Rumoured couple Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong speaks up

By spcnet.tv on March 30th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

For a whole two years, the rumour mill has meticulously spun claims of links between local actors Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong. The speculation is that Felicia was won over by Yao Dong’s caring ways.

The photogenic pair made their couple debut in the 2007/2008 Ch 8 mega-drama series, Love Blossoms, and since won over the likes of viewers at home.

The duo however has been adamant with a resolute “we’re only just friends” stand. But as garnered wisdom or just a whole load of skepticism will tell you, while a boy and a girl can be friends, there is no such thing as just friends.

For the first time, the pair agreed to an interview together during filming for the ongoing Ch 8 cooking variety programme, Three Plus One. On set, the pair displayed not just their culinary skills but a tacit understanding of one another.

Yao Dong could not stop praising his female compatriot to the skies. “She even sent me a text message and told me that she knows what she would like to cook [for this show]. She said that she had two dishes!

“Her strong points are the many changes she made since she first joined showbiz. Despite going through many trials, her sincerity has not changed. She is very sincere towards people and is very serious about her career. Felicia has a heart of gold.”

He then turned around to face Felicia and encouragingly said, “This is really good. Keep it up!” His random outburst was met with an abashed look from the lady herself.

The menu, he added, was “wholly decided by Felicia” and he complimented it as being “inventive” with “many different creative ideas.” Apparently, Felicia specially sought help and cooking tips from her maternal grandmother in order to prep for the show.

“When we first collaborated together, the impression she gave me was like a deer caught in the headlights. After one year of trials and tribulations, she has become more matured. She might have been training herself in secret,” he continued.

The jovial showers of praise ended hastily, though, once their alleged romance was put to question. “The both of us seldom meet up,” he clarified. “The relationship between the both of us can only be described to be ‘jun zi zhi jiao dan ru shui’ (meaning a normal friendship in Chinese).”

Felicia, on the other hand, was far more coy with her answers. She declined to comment on Yao Dong’s positive traits and instead, directed the questions back to viewers, “That is for you guys to slowly understand [him] and discover.”

However, she was quick to throw in a failsafe compliment of Yao Dong saying “At least his culinary skills are pretty good!”

Catch Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong on Ch 8′s Three Plus One and watch them cook up a storm on May 12 at 8pm!

JJ Lin moved to tears at surprise birthday party at *SCAPE

By spcnet.tv on March 30th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

Taiwan-based local singer JJ Lin was moved to tears when his fans and record company threw him a surprise birthday celebration at *SCAPE last Sunday where he performed a showcase, a day after he turned 29.

Around 1000 fans turned up for JJ Party 4, which also featured a video of his fellow colleagues at music label Ocean Butterflies singing their own version of his new song ‘Turn’ in a video. The singer, visibly moved, quipped, “I’m really lost for words now!”

His fanclub then presented him with a Darth Vader jacket from his favourite movie series Star Wars. He admitted he had been looking for this specific jacket for a long time now.

“I want to wear it now!” he gushed like a kid at Christmas.

His best bud Hong Junyang also made a surprise appearance, equalizing the earlier event where JJ had surprised his friend at his wedding in January after initially claiming he couldn’t turn up.

The two then performed songs ‘Go!’ and the Richard Marx classic ‘Now and Forever’.

With his former schoolmate Junyang all settled down with wife Candyce Toh, JJ seems to be feeling the itch as well.

“After all I’m already 29, if there’s still no one it would be rather weird,” said JJ, who added that although there’s nothing going on in the love department at the moment, he wouldn’t stay out of Cupid’s way.

As for this birthday boy’s wish, his answer hinted he might have forgiven but not forgotten the bitter episode of the past year.

He was kept in the dark when his longtime music collaborators left him last year, which he had then called “a betrayal”.

“Hope my friends treat me better!” he quipped.

Ronald Cheng and Charlene Choi to divorce; possible third party involved

By spcnet.tv on March 30th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

Now that Ronald Cheng and Charlene Choi have officially announced their divorce after four years of marriage, rumours are flying that Charlene is leaving her soon-to-be ex-husband for a wealthy Chinese man. Both parties have denied that a third party is involved in the dissolution of their marriage.

What is confirmed is that the two Hong Kong stars, who started dating in 2004 after starring as lovers in the movie Hidden Heroes, had secretly wedded in Jan 2006 in Los Angeles.

They held a teary-eyed press conference last Saturday and gave the shocking news that they were not simply breaking up but legally separating.

Singer-actor Ronald broke down during the seven-minute media event as he talked about how they fell in love, got married, but are now splitting due to differences. They both added that it is amicable and hope to continue being friends.

Sources said Charlene, one half of pop group Twins, was the one who strayed. The man in question is the son of a Shanghai tycoon and is about 30 years of age.

Appearing for Twins the following day in Mongkok, the 27-year-old revealed, sounding almost scorned, that she has an idea who ratted on the marriage secret.

Asked about the divorce plans, she reiterated that their fortunes would not be split.

On the same day, Ronald was in Chengdu for an awards ceremony but the 38-year-old refused to speak to reporters.

Beauty queen late for her own radio show

By spcnet.tv on March 30th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

“What’s the meaning of i-d-i-o-s-y-n-c-r-a-s-y? I think the person who coined this word is crazy…” came the unprompted reply before she drifted further into a rambling speech. And that, everyone, was Ris Low’s maiden voyage hitting the airwaves as a newly-minted 987FM radio DJ on The Shan, Rozz [& Ris] Show.

