The Curse of the Golden Flower
The Curse of the Golden Flower 2006

Bad. I apologise for any offence, as it's obvious the amount of effort and resources put into this production. But the end result is a poor excuse for lavishness. I must have been sleeping, because I missed the whole premise of the plot. Here also is a great lesson in excess. I found myself nostalgic for the old black and whites again, and pining for the bare necessities. Costume and make-up only succeeded in making all less attractive than they are. Strong performances, especially from the two leads, fail to redeem this over-long, dismal mess. Time better spent elsewhere.

Devil's Disciples
Devil's Disciples 2007

I agree, you need to be a great fan of the actors, or really hankering for something to pass the time to consider watching this one. For me it was the latter, although curiously enough I rather enjoyed it. That may sound contradictory, but I guess if you expect nothing it's hard to be disappointed. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised; is that his name, Wayne Lai? - what a perfect role for him; Sharon Chan, another surprise. She's really very attractive, very tall. Her character is very strong also. It's so refreshing to see a dominant female character. Unfortunately Bosco seems always to be lumped with characters missing half a brain. He deserves better. And don't get me started on Kevin and his mummy sub- (SUB-) plot. But I forget, I liked the series, lol. Maybe you can forgive the ending too. 3/5

Golden Faith
Golden Faith 2002

Hmmm... don't know what it was about this series that just didn't satisfy. Dare I say the whole did not live up to its parts? So much potential: Gallen and Jessica - together; Deric Wan, Raymond, Michelle, Anne, Tavia... you just knew it was going to be a grand production with tears and heartaches galore, evil plotting, unexpected twists and turns... And it did deliver this, quite earnestly too, yet in the end it failed to leave any lasting impression. Deric was terribly mis-cast, his relationship with Jessica unconvincing, Michelle's character turned out to be superfluous, Myolie irritated, sub-plots were tired and predictable, and Gallen's character way too unrealistic. But saying that, wouldn't you just love to bring Ivan home to mother? And didn't Gallen look simply gorgeous in this series? Not as good as in "Secret of the Heart" where he was much younger, but the whole Ivan package, mmm...
I can't help comparing "Golden Faith" to "Cold Blood Warm Heart", one of my all time favourite series despite all its flaws. I've seen CBWH like 3 times, but I walked away from Golden Faith knowing I wouldn't watch it again. 3.5/5

To Grow With Love
To Grow With Love 2006

Just wanted to thank you for this review, it's one of the most entertaining things I've read in a while. Haven't watched the series - no fan of Myolie, and snippets I've caught have repelled me with the constant weight-related 'morales' - so can't comment on your accuracy!, but I say, congrats, and keep the reviews coming. Cheers.

Dicey Business
Dicey Business 2006

Have to disagree... this series is above average in comparison with recent TVB productions, but is so disappointing in so many other ways. My biggest gripe is the focus on family and friendship rather than romantic relationships. Unfortunately "Dicey Business" is aimed at a mature audience, and consequently lacking in that which makes these soapies so good! ie. the gut-wrenching, pillow-soaked love triangles. Sure there is one, but poor Jessica being paired with men 10, 15 years her senior? Not to mention she and Michael have absolutely no chemistry. And most of the characters were annoying - what is with that? How can you enjoy a series when all the main characters irritate you? Jessica & her friend with the gambling problem, Michael turning evil, Bosco being such a dumb-ass, Tavia having a non-sensical role... I must say though that Bobby did a great job. His was the only character I liked. Actually, no, my favourite character was the boss's son - he's cute, and has a conscience! Anyway, final word is, series too long, plot uninteresting for a younger audience, generally just not satisfying, even for me who's a very big fan of Jessica. 2.5 stars.
