TVB top executives arrested for alleged corruption

By spcnet.tv on March 14th, 2010 | Hong Kong Entertainment, TVB

We’ve seen it often enough in TVB’s dramas where the lives of professionals working against corruption and fraud in Hong Kong’s ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption) are dramatized. The irony is that TVB’s General Manager, Stephen Chan Chi-Wan, has been asked to “drink coffee” with the ICAC for alleged corruption for some cool HK$10 million. Four other top executives were also arrested for questioning.

The investigation is going on whether a shell company that Stephan Chan controlled has pocketed significant money from outsourcing production contracts to other production companies from TVB. It was also speculated that many of TVB’s artistes were forced to perform for very low costs while the shell company pocketed the difference.

TVB 42nd Anniversary Awards 2009

By spcnet.tv on December 15th, 2009 | Hong Kong Entertainment, TVB

The TVB report cards were passed out recently on December 4th 2009 to celebrate the best of TVB’s actors and productions. “Rosy Business” (巾帼枭雄) was the hot drama this year, picking up awards for Best Male Actor, Favorite Male Actor, TVB.com Popular Artist (all 3 won by Wayne Lai), Best Female Actress (Sheren Tang), Most Improved Actor (Pierre Ngo), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Susan Tse), and Best Drama. These are long-awaited recognitions for veteran actors Wayne Lai and Sheren Tang. There were rumors that if Sheren didn’t win this year – after her disputed loss to Gigi Lai in 2004 for her role in War and Beauty – her fans would protest outside of TVB.

Tavia Yeung was also a big winner this year, she won the the Favorite Female Actress and Best Performance of the Year awards for her role as the villainess Yiu Kam Ling (姚金鈴) in “Beyond the Realm of Conscience” (宮心計). The Best Performance award is supposedly judged unbiasedly by industry critics for technical points in an actor or actress’s performance.

Michael Tse also easily won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his popular role as Laughing Gor in “E.U.” (學警狙擊).

The awards list:
“Best Actor in a Leading Role” Award (最佳男主角) : Wayne Lai (Rosy Business)

“Best Actress in a Leading Role” Award (最佳女主角) : Sheren Tang (Rosy Business)

“Best Performance of the Year” Award (最佳表現大獎) : Tavia Yeung (Beyond the Realm of Conscience)

TVB Burning Flame III makes opening record in last 3 years

By spcnet.tv on July 8th, 2009 | Hong Kong Entertainment, TVB

Burning Flame III

The third installment of TVB’s firefighters drama, “Burning Flame III”, starring Wong Hei, Kevin Cheng, Bosco Wong, and Myolie Wu aired on 7/6/09 Monday and made viewership record history for a drama’s opening day in TVB’s last 3 years. It tied with the 2006 TVB drama “The Dance of Passion”. “Burning Flame III” averaged 36 points on the first day and reach 38 points since, the equivalent of over 242,000 viewers. And Myolie doesn’t even show up yet until episode 2.

Kevin Cheng seemed ecstatic over the news and when asked if he would don a swimsuit to celebrate if the drama reaches 40 points, he jokingly said it would be weird if he did it by himself and that Wong Hei and Bosco will have to do it together.

Chun Wong recovering at hospital

TVB veteran actor Chun Wong, now 60, had a brush with death on his birthday the past Saturday July 12th, 2008 when he fell overboard on a cruise back to Hong Kong from Cheung Chau Island. Chun was reportedly drunk after celebrating his birthday with friends and fell off the deck accidentally. Chun was in critical condition at one point as water had to be drained from his lungs but is now in stable condition at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Hong Kong.

Chun Wong is a long-time TVB actor and played numerous supporting characters. He’s probably best known for his role in the 1982 Jin Yong adaptation of “Legend of the Condor Heroes” as the impish Zhou Ba Tong.