Fortunately, the bewilderment was nipped in the bud by a swift response from co-host, Shan Wee who stepped in with the denotative meaning [of idiosyncrasy] before turning to his new radio partner to ask if she has any strange habits to tell.

“Yes I do. I shave my armpits every morning, otherwise it will overgrow,” Ris offered matter-of-factly over an interview with xinmsn during her radio show.

This, is a beauty queen fallen from grace, besieged by controversies and her bad ‘ingrish-speaking’ fashion yet she remains oblivious to the stream of stinging criticism; and instead of scrambling for a shovel and digging a hole to bury herself, it seems she is quietly determining her next move – like, ink a radio DJ contract on a primetime show. It certainly looks like all the bad publicity has done its part to muddy up her resume.

News of the ex-beauty queen’s co-hosting gig on 987FM broke last week and the station’s shocking decision has since drawn flak from several netizens and radio listeners, who feel it is a publicity stunt that, if not managed well, could go terribly wrong.

Posted on MediaCorp’s message board, forum user ‘jeat17141′ wrote: “Gawd no no no no no no no. Poor Shan and Rozz; not going to tune in to them as often now. Thank you for ruining one of my favourite radio shows by turning it into a complete joke.”

When asked to comment on the rationale behind its decision, 987FM Senior Creative Director, Georgina Chang said: “Ris has proven that whatever she does, she gets people talking so she really draws a lot of attention and curiosity and [having her], it is just to spice up the evening drive [show].”

Georgina also revealed that the team was appalled at her decision to sign on the controversial ex-beauty queen and despite a slew of negative feedback from the public, she thinks otherwise: “She’s not hired for her radio talent but she has a certain reputation and she brings something else to the show. She’s not hired for her diction and people are always curious about the things she says so I think it’ll be highly entertaining.”

When asked about how she would help “to spice up the evening show”, Ris replied: “I’m funny, witty and I’m real. I think people want to hear real stuff.”

Echoing Ris’s stance is Shan, who was extremely sweet toward his rookie partner, and even provided Ris an on-the-spot diction coaching peppered with encouragement. He said: “Rozz and I have been doing a radio co-host show for about three years now [and] that’s quite a long time so I’m quite happy to have a change and it’s just fun.”

“Personally, I think that personality is the most important thing when it comes to the different factors that make up a DJ so Ris’s personality is her main asset.”

In contrast to the easygoing nature of her regular partner, Rozz appeared a little awkward, at times, certain moments during the show when Ris candidly declared: “I’m settling down pretty well but Rozz seems to be unhappy with me”.

Admittedly, Rozz shared her initial hesitation about her new co-host but assured us that she is “ok now”. She said: “Ris is very new. Of course she brings a different dimension to radio and obviously we are banking on her popularity but chemistry-wise, I think we’ll need a little more time [because] Shan and I actually took a year and a half to get to a comfortable stage where we are now. So yes, I’m a bit apprehensive, to be honest.”

To which, the excited rookie partner quipped: “We’ll make this work Rozz, don’t worry.”

If Ris was feeling stress or nervous, she hid it well for she was a picture of calmness despite hosting a ‘live’ radio show for the first time with zilch experience. When we asked Ris on her thoughts and emotions on her first day on the job, she replied coolly: “It’s good for me and it’s feels like home.”

Well, don’t write her off just yet. Take it with a bag of salt, if you must but we hope Ris knocks the socks off her listeners and you may discover yet more reasons or even more of her idiosyncrasies, to love – or hate – the controversial media darling.

She was, after all, named CNNGo’s 25 most influential people in Asia (2009) and that, to us, is totally boomz, you know.

Nicholas Tse’s son Lucas may be a genius

By spcnet.tv on March 30th, 2010 | Chinese Entertainment, newsfeed

As if they weren’t already the envy of many, now Hong Kong celebrity couple Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung has made us regular folks, or at least, those of whom are parents, feel like kicking ourselves again.

Their first child, Lucas, who since his birth has been referred to as a ‘prime-grade baby’ thanks to his famous, photogenic parents, is now rumoured to be a genius with an IQ above 130.

While his mother and father have had their share of bad press-they were mired in the Edison Chen online sex photos scandals in 2008 soon after tying the knot in secret-Lucas has been making the news for all the right reasons.

The paparazzi relishes the fact the two-year-old tyke isn’t camera-shy, and his inherited good looks and glamourous family background has made him a hit with advertisers. He was even speculated to have been offered HK$10 million (S$1.8 million) to front a milk powder commercial.

Believed to have been tutored since he was one and kept on a special-and costly-diet, , Lucas, now precisely two years and eight months old, is able to address all his relatives and pronounce English words.

The prodigy pattern isn’t something that runs in the family. Dad Nicholas was a school dropout while Mom Celicia did not attend high school.

Since the start of this year, their son has been attending a renowned international school where the fees amount to HK$67,000 (S$12,000) annually. Rumour has it that his full potential is showing up in spades, and he recently scored more than 130 on an IQ test.

Nicholas and Cecilia are expecting their second son in May. Only time will tell if another prodigy is arriving.
