Jackie Chan says “Sorry”.
“If I have caused any misunderstanding or discontent because of my incomplete thoughts and feelings posted on Twitter, I would like to express my deepest and most sincere apology,” wrote Chan.
The martial arts superstar had recently been lambasted by Hong Kong netizens when he tried to defend the Manila police for their alleged mishandling of the hostage crisis.
The 56-year-old had written on Twitter, “Hong Kong is a country with a diverse society and don’t worry, we (Hong Kong citizens) do not hate,” drawing flak from netizens that he had no right to speak on behalf of Hong Kong citizens.
In response, Jackie explained, “The content in my Twitter account was posted by my American assistant on my behalf, but after interpretation the posts did not entirely capture what I truly meant to say.
He went on to clarify that he had meant to convey that he would not hate Filipino people as a result of the tragic incident.
“There are several hundred thousand Filipinos working in Hong Kong, and there are quite a few Hong Kong people working in the Philippines as well. If we start hating each other, it will cause great damage to both Hong Kong and the Philippines.”
The star of Hollywood film Rush Hour concluded that he felt grief and pain for the Hong Kong victims of the unfortunate incident, and would leave it to the experts on “who should be held responsible for the incident.”
