Hi Tifftiff, thanks for reminding me- he was indeed Au Yeung Ha in the 80's LOCH! In fact he was so charming in that role (and I thought Felix so boring) that even as a kid I wanted Huang Rong to end up with him! But that's way off topic!

Just found out from your lead that his name is Wong Wan Choi- and he moved over to ATV some years back, am unsure how active he is in acting these days. The interesting thing that I had forgotten is that he was Yang Xiao in the 1986 version of HSDS!

I do live in the States these days- and of course I was kidding about the questionaire for a HSDS club... I think everyone should be part of the club... even those who have never heard of HSDS!

I'm talking about DGSD 1997 with Felix, Benny & Carmen though. He was the Nameless/Sweeper Monk. I still remember him.

I've watched 3 versions of this series and soon to be 4 with Ady's and I have to say, I love Gigi Lai's ZM the most. She was strong, cunning, and solid yet showed necessary emotions/contemplation when she became more soft hearted. I love Kitty Lai's ZM as well but because I think HSDS 86' was a bit choppy, not as thorough and the dialogue wasn't as impressive as HSDS 2000 thus HSDS 2000 still remains a classic to me. Even though there was much opposition to Lawrence's ZWJ but he wasn't that bad, his ZWJ showed more emotions and gentleness towards ZM than Tony's, which made it overall more enjoyable.
i have not watch any other version of hsds except the movie but i agreed with you.

i loved sharla's zhao min. she was smart, cunning, and stubborn, but no where near as cartoonish as the 2003 version. it's like they are totally different characters. the only resemblence i see between those two are their names.

i want to see ady's version of zhao min. maybe i'll finish the series then.

I thought that was one of the most ridiculous scenes in HSDS03.

Also, I can't remember if this is in the novel, but in the beginning of HSDS 03, ZWJ's mom comes flying out in order to capture the HSDS on this gigantic and very fake looking kite! Then she gets blown off by this stupid animated tornado/twister. I remembered laughing so hard because the animated features were so ridiculous!
haha yeah i remember that scene! so i take it that was added in and wasnt included in the original novel? i wouldnt know though, i've never read it before. but yeah, those were a few pretty funny scenes
i dont remember the beginning scene actually...i remember her on the kite, but not the flying off part. anyway. its silly.

I was waiting for Vicki Zhao to come out and say we got Punked or something.
    haha! punked.

It's a comparison of the same scene from each version shown one right after another. It's interesting to see the same lines said, yet giving such a different effect in each one. After watching these videos I still definitely like 86' better- Tony Leung just gave off such innocence that none of the others conveyed. Adam Cheng as ZWJ just seemed confused... I loved the wedding scene where the ZM tells him to come with her and he's like now... and she's like yes now. It made me laugh so hard.

I liked the 86, 00, and 03 versions of HSDS for dif reasons. Tony Leung and Kitty Lai portrayed a sweet young love. Gigi Lai was cool and Lawrence worked well with her, even though he was a bit too old to play ZWJ I don't think he did so bad. Alec Su and Alyssa Chia had probably the most sweet/romantic scenes I thought- I do like that scene where he hugs her from behind.

This person does a song comparison too, it's a really long video though, but I was surprised by how many songs the 86' had considering it didn't even have a different ending theme.

Now I just need to wait for the Deng Chao and Ady An version to come out so that I can watch it and compare to these. HSDS is like a hobby for me.
oh, and thanks for the playlist! it was a cool comparison thing.

Which version has the plastic bags as ice bag?

I've made an error in my other post, I meant that Kenneth Tsang was the coolest XX ever. He was also HSY (Huang Rong's dad) in LOCH 84, and Tony's master in Duke of Mount Deer. I cried when his character died.

The pictures of the Wudang heroes dress as priests, but arent they secular students? at lease 3 of them were either married or engaged right?

Hi Sunnysnow, sounds good- happy to migrate over! Though I'll save the comparison videos to savor at my leisure.

