Story outline:

Story synopsis:
On the eve of the 1911 Revolution, a time of troubles, Nan Shan Zhuang owner Yang [should be Duan] Muhai is making preparations for the fire/flare festival. Muhai is very wealthy. With the help of the Qing government looted people's wealth, his family lives in extravagance. Muhai's favorite is the youngest daughter Ai Yue, bright and intelligent, very understanding towards others but she is very clear on the lines of love and hate, she is not like other family members always ordering people around, shouting at the servants. Enmity developed between Ai Yue and servant girl Ah-Ci due to a small matter. Ah-Ci is a silly girl, no matter the time of day she likes to dance with bamboo pole and smoke box, sings folk songs. Her singing infected/influenced Ai Yue, always being mischievous with Ah-Ci. At the fire/flare festival is a handsome bright young fellow named Liu Bo En and Long Chulai, four young people meeting each other, get along very quickly.

Ai Yue gradually falls for Bo En, but she's too proud and unwilling to reveal her feelings. Instead this lets Ah-Ci to have the opportunity to be with him. Ah-Ci is passionately in love with Bo En. Long Chulai admires Ai Yue, but because of his ugly looks he keeps it to himself, can only secretly love Ai Yue.

The 1911 Revolution erupts, Muhai's family meets hard times, Bo En is assigned to Beijing, Ai Yue is forced to fulfill a childhood marriage contract - but is sold by her heartless husband to a notorious opium lord. Intead the ruthless Wang Kun is moved by Ai Yue's Sandao tea, a friendship arises b/w the two people and he also finances Ai Yue's tea garden.

Muhai suddenly dies, putting the heavy burden of the Duan family on Ai Yue's shoulders; on one hand she has to develop the tea garden, on the other she has to subside internal friction. For a while she is mentally and physically exhausted, fortunately Ah-Ci and Long Chulai comes out to help. As time wears on, Ai Yue developes a subtle feeling for Long Chulai, cannot say whether it's love or friendship.

The tea garden is becoming a success, Sandao tea becomes a sort of a local trademark. The members of the Daun family, under Ai Yue's training, each learned survival skills, they are no longer useless people who only eat and drink. At the same time Bo En returns, but Ai Yue discovers that her relationship w/ Ah-Ci has grown apart.

In 1915 Yuan Shi Kai proclaims himself the new emperor. The movement to protect the country starts in Yunnan, Ai Yue donates a massive amount of money to help the new army bring down Yuan. Long Chulai and Bo En join the movement together, heading go off to Yixing, defeats the northern army in the famous "Battle of Lu Na," but news about Bo En's death is transmitted from the front.

Ai Yue and Ah-Ci continue to manage the tea garden, both of them reconcile. Ai Yue unconditionally gives the tea garden to all the workers; as time passes, people start to forget the name of Ai Yue, only know that she comes from Dali and so they call her: "Dali Princess."

"Dali Princess" is a 30 episode TV series jointly produced by the Dali state government, Dali Tourism Association, China Great Wall Cultural Center, and Zhuhai Film and Television company. On the morning of the 20th, "Dali Princess" held an opening ceremony in Dali. The series' main actors Lin Hsinju, and Liu Tao were hugging each other in front of reporters, likes two sisters, one would've never guess that in "Dali Princess," the two of them are a pair of "enemies."

"Dali Princess" is about the prosperity and downfall of a prominent Bai family around the 1911 Revolution. It's a large-scale, made-to-order TV serial to promote the Dali Bai ethnic culture, its natural scenaries, and its people and history. Lin Hsinju plays spoiled rich girl of a Dali Bai ethnic Duan family Duan Ai Yue; Liu Tao plays the Duan family servant Ah-Ci. Ah-Ci's parents and younger brother were killed by Ai Yue's father in a fire, and when she grew up, she returns to Dali to exact revenge - to snatch Ai Yue's away through some sort of distorted love, kicks Ai Yue out of the house, who ends up destitute in a Ma Bang clan.

On the discussion of her own role, Lin Hsinju expressed this time it is very different. "Other than Princess Jian Jing, the rest were all gentle (roles), perhaps the one people having a more profound impression of is HZGG, like those gentle and delicate roles. So this time I think, she is one who matures, her innermost feelings matures and changes, therefore this is where she attracts me in the first place."

