Five-year-old children are usually camera-shy and quiet when facing strangers.
Not this five-year-old from Taiwan.
Popular child-star Wen Xuan Hua (popularly known as Xiao Xiao Bin) got reporters laughing and gushing at his cuteness when interviewed.
Xiao Xiao Bin was at an old folks’ home with his father and younger brother (dubbed by Taiwanese media as ‘Mini Bin’) where they were interviewed for the Xiao Bing Concert happening on Aug 8.
When he saw reporters, the media-savvy kid immediately greeted everyone, saying, “I wish everyone good health and happiness every day”.
Xiao Xiao Bin’s father, Wen Zhao Yu, used to be a popular child-star back in the 80s and goes by the moniker ‘Xiao Bin Bin’.
Xiao Xiao Bin’s resemblance to his father’s younger self was so uncanny that Xiao Xiao Bin was given his current screen name, which represents the ‘smaller’ version of his father.
Xiao Xiao Bin’s mother left them after a divorce three years ago. However, according to Zhao Yu, they’ve since patched up when she returned home last month.
When asked about how he felt about seeing his mother again, Xiao Xiao Bin said that he was “very happy”.
Zhao Yu explained that there is no longer any misunderstanding or enmity between them and they are like friends now. He also explains the reason for her disappearance.
“It has been hard on her for the past few years and she didn’t want to rely on our son to make a living so she chose to stay away and work by herself for the past few years.”
He revealed that right now, their priority is to save up for the children’s education and he hopes that the family can keep in contact as the children need their parents.
Just when the adults are talking about money and saving for his education, Xiao Xiao Bin suddenly said, “I’m very rich already, I have 3,000 (S$150)!” causing everyone to burst out in laughter.
His father then explained that 3000 is the largest amount that Xiao Xiao Bin knows, which he probably learned from watching cartoons.
Xiao Xiao Bin recently started school in kindergarten but just three days later, he took a seven-day leave to come to Singapore.
To that, Zhao Yu explained that the long break was due to Xiao Xiao Bin falling sick before coming over to Singapore.
“I sent him to kindergarten to get an experience. Unfortunately, he caught the flu three days into it so he didn’t go back to school; the teacher also wanted him to rest at home lest he passes on the germs to his classmates.”
Xiao Xiao Bin obviously liked the arrangement; despite the sneezing and coughing, he said that he still prefers work over school.
The trio is a tight-knitted family and Zhao Yu raises the example of how he gets Xiao Xiao Bin’s tear ducts to start working when filming to demonstrate this.
“I would tell him, if he doesn’t cry, we’ll have to sell his brother away and the director will be so angry that I would be chased away. Then he’ll start to cry.”
During the interview, Xiao Xiao Bin’s exchanges with his father also show how close they are.
When reporters asked Xiao Xiao Bin if he wants to be an actor or singer, Zhao Yu whispered into Xiao Xiao Bin’s ear saying, “Act in a movie; I didn’t win a Golden Horse award so you must help me win one.”
Xiao Xiao Bin responded to that with a groan and laughed.
Xiao Xiao Bin also said that he is not afraid of memorizing scripts when acting.
“I can memorize them the first time he reads it to me.”
Zhao Yu then butted in, saying that Xiao Xiao Bin remembers fast and forgets fast, which Xiao Xiao Bin repeats and laughs to himself, clearly enjoying the exchange.
Zhao Yu revealed that other than the performance, he will also be bringing his two sons to visit Universal Studios and the Night Safari before going back to Taiwan.
