's available in the USA. I wish them the best. Hope they will get the Male Heir they need.

I don't get how anyone can link the title to Haiti. Haiti has never came into my mind when I read the title.

I didn't realize Esther Kwan was that old.

Trien Chieu - I'm sure they have sex selection in HK too. These celebrities are rich and they often get what they want but good luck to them!

I did not know that Sex Selection is available in HK since sex selection is illegal in mainland china and most of the countries. I think couple should have the right to choose the gender of their child if they want to as long as they pay for it. It's pretty much none of other people business. Yeah, good luck to them.

To Jiang Bao, Trinie and Lady Zhuge:

A similar thought struck my mind actually. I thought Nick forks out that amount of money to sponsor for the cause (Haiti) in some ways.

Well, I did not say that he owed them anything. However, IF you have money and people are in trouble, then it is good to donate money to help out. If you say that then what about everyone else that has money and has donated? Are you saying that they owed the people of Haiti something?? They are donating and helping out because they have a big heart and care about anyone that is in trouble, not because they feel that they owe them anything. Just because you are selfish and don't want to help out does not mean that others don't. Oh yea, but the people in Haiti are black so of course you don't give a care about them...

Why would they need to come to the US for sex selection??? Shouldn't HK have that as well?? I am not sure but if not, they have money so they can get anything they need.

    Race card as usual.
As for sex selection, I did not know that it's available in HK because it's not allowed in China.

Maybe people around, including myself, have been too concerned about the Haiti diseaster that unconsciously, our involuntary mind links to the diseaster as we read the semi-revealed thread title.

Me too! I saw "Actor Nick Cheung forks out HK$200.000 in ..." and thought it was about Nick doing charity fundraising until I entered the thread and the rest of the topic name showed up.

However, even though it is their private life, having a kid at age 45 is still highly dangerous, even if Esther goes Caesarian. Also, her eggs might be unhealthy unless they want to use sponsor eggs for the IVF.

Poor Esther! If she doesn't get pregnant soon, then I hope they adopt a son. I don't want her to quit acting!

Prior to the birth of their daughter Britanny, Esther miscarriaged twice. Nick admits that in his interview. Therefore I do think it will be very difficult for them to conceive another child, due to Esther's increasing age.

p.s Is male heir really that necessary?

Yes, especially those Chinese who still pray to ancestral altar. Also, someone to carry on the family name is also important.

not just the chinese, didn't king henry viii wanted a son so badly he had happily 'disposed' wives after wives in the hopes of getting one?

so yeah, it can be very important, depending on mindset.
