YOG singers open up on forgotten lyrics and the elf prince Legolas

It helped that we are comfortable tucked away from the mid-day sun — nestled on plushy velvet couches at Fairmont Hotel’s Ink Club Bar — with a cool gush of air blowing over our faces from time to time.

As the vivacious quartet giggled and fumbled – in unison – over our opening tagline, we find it hard to believe that they barely spent a week’s worth of time together — from the recording of the theme song, to the filming of the music video — from the camaraderie they share with each other.

Opening up on tiny bloopers like forgotten lyrics and idolizing the elfin Legolas from The Lord of The Rings, we reveled in the quartet’s continued friendship as they punctuated the interview with a lethal concoction of hearty laughter after every spoken sentence.

Penned by local music producer and Singapore Idol judge, Ken Lim, and titled ‘Everyone’, the four boisterous singers including Sean Kingston, America’s representative (he was absent at the interview), filmed the YOG music video at various iconic locations in Singapore from the Esplanade to the Marina Barrage.

Though there “weren’t any awkward happenings” during the shoot, Surrey-born musician Steve, who is also Europe’s representative, confessed that he did commit a couple of blunders which evoked non-stop laughter from his fellow African rep, Jody.

The multi-instrumentalist, who is also the most vocal member, explained that he “kept forgetting my lyrics”, and tickled his fellow peers’ funny bone when he continued to mouth and reenact the scenario for the cameras.

Aside from bloopers like forgotten lyrics during the music video shoot, all else went fine at their full-dress rehearsals, which took place earlier this week on Wednesday. Despite their tender ages (Steve, Jessica, and Sean are all 20, Jody’s 19, and Tabitha’s the youngest at 18), their jittery nerves were the least of their concerns.

Enchanted by the “huge”, “amazing” and “overwhelming opening ceremony”, the girls can’t wait to see how the actual day pans out, as Steve chimed in, “You know what? Actually, I wasn’t really nervous at all. I’ve been nervous before but there’s just something about the whole atmosphere. Maybe it was just the rehearsal and not the actual day.”

“Can you imagine everyone else watching it on TV?” Jessica gushed, as they talked about performing before a stadium of 26,000 people.

We know they can hold a tune well and mesmerize with their enchanting voices, but if these four aspiring young singers were blessed with sporting genes, what is the one sport they’ll choose to be adept in?

While Jessica and Jody chose “basketball” and Steve picked table tennis, or “ping pong” as he calls it, Eurasian beauty Tabitha opted for “archery” instead.

“I’m a huge fan of The Lord of The Rings after watching the show and my favourite character was Legolas (played by Orlando Blooms). Watching him shoot the arrows and stuff, made me go ‘I wanna do that!’,” she raved animatedly.
