A disappointment from a great director.
Thumbs up for Gong Li & Chow Yun Fat.

Bad. I apologise for any offence, as it's obvious the amount of effort and resources put into this production. But the end result is a poor excuse for lavishness. I must have been sleeping, because I missed the whole premise of the plot. Here also is a great lesson in excess. I found myself nostalgic for the old black and whites again, and pining for the bare necessities. Costume and make-up only succeeded in making all less attractive than they are. Strong performances, especially from the two leads, fail to redeem this over-long, dismal mess. Time better spent elsewhere.
