That's a good question. Wuxia fandom certainly won't be extinct, if this forum and many others like it are any measure, but it has been noted that there are indeed no stalwart wuxia writers that even remotely approach the caliber of Jin Yong or Gu Long right now. That is not to say that a talented wuxia writer will not emerge in the future, but this writer certainly has not emerged yet.

Somebody in this forum posted before that Liang Yu Sheng's novels have tight connections with each other. You may not understand the novel fully if you have not read all of the other novels? Is that true?

Very good question... I really hope that WU Xia won't be extinct after JY and GL's genre. I would so sad if that happened... I love Wu Xia and it is a part of my life.... I just can't bear to ever let it get extinct...

Yes that is true. I've read quite a few of Liang Yu Sheng's novels. They are well worth reading but they lack the passion of Gu Long novels and the sentimental value of Jin Yong's books. However, the connections between novels certainly allows us to read about generations of characters which link with each other. So certain characters are often mentioned in more than one book. Which is good especially you've come to like him/her and you can also discover how their children have development and how they martial arts skills have passed on etc etc. You don't actually need to read the previous novels of a series to understand what's going on but it certainly helps a lot. Unfortunately I've yet to come across a place where it explains the order of his books and how each books connects. So I've had to discover thisyself.

By the way. I don't think wu xia will ever be extinct (not in our lifetime anyway). With the continual remaking of the china series on books from JY and GL and also new generations of fans like us, more likely it'll grow even more. But it is disappointing no modern day author has stepped up to mark and emulate JY and GL's greatness. Though I've heard "Huang Yi" is a very good author, is he old like JY and GL. Haven't read any of his books, have trouble acquiring them.

Good point skywise... But I have noticed that most of the younger generation don't really care for the actual "Wu Xia" element of it. I have noticed that a number of the remakes are really bad(for example CKH 2001, DOMD 2000) and really disgrace the actual story. Most of the fans ONLY watch it for the artists/cast that they like and don't even know how to appreciate JY, GL or Wu Xia itself. I think that is kind of sad.... Many of the new generation fans of series even said that they don't care about the actual novels as long as the cast that they like are in a series..... sigh.... I sure hope there will be more true wu xia fans in the later generations.

I hope that WU Xia won't be extinct... I will be really upset if that ever happens. Speaking of adaptions, a number of adaptions lately don't show any respect to the original author at all. Like for example, CLH 2001 and DOMD 2000 and the new upcoming remake of JDSJ(the one where they turn Jiang Yu Lan into a girl). Many of the fans are just watching it for the cast and don't even care for the story or novel....
