    Default Lan Yu

Has anyone read the e-book (Beijing Story) this movie is based on? I want to ask a question regarding the story line in the movie I'm not clear of.

Did Lan Yu date anyone during the time Handong is married to Jingping?

When they met again after Handong's divorce, Handong asked him "You have friend?" and Lan Yu said "Yes" and mentioned his friend has gone to US to study. What is the meaning of 'friend' in this context? It can't be just a common friend. Anyone will have some friends no matter how much a loner he/she is. It's weird for Handong to ask such a question if he only meant a common friend.

Can anyone recommend me an online store I can purchase this DVD, with not too high shipping cost? I can't find the movie in the local movie/music store (I live in M'sia). The one I currently watch is the 3-movies-in-1-disk type DVD where there is no alternate language option. I want to watch the movie in it's original language where I can hear the actor's voice. The dubbed cantonese voice is a bit lacking in emotion.

Guess I'll be talking to myself most of the time.

I wonder why Stanley Kwan use mirror image to show the sleeping Handong in the beginning. What is the director trying to convey?

Found an English translation of the novel (so much porn in it, but a touching story nonetheless).

Got my answer. Lan Yu did date someone else while he was separated from Handong.

Just finish reading the english translation. Very touching. People who will not be freaked-out by sex scenes between two guys (or heretosexual sex, since 1 of the guys is bi) should give this novel a try.

The movie is also a very good movie and able to touch my heart. I love the Lan Yu character. I like how the movie is made. Very simplistic and understated. A bit like a series of photographs put out in chronological order to tell a story and the time interval between photographs can be from a few months to a few years. But the movie is too short. Left me thirsting for more. I dunno whether adding more details to the storyline will make the movie better or not. If it become too complicated, the feel might not be the same anymore. This movie is very sparse. Dialogues are few and set is simple, but all scenes and dialogues count for something. What u watch is the interacting and chemistry between the leads.

The novel, on the other hand, has more details and the reaction and action of the characters are more clearly explained. Also, the movie just focus on the love of the couple, but the novel also makes social commentaries on the society attitudes toward the homosexuals (which give this couple so much trouble) and a bit on the Tiananmen massacre.

In the movie, when Handong and Lan Yu declared their love for each other, they use the word 喜欢 instead of 爱. Do mandarin speakers or china people usually use 喜欢 to mean love and seldom use 爱?

喜欢 is like, 爱 is love. People will usually say they 喜欢 whatever or whoever unless they're really dead serious; for instance, if someone has a crush on a person, they'll say they 喜欢 that person. 爱 is still used, but sometimes it's not neccessary; 喜欢 is usually enough. (Example, at the end of Meteor Garden 1, Shan Cai says "I 喜欢 you" to Dao Ming Si. Not "I 爱 you." But it's enough.)

Thanks kidd! Have seen it but haven't read it yet.

Unfortunately I haven't watched the movie. Not sure if they even brought it into Singapore but even if they did, I was not yet 21 the time it was released to be able to watch (R) rated movies such as this one.

Am looking out for the DVD now.

喜欢 is more of a traditional word to symbolise romantic love, 爱 is more of a modern version, but Mandarin mainly uses 喜欢. Same with Cantonese people saying 鐘意 instead of 爱.

I read a lot of reviews and search for a lot of info on Lan Yu after watching the movie. I found out that there are a least 3 scenes missing from my copy of Lan Yu. They are

    1) Handong washing Lan Yu's hair during a bathing scene.
    2) Lan Yu sitting on a balcany of a building.
    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://www.spcnet.tv/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3225&stc=1')
    3) Handong standing in front of a building with a name plate '男生公寓'. (this picture is actually on the back cover of my copy of Lan Yu, but it's not in the movie itself!!! ).

If anyone has these 3 scenes in your copy of Lan Yu, can u tell me which version you buy? From which distributor? Mine is from Universe Laser(HK).

Can you also describe what are these scenes about? In which part of the movie these scenes appear and the story behind them?

Is there any other missing scenes?

Anyone know where I can download the uncut version of Lan Yu? I know there is one out there. I know that version contains some extra scenes of Handong with his wife. That version might have the 3 missing scenes I mention above.

    Li Shuang - Weidong

    Synopsis:
Beijing, 1988. On the cusp of middle-age, Chen Handong has known little but success all his life. The eldest son of a senior government bureaucrat, he heads a fast-growing trading company and plays as hard as he works. His loyal lieutenant Liu Zheng is one of the few who know that Handong's taste run to boys more than girls.

Lan Yu is a country boy, newly arrived in Beijing to study architecture. More than most students, he is short of money and willing to try anything to earn some. He has run into Liu Zheng, who pragmatically suggests that he could prostitute himself for one night to a gay pool-hall and bar owner. But Handong happens to be in the pool-hall that evening, and he nixes the deal. He takes Lan Yu home himself, and gives the young man what turns out to be life-changing sexual initiation.