She said: "In terms of good food, I like the local snack 'ba ba,' and also that 'kao ru shan' the most." In regards to Hsinju's first time in Dali, Liu Tao naturally has become her free tourguide. And after the various kinds of food on foreigner street has gotten Lin Hsinju's attraction, the two of them started searching for good food. The staff meals are typical; even if it's delicious, eating it like this everyday, after a few months you'd get sick of it. Today the princesses tell the us, how they resist eating the staff boxed lunch.


The staff boxed lunch: little meat, lots of beans

Lin Hsinju: She took us to foreigner street from the first day, we went to the bar to eat hot pot, roast crab. After that we've been eating the boxed meals, the kind that does not have any meat, there's ground meat, the preserved meat is fatty, mushrooms, different kinds of bean. Also there's Dali cookies. I thought the Dali cookies were delicious. I bought $2, they bought $1 .....

These two princesses when they just arrived to Yunnan along with the production team, they had plans to stroll around on their free time, to enjoy the beautiful Dali sceneries. But they hadn't thought that the shooting of "Dali Princess" turned out to be very intense every single day, this bored the both of them to death. Hence, they could only puts all their limited time and energy into improving their daily meals. Now, eating — — has already become they biggest pleasure.


Eat less of boxed meals, search for good food

To them, the staff meal is definite not enough. Privately, if there's something good to eat certainly cannot forget about your good friend/sister.

Liu Tao: For instance, today I'd say there's a good pizza place, she'd say I know, I know, I want to go too. And then would say I know there's a good hot pot place, really?, let's go next time, something like this. Yeah, because filming in this type of a non-urban place, we can only find some happiness from eating. Because the places we shoot at have beautiful sceneries. We have already gotten used to the life of living here. That is say we want to make up it to us, eat less of boxed meals, right, eat some good food.

"Princess" falls in love with the Puerh tea

Yesterday Princess Diary recorded the "princesses'" food, today of course talk about what they drink; what the princesses drink is Yunnan's specialty — — Puerh tea.


"Princess" uses Puerh tea to fight grease

Lin Hsinju: (Puerh tea) Before it's soaked it looks very black, but the very good that kind of Puerh tea, if you have eaten very greasy stuff, drinking that would really gets rid of grease. I think it's very good tea. (laughs)

Actually it's not just our princess Hsinju who loves Yunnan's specialty Puerh tea, every production crew that has been in Yunnan would have been overflowing w/ the smell of fragrance from Puerh tea. And to Hsinju, not only can she enjoy Puerh tea herself, but also makes good gifts.


"Princess" gives out scented tea as gifts

Lin Hsinju: I bought a lot of Puerh tea to give to people. Last time when I returned to Hong Kong to film I bought over ten boxes, they were awfully heavy. This tea thing I think makes very good gifts to our elders. If giving it to friends, the tea can help them lose weight, I think it's great. No wonder Hsinju loves Puerh tea this much, as a matter of fact it's biggest effect is it may help in losing weight. Since it is a good thing, the "princesses" would definitely share it together. Every day a pot of Puerh tea, is Liu Tao and Lin Hsinju's necessary drinks on the set.


"Princess" understands tea, not jade

Lin Hsinju: I tell everybody that Dali is like a fairyland, good place for the gods to live.
Liu Tao: There's also a lot of people who buys Burmese jade in Dali, as long as you don't buy fake ones, actually you can find good bargains.
Lin Hsinju: She (pointing at Liu Tao) knows a bit more, I don't don't.
Liu Tao: Actually it not how good it is (jade), it the thought that counts.
Lin Hsinju: What if they open w/ the prices of $1,000, I don't even know how do negotiate for a bargain.
Liu Tao: Actually as long as you like it's fine.
Lin Hsinju: I think the most important thing is you like it yourself.

Boxed meals off duty, egg friend rice on

Today, the staff box lunch to the two princesses is that, it officially goes "off duty." Don't know when the two of them found a little restaurant on the set, today they especially ordered fragrant egg fried rice from that place.


