In YTTLJ itself, the use of the skill by Yang Xiao and Zhang Wuji is depicted as the reversal and redirection of the opponent's attacks (energy + stroke). Qian and Kun are two of the eight trigrams. The eight trigrams is a super system that comprises eight complete systems of energy and positioning. Qian specifically refers to the linking aspects of the universe while Kun refers to the reversal aspects. Together, they represent the flow of energy and movement throughout the universe.
Gaining deep awareness of Qian and Kun means that one is able to feel the pulse of the universe in the form of energy flow. Since this is a massive superset of what each individual is made up of and is able to achieve in terms of his movements and expending of energy, perfect understanding of Qian and Kun allows perfect understanding of how an opponent's energy comes towards you and how he is moving in relation to your own body.
The different levels of QKDNY denote different depths of understanding of Qian and Kun. The deeper one goes, the more in-depth his knowledge of the flow of energy from environment to person, person to environment, person to person. The extreme stage allows the practitioner to grab and direct energy as if it were tangible form like an approaching stick and then control the energy in various ways including but not limited to diversion, dissipation, reversal and amplification.
