Default Do you know any non-Asian who's into wuxia?

As some of you know, I run wuxiapedia.com, a site that hosts most of the English translations of novels as well as articles on wuxia related topics (and soon, the archives of popular discussions on these forums). Initially I thought most of the visitors would be Asians born in or moved to Western countries and couldn't read the original materials (which is why I made the site in the first place). I've been surprised many times recently though by looking at the site stats as well as feedback emails from readers. It turns out that a lot of them aren't Asians. Quite a lot are from Latino background (Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican, Latin American), and the second biggest non-Asian groups are Anglos (most of those are learning Chinese).

Here's the list of countries accessing wuxiapedia (sorted by hits and bandwidth) in September:

    United States
    Singapore
    Australia
    Indonesia
    Malaysia
    Canada
    Thailand

I personally don't know anyone into wuxia that is not Asian. Do you?

I mean into wuxia as in actually being interested in the novels (not just JY, GL, but stuff like ROTK, Water Margin etc.) or, heaven forbids, watching the rubbish that TVB dishes out on a monthly basis. I have a lot of non-Asian friends who like martial art flicks, like that Crouching Wombat, Hidden Wallaby shit and are into Asian culture, but they don't really know what wuxia is nor have they ever heard of the stuff we frequently discuss here.

Not really. I get emails from them and they are certainly not Chinese.

I am sure there are asians living in asia into Harry Potter, James Bond, Bat Man, Spiderman, Superman and ect. so it's obvious that there are non-asian into wuxia novels/series. If wuxia/ancient series are being dub into english/spanish/nonAsianLanguages, I am sure some non-asian people will watch it.

I'm caucasian and I am obsessed with wuxia. I love the English translations because I can only read and speak English.

I know at least three or four caucasians - including me - who are into wuxia. We all arrived at it via the "Shaw Bros, Golden Harvest" channel - but our interest has taken us further and is taking us further still.
I can speak only for myself now - I of course don't know much - still a newbie after a year or so... But I'd say I am into wuxia, yes (and a Western Slav, if that is of any interest...;-)).

The above applies to me as well. I just regret not starting to learn Chinese when I got back into watching HK movies over a decade ago (having first seen them on "Blackbelt Theater" on TV as a kid).

I've read a couple Gu Long / Jin Yong novels in translation and am inching my way toward being able to read wuxia novels in Chinese.

I’m another non-Asian who got into Wuxia by accident. I happened across an episode of LESH [LOCH] 03 and became enthralled by it. Because the episode was about 1/3 into the series I asked a Chinese friend to stay up late to watch it and tell the name. I wanted to purchase the series and did a net search to find it. [Not understanding a word of the dialogue didn’t seem to matter] That search led my to a source as well as the discovery of SPCNET. The Foxes and others had just revived the ROCH translation and got me interested in JY’s novels. I downloaded all of the ROCH chapters that existed up to that time and realized a ‘little’ editing would make it more readable for me. I casualty mentioned that I was doing this on the forum and several members asked me to share the edited chapters on the forum. I did so without knowing how much work was involved. That decision led to an email friendship with the wonderful Athena who provided many corrections and suggestions. I also got to ‘cross swords’ with the translators and get to know people like Bangs, rayon, BeeDreamer, dgfds01, mleung and others. Nearly 3 years later I’m still at it!!!

Like JamesG and Guo Xiang, I'm non-Asian and I love wuxia films, television and literature. I've enjoyed wuxia movies for years, but I didn't know about the books or the tv shows until I stumbled upon a version of ROCH on tv one day on the sadly-defunct International Channel. I did some web surfing to get more info and discovered this site and later on Wuxiapedia. I've been obsessed with wuxia ever since.

My fascination with wuxia has led me to start learning to speak and read Chinese, so I'll hopefully be able to watch/read even more in the future without relying on fan translations. I really appreciate the work the translators and fan subbers put in, but I'm too impatient to wait for them to translate everything! I've even started branching out to non-wuxia tv shows now.

My college professor for this one class I took (Eastern Novels, Western Prizes) actually told the whole class to go to Wuxiapedia to learn something about the genre, and, uh, I think there were many non-Asians who took the class...
