Agree with everything Ian Liew said. This is surely an underrated and overlooked series.

Great review.

Thank you so much for reviewing this! I have been contemplating as to whether I should write one myself, but having read yours, I am very happy with your assessment of it, even if I probably would have given it 4.5/5

The main highlight for me was the great acting from every member of the cast, particularly Shu Chang as Shui Sheng, and despite being female and wishing occasionally that Wu Yue was better looking, his acting was great and he really did grow on me. Ding Dian was also awesome! As were the older cast members including Mei Nian Sheng, Luo Hua Liu Shui 4 and the three disciples.

I also found the special effects quite impressive, the music was good, the scenery was good- basically, there was nothing to find fault with apart from feeling that the pace was a little slow in the middle, but it did serve well to build on Shui Sheng’s character and her relationship with Di Yun.

Although I've never liked the plot of this story, the adaptation itself is very good in terms of all the aspects mentioned.

Overall, Linked Cities has a great classic wuxia feel, and I found it more engaging than almost any other wuxia serial, maybe apart from Xiao Ao Jiang Hu 2001. It is not “flashy” like Return of the Condor Heroes, whether in terms of cast, hype or budget, but it seems fare less superficial- and it does help that the choice of actors seems to be based on talent as opposed to visual appeal. Thank you for the great review Ian! Hopefully more people will take notice of a series that is quite low profile, but definitely worth watching.
