I like how this version has fast-paced plot while stay true to the novel. Fighting scenes are quite good. Athena Chu is enjoyable as Huang Rong, even though her gestures is still influenced by Barbara Yung, but much better than 2003 version of Huang Rong. Huang Rong and Guo Jing's chemistry is somewhat better than 1983 since they put important dialogue from the novel that 1983 didn't have. The only thing I didn't like is the supporting characters cast like Mu Nianci, Zhou BoTong, Huang Yao She.. most of them are not good enough compare to 1983.

Agree with "friends"! This is the best version. Julian and Athena were the perfect pair for this series, they had great chemistry.

I love this TVB series the most, esp. Julian and Athena. They made a very lovely and beautiful pair. Julian played his best at Huo Jing with the innocent love for Huang Rong. It's unfair to compair this series with those of 1983 because Julian and Athena did their best through out the stories. Athena looks very very cute as an intelligent Huang Rong, and Julian looks so naive and has true love for Huang Rong. This 1994 series rank 4.5/5.

Being the closests portrayal to the novel is one thing, having the skills to convery the character is another. If people can't recognize Barbara Yung's amazing and natural talents, you don't know what real acting is. Athena was too plain and simple as HR. I didn't sense enough intelligence from her though I'll admit she was pretty cute. Overal, Athena as well as this version is just average. Nothing spectacular but not bad.

For die-hard Jin Yong fans, this is the version to get. I always cringe when people say Barbara Yung's portrayal of Huang Rong is the best. If you've read the novel, she's no where near how the novel depicts the character's beauty (no offense to the actress); even Michelle Yim portrayed a better Huang Rong in the 70's than she did. IMO, of all the versions, Athena is the closest to what is depicted in the novel.

I think this is the best version of this story. Julian and Athena were perfect in these 2 roles and the chemistry between them were so good. The supporting characters were good too.

If this movie gets a 3.5/5, then the 1982 version would get at most .5/5. Seriously! The 2003 version would get a rating between 3 to 5 depending on whether or not you like the special effects. I've seen all three movies and own 2 of them. The one that was (and is still) painful to watch is the 1982 version. Perhaps it was great in its own days, but when compared to today's standard, the 1982 version is nothing but crappy and a waste of time. I'm out!

I must say after watching this HK series recently that drives me to chase the 1995 HK version of Return of the Condor Heroes.
I must say even though at that time there is no scientific and graphic images to help to boost the scenes, but the old series is so good. I like Chi Lam and Athena Chu as they are not only compatible but also great in acting their role.