Tifftiff, the 1994 version has ZM freezing in the 'ice' at some point, which consists of plastic bags wrapped over the sets! Very amusing!

Huumanshadow, yeah, I think that inconsistency was bemoaned a few pages back when the pictures of the Wudang heroes was first posted- its disappointing because it makes them look like interchangeable extras rather than the distinct personalities that they are, but I hope the acting will be able to overcome the costume deficiencies!

Shellie, I too hope that this next HSDS will be able to attract you enough to watch the whole thing- its a very cool story, with awesome characters, so I'm always enthused about people seeing it for the first time!

Okay, see everyone over at Sunny's new thread!

I'm watching this with the Jiang Hu English fansubs, and something is really bothering me.

Can someone explain why everytime the Shao Lin Sect is mentioned ... the characters say "Seng Ren Pai" (or something else) instead of "Shao Lin Pai?"

The subtitles say "Shaolin" each time, but the actors clearly do NOT, so this is really confusing. In addition, if the SERIES doesn't use "Shaolin," then neither should the subtitles. You should be translating what the characters in the SERIES say, not the in the novel.

The word "Shaolin" is already confusing as hell, because the actual "Shao" character is not pronounced as it should be. Add to that the confusion caused by stupid American crap animated shows like "Xiaolin Showdown" ...

Why the hell did Zhang Ji Zhong change the name of the sect? Is he a damn Buddhist monk and doesn't like how the Shaolin Sect is portrayed in this novel or something?

News flash, ZJZ ... almost every character in Yi Tian Tu Long Ji is an asswipe. Zhang Wu Ji, Xiao Zhao, and the Wu Dang Taoists are pretty much the only ones portrayed in a positive light. You produced the damn thing, you should know it.

PrinceKrillo, I heard that it was China censorship. Zhang Ji Zhong had to go back and basically overlapped the part where they said shaolin and replaced it with something else. If you listen carefully, you can tell that the voice is different when they say Shaolin in the series.

Thanks, I should have figured it was the Chinese government meddling in ZJZ's affairs.

Maybe this is why ZJZ put those bits about "government corruption" into Journey to the West (2012) and created even more controversy.

ZJZ and the government really don't like one another.

Don't really understand why the government needs to edit out "Shaolin." Do they expect people to be oblivious to its existence? Or do they not like how it's portrayed (considering all of the monks are pretty much douche bags in the series, especially Cheng Kun, being the primary antagonist)?

I have to say that it's fantastic how Zhang San Feng and the Wu Dang Taoists are portrayed as noble and righteous ... while all of the other sects in the novel are pretty much conniving and petty.

Hi. I'm a passerby only and I passed by here because this thread has been revived recently and got me a little curious. After checking out what this series is about (I've watched older versions of this series but not this 2008 one) I cannot help but to drop by to say that I have never come across such an ugly Zhang Wu Ji (or main actor who is supposed to be playing a handsome guy) in my entire life!! Who is he?! I mean he is not ugly as a man on the street, but as Zhang Wu Ji or an actor acting as a handsome protagonist, he is pretty hideous looking!!

It's not. The name "Shaolin" was made trademark a few years ago, and the voiceovers are an attempt to avoid a lawsuit. Presumably, the production company thought they could get the rights to use the Shaolin name, but something must have broken down when talking to the Shaolin Temple.

The other piece of censorship is that the original book and voices specified that the Ming Cult looking for Xiao Zhao were Persians. This may have been imposed by the government, or just an internal production decision.

It's actually the other way around. The Chinese government loves talking up their efforts at stamping out government corruption, and it's a pretty common to find it a topic in a lot of historical shows.

Every major group had its bad apples: Qingshu definitely counts as Wudang's.

Zhang Wuji is a pretty hard character to cast: of all the productions I've seen, the only one that was on the money is HSDS 1986 with Tony Leung. Deng Chao's depiction is a bit different from the Wuji of the novel, but I think that his performance makes up for both that, and his looks. And to be honest, I think that he looks quite decent overall. The main problem is what they did with his hair.
