Joe Ma wins over co-star Anita Yuen

By spcnet.tv on February 26th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

For years he’s been the lightning rod of media criticism due to the numerous links with his female co-stars. But these days, Joe Ma’s hitherto tainted image has been scrubbed clean, and he’s even gotten the seal of approval from the allegedly difficult Anita Yuen, his co-star in the drama Born Rich.

“I read that she’s a very difficult person, but in fact she’s very meticulous and cheerful. Our chemistry is very good and we seldom had NGs (no-good takes). Because of that we often wrapped up early!” chirped the Hong Kong actor.

Joe was in Singapore on Tuesday to promote the new serial, which features an ensemble cast including Gallen Lo, Ray Lui, Kenix Kwok and Nancy Sit. In it, he plays an all-too-perfect good guy, a bank executive whose romantic interest is Anita.

Previous reports showed that Joe’s good feelings are two-way. Anita commented that despite…

Mindee Ong becomes charity ambassador for the elderly

By spcnet.tv on February 26th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

While most celebrities’ acts of charity usually involve adopting foreign babies or posing starkers for anti-fur and vegetarian movements, Mindee Ong’s humanitarian move is refreshing real.

The actress, best known for her role in Royston Tan’s colourful getai movies 881 and 12 Lotus, is now a charity ambassador for the elderly destitute. Her first task? Spreading love and warmth of Chinese New Year with about 600 old folks at a luncheon at Jurong Safra.

“These elderly are the pioneers of Singapore, yet they are now being neglected by society. I’m really happy to contribute. One day when I grow old, I don’t know where I will be staying, whether alone, or with my children or at a home,” she says emphatically.

She didn’t perform on stage for the elderly audience during the luncheon. Instead, the lass practiced what she preached and chose to “walk around and talk to…

Nothing awkward as Charmaine Sheh chatted with Moses Chan

By spcnet.tv on February 26th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

There weren’t any signs of awkward moments as co-stars Charmaine Sheh and Moses Chan chatted while filming their new drama Can’t Buy Me Love (previously titled The Arrival of Princess).

The rumoured love triangle between Charmaine, Moses and his alleged girlfriend Bernice Liu has persistently been the centre of the attention from the Hong Kong media. In a rare moment of losing her usual ice-queen cool, Charmaine had, in a previous interview, abruptly left midway when asked about her relationship with Moses.

Since their third consecutive collaboration after starring together in Beyond the Realm of Conscience and Heaven and Earth, the pair was speculated to have started dating each other after Moses, 39, allegedly broke up with Bernice.

Charmaine, 34, was livid with anger at the magazine’s wayward reports and threatened to sue the publication.

When asked, Bernice, 31, nonchalantly stated, “I have not seen Charmaine and I…

Ariel Lin’s smile confirms dating rumours

By spcnet.tv on February 26th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

All it took was a glowing smile on Ariel Lin’s face that confirmed media speculation about her love life.

Although the Taiwanese actress tried her best to evade queries about it, she eventually beamed and admitted to being newly in love.

The actress was a guest at the launch of actor and label-mate Figaro Ceng’s new book on Tuesday, but the press was more interested in quizzing the starlet on recent photos of her on a date with an unidentified man.

The actress repeatedly attempted to deflect the questions, while Figaro was powerless in trying to help his friend out, interjecting with “She’s always had many good friends!”. Eventually she relented, “I will work hard and hope that everything will turn out well.” She said that relationships would be one of the things she hopes to nurture this year.

Ariel was recently voted third by girls in a…

Fann Wong called her Valentine’s Day "tragic"

By spcnet.tv on February 25th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

This year’s overlap of Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day won’t occur again until 2048 (the last time the coincidence happened was 1953), so Fann Wong can rest assured the two days shall be apart for a while.

With the biggest day in the Chinese calendar clashing with the most romantic day for lovers, some folks like Fann and her hubby Christopher Lee had to sacrifice one occasion for the other. In the end, the couple, who have been married for less than a year, decided to forego the roses, much to the actress’ dismay.

At the press conference for her new movie Happy Go Lucky, Fann complained that there was no celebration or even a gift from her husband, and described her Valentine’s Day this year as “tragic.”

Due to the death of Christopher’s father in February last year, the couple did not distribute red packets this…

Tony Leung’s surgery disrupts filming for The Grand Master

By spcnet.tv on February 25th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

It is a series of unfortunate events for renowned film director Wong Kar-wai’s upcoming martial arts flick, The Grand Master. Filming continued to be delayed for the umpteenth time due to a previous injury sustained by actor Tony Leung.

The Hong Kong star broke his left arm in July last year while training with a Wing Chun master. He was ordered to take a break for six months, but only recently discovered that his broken bones were not healing properly. To rectify the problem, the 48-year-old will undergo corrective surgery to realign the bones.

Production for The Grand Master finally began last year after Leung trained for seven years under Wing Chun expert Ip Man’s son, Ip Chun, and other martial arts instructors.

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi’s screen time in the film will also be greatly reduced. The 31-year-old was recently embroiled in a donation fund scandal for…

Mark Chao and Janine Chang’s romance cools off

By spcnet.tv on February 25th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

Distance and busy schedules seemed to cool off the alleged romance between Mark Chao and Janine Cheng. The two Taiwanese actors were rumoured to be dating after they starred together in the hit police-and-thief drama series Black & White.

The couple reportedly kept their relationship under the radar due to their opposing management companies. Although they adamantly dismissed rumours of a relationship, Mark often talked about his onscreen partner. In more than one interview, the 26-year-old Golden Bell Best Actor winner confessed to “admiring Janine Chang” and straightforwardly said “which guy would not like Janine Chang.”

Janine, 28, spent the last three months filming a drama series in China and only returned to Taiwan twice due to advertorial commitments, staying only for a day on both occasions before returning to China.

Mark went back to native Canada on a one-month and is now is tied up with movie…

Jay Chou offended by beer ad

By spcnet.tv on February 25th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

Taiwanese megastar Jay Chou is planning to sue the Taiwanese movie distributor of True Legend over the alleged misuse of his picture in a beer commercial. Jay made a guest appearance in the martial arts action flick directed by Yuen Woo-ping.

Produced by Hong Kong’s Edko Films, the film rights are held exclusively by Serenity Entertainment International in Taiwan.

JVR, Jay’s management company, stated through its spokesperson Zhang Lanyun, “We told them long ago we do not approve of such a use. The contract states that our permission has to be sought for anyone to use the picture.”

Responding to queries, Serenity’s marketing manager Jia Shiqiang said, “After Jay Chou expressed his concerns, we cut his scenes from the commercial. But the movie poster at the end of the commercial is a promotional material, we have the right to use it.”

The TV commercial for Tsingtao Beer did…

"Weekends are very precious": newlyweds Mr & Mrs Ang Junyang

By spcnet.tv on February 24th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

Even marriage cynics could be won over by the looks on Ang Junyang and Candyce Toh returning fresh and rejuvenated from their honeymoon on Bali Island. The pair recently tied the knot in January after a three-year long courtship at a glitzy star-studded affair at Raffles Marina Country Club.

The shift to their legal status as husband and wife didn’t feel any different for this couple although they unanimously agreed that “living together is a new experience in life and one that we enjoy very much.”

“It’s a step upwards and a step forward,” Junyang aptly surmised.

It’s just after lunchtime for this lovey-dovey pair who had to squeeze time out of their busy schedules to grab a quick-bite and spend some solo time together since they don’t share regular 9-to-5 working hours as most couples do.

In this case, things are a little trickier with Candyce’s “long…