Handong and Lan Yu meet often, and the boy is soon very secure in his love for the man. But Handong insists that he wants a play-mate, not a lifelong companion, and warns Lan Yu that they will eventually break up. "When people get to know each other too well," he says, "inevitably they part." Meanwhile he showers expensive gifts to Lan Yu, expecting to deflect the boy's love by turning it into gratitude or dependency. Lan Yu is undeterred until the night he arrives at Handong's apartment and finds his lover in the process of seducing a college athlete.

They meet again on the night of 4 June 1989. Handong goes looking for Lan Yu, worried that he might have been caught up in the army's murderous sweep through Tiananmen Square. Handong gives Lan Yu his most lavish gifts yet ¨C a newly built villa on the outskirts of Beijing and a car -- and they begin living together as a couple. But again Handong shies away from his feelings for the boy. He enters a whirlwind romance with Jingping, a professional translator who has helped his company in trade negotiations with Russians, and marries her. Lan Yu moves out of the villa, and Handong loses contact with him.

Before long, Handong is divorced. He runs into Lan Yu by chance at the airport one day, and an invitation to try Lan Yu's home cooking leads to a resumption of their relationship. Now, at last, Handong learns to feel and show commitment to his lover -- just when his company comes under investigation for smuggling and illegal fund-raising. Handong is facing long-term imprisonment, possible worse, but to the delight of his sister Yonghong and her husband Daning (not to mention Liu Zheng and his other employees) he is bailed out by Lan Yu. The boy sells the villa and the car, and pools the proceeds with his own savings -- yielding enough to get Handong out of trouble. Finally, Handong and Lan Yu can be together.

But fate can play cruel tricks...

Yeah. I saw that already. Well, I've finally managed to find a supposely complete version of the movie. It has scene 3, but still no scene 1 and 2. Dunno where those come from.

Apart from the bathing scene and the singing scene, there were also more scenes on Handong and his wife. The full versionshowed the reason why Handong and his wife finally divorce. His wife has become very materialistic after they married. But the scenes still showed they maintained a good relationship. But later, we were shown a scene where Handong was very happy to know that his wife his pregnant. His wife told him she aborted the baby already. That was what finally broke the marriage. But in the last moment of that scene, his wife asked "I believe you did love me at the beginning, right?" So, it showed that the marriage brokeup was not totally his wife's fault but his wife can sense his heart was not with her. I think that caused her to focus her heart on money instead.

Anway, after watching the full version, I felt that the cut version was better. The cut version more consistant in the feel department. Like throughout the film, we were just shown scenes with little details. We just guess the rest from the conversations. The added scenes feel like too much information, and does match with the overall feel of the movie.

But I'm still glad I watch full version because I get to know why Handong's divorce with his wife.

Glad you also love Lan Yu. It's a great movie.

I'm glad to meet you, too, a "Lan Yu lover" . Lan Yu is an old film, so people don't want to talk about it anymore ( . I believe that when it was started to show, many audiences love it. Liu Ye have many fan clubs in foreign countries, where Lan Yu went though. Do you like Liu Ye? I like him before I watch Lan Yu, and after that I decide Lan Yu is my favourite film.

I like this scene above, because I've heard Lan Yu'eyes in this scene is the most beautiful eyes of Liu Ye. What a pity, I can't see it clearly, because of the internet hik hik.

My English is not very good, so if I have mistakes, just ignore it, OK )

You can say I kinda like Liu Ye before watching Lan Yu. The first time I watch Liu Ye is in The Promise as Show Wolf. I like him in the movie. Then I got to know that he also acted in Lan Yu and the movie gets very good reviews in amazon.com (full stars). So, I search everywhere for it. Finally found it in a 3-in-1 DVD compilation. But that was the cut version in cantonese. Later ordered another DVD from yesasia thinking it will be the uncut version. But still end up with the cut version, but this time got to hear Liu Ye's and Hu Jun's original voice.

I become his fan after watching Lan Yu.

Btw, I also like Hu Jun before I saw Lan Yu. I saw him in Demi God Semi Devil tv series first.

Have bought Li Ye's Purple Butterfly, but haven't watch it yet.

Have your Beijing Story (the story this movie is based on)?

I like Liu Ye through the Chinese series Tian he ju, he acted with Sun Li. Don't know why I like him, because in this film he's not handsome, older and more solemn than Lan Yu. May be his face is impressive and strange. Then I looked for all his films, but these are not available in shops. I watched The Promise, it's not a good film, but still hear praises for Liu Ye, the only character.

I've read Beijing Story already, a story translated into my language. The translator pruned all the scenes xxx, but still enough to understand the major content and the soul of the story. I haven't got the power to read these xxx scenes, it's too obvious and probably I will have certain obsessions. I'm afraid of that.

I like Lan Yu but may be not much because of the content. The thing makes me like it, is the kind of human that the author built. A gentle, strong and faithful Lan Yu, I admire him so much. He lived and sacrificed too much for Handong. It's hard to believe.

About Hu Jun, I think you've watch Tian long ba bu already??? A chinese series, so excellent. He's too talent, always flash and shoulder the weight of the film. Ah, in Tian long ba bu, he looks handsome, do you think so?
