If you constantly lower the bar just to "win," then you really haven't won anything.

Oh...just thinking about a certain somebody who might be headed for an easy opportunity somewhere else in the world because he wasn't good enough to make it closer to home.

Me? I'd rather never get it than have the bar artificially lowered just so I could.

I shouldn't say too much more; I'm not at SPCNET to start fights.

I should add that this person needs to walk the walk if he's going to talk the talk, but I don't see that happening.

How do I say no to people trying to set me up with guys? So far, my workfriend, my boss and a lady at church want to set me up with a guy. I really can't be stuffed. How do I say no? Or should I just go to dinner as a form of politeness and never go out with the dudes again?

Why won't they just leave me alone as a content single person?

An irony of Chinese cultural attitudes: if you gave Chinese people the freedom of unlimited choice, they would, by force of habit, likely choose to put themselves back under an authoritarianism. The Chinese culture has made such fetishes of stability and harmony that they'd willingly give up their self-sovereignty to authoritarians in exchange for stability/harmony. It's a consistent, repeating pattern throughout Chinese history...from long before the Qin Dynasty to the present day.

In this sense, the Chinese are the polar opposites of Americans, who would willingly surrender stability/harmony if that were the price of self-determination.

Neither Hong Kongers (they want more) nor the folk on Taiwan want to put themselves back into authoritarian governments. Why do people always talk about Chinese Democracy as though it were a myth? It exists. On Taiwan. And it's flourishing.

Do you raise the bar each time you succeed? Where should the bar be set? At the median, the average, 75 percentile or 90 percentile? With respect to general population or your peers?

There's also the fact that the higher you climb, the more difficult it is to surpass your peers... so when is it ever enough?

I told them if I am to attend, I want to go as a group dinner or lunch. I really feel strange spending 2+ hours with some dude I have never met. I have no problems with making friends, but I hate when the expectation put on you that you must have a 2nd date or get married. Some lady I met for the 1st time told me stuff I should do in order to marry her son who I had never even met. It's terrible.