"Princess" left alone, seeks someone to accompany her

After eaten just a little, Liu Tao had to go to another set, leaving Hsinju behind, unavoidably feeling somewhat lonely. Can't help it, quickly look for someone on the set to accompany her. It's just that the "princess" did even have the chance to go forward, everybody swarmed in, in comparison the director's cooking skill is pretty good. Hsinju also rushed over to join in. It looks like, this egg fried rice is quite attractive to her.

Dali has beautiful sceneries, just like a fairyland, Lin Hsinju says these past three months she feels like a goddess, uninfluenced by wordly matters, actually she is a bit plaintive. As a meat lover there's no meat locally for her to eat, even her MSN nick is changed to "No Meat Makes One Skinny."

Lin Hsinju says that, Dali's vegetables are very fresh, a lot of varieties, but hardly any meat to eat. Some people raise chickens, but mostly they are dry, don't look too apetizing, she misses Taiwan's delicious food. "Dali Princess" will wrap in few days, she will first return to Shanghai, then head back to Taiwan to celebrate new year.

Lin Hsinju heard how Liu Tao received Mama Li, it almost made her stumble, she says she actually tips her hat to Liu Tao, a former People's Liberation Army member, a very open person, but for love she's willing to learn how to become a good wife. Lin Hsinju said, her personality is energetic and lively, also have been spoiled, it's very hard to imagine that if one day she has to serve her future mother-in-law, how should she go about doing it.

Lin Hsinju and Liu Tao each have a box [or luggage] of snacks, both generously share with the crew each time. The snacks are limited, and when the snacks started to dwindle, Liu Tao already went into action, started to look for places with good food! Dali is known for its eight strange things, one of them is er kuai. That thing is a kind of cake/cookie made from rice, wrap it with fragrant Yunnan ham, then add any condiment according to your own taste, refreshing to the mouth, attractive flavor. Liu Tao discovered a small place selling er kuai at the foot of the mountain, as soon as tasted it, she immediately fell in love with this Yunnan delicacy, she immediately told her "eating buddy" Lin Hsinju the news. Hsinju, who has gotten tired of eating packaged snacks, started drooling while listening to it. During a rest period on the set, immediately had Liu Tao show her the way, hand in hand they went off to eat. As a result after one try Hsinju is immediately hooked by er kuai!

Lin Hsinju Filming On the Snowy Mountain Despite Being Sick, Shooting Quiety Wrapped

Shooting lasting more than two months, "Dali Princess" finished shooting yesterday. The last scene took place on Yunnan Jade Dragon mountain b/w China and Myanmar/Burma. The elevation of Jade Dragon mountain is more than 400 meters, a lot of healthy people have an adverse effect from the high altitude. And previously during the shoot on Jizu Mountain, Lin Hsinju already went through a lot of suffering and caught a cold from the cold mountain wind. After decending from Jizu Mountain, had to rush nonstop to the snowy mountain by car throughout the night. When they ascended not even halfway to the the snowy mountain, Hsinju already had high altitude sickness, got a splitting headache, had difficulty breathing, the crew suggested that Hsinju temporarily rest at the hotel at the bottom of the mountain, but Hsinju thought that Chinese New Year is coming up and all of the crew is waiting to wrap up shooting and going home, she cannot delay the entire crew's time because of her, so she clenched her teeth and continued up the mountain. After shooting the last few scenes on the snowy mountain, Hsinju immediately felt completely weak, and most of the crew also was bothered by the high altitude, have no more strength left. Therefore although it was the very last scene, there wasn't the usual cheering and jumping for joy, no applause, not even smiles, Hsinju said "there was only the howling wind of the summit and dead-tired exhaustion. . . " with a bit of sadness, "Dali Princess" smoothly wrapped up shooting.

Although the shooting was difficult, but the crew left with a beautiful memory of scenic Dali. Liu Tao is finding pleasure amist suffering by blogging, she was always taking pictures w/ her little camera or cellphone, and also joking nonstop, bringing a lot of laughter to the crew, Hsinju said w/ a smile that Liu Taochiu is everybody's happy fruit. And Liu Tao described herself and Hsinju as a pair "sisters who went through difficulties together." She recorded their shoot through writing and photos.
