    Default The Axis

This is probably the last story I'll write until I've finished the others. But I often write 4 stories at the same time to channel the creative energy in the right areas. Updates on my other stories are coming up shortly...

    Default Foreward

    Foreward:

In the year 2666 AD an asteroid penetrated through the atmosphere and destroyed what mankind once knew as Earth. There were very few survivors following the disaster. Whilst the West was decimated, the East remained largely unscathed. In the year 2700 AD the Supreme Council of Mankind approved the creation of intelligent droids in a last stitched attempt to restore the earth to the way it was prior to the natural disaster. Subsequently the droids were dispatched to the West to locate human survivors and help rebuild the once all mighty United States of America.
In the year 2800 AD, highly intelligent cyborgs emerged from the West and revolted against the human race in the East. The cyborgs were lead by Maximus Clay, a former human and President of the United States of America. The war between mankind and cyborgs raged for another 200 years. In a last stitched attempt to save the world, the Supreme Council of Mankind sent an elite taskforce lead by a man known as the White Dove, to the West in 3000 AD in an attempt to quell the cyborg rebellion and restore peace on earth. It was later uncovered that the humans of the West had converted themselves into cyborgs using the driods that had been sent to aid them in the recovery process. The leader Maximus Clay, sought world dominance and immortality. He could only achieve his ambitions as a cyborg.

In the year 3001 AD, the White Dove and his elite taskforce was successful in setting up a defensive mechanism know as “The Axis” on the fringe of the Western borders. “The Axis” set up a magnetic field generator to divide the East from the West, humans from cyborgs, and good from evil. As long as “The Axis” existed, there was peace on Earth. Subsequently, Maximus Clay and his rebels were driven back to the West in that same year and has never been heard off again. Peace was restored on Earth.

During times of peace, humans and cyborgs entered into a number of trade agreements. The cyborgs in the West sought technology and raw materials, which was widely available in the East. Humans on the other hand sought natural resources such as water and oxygen which was readily available in the West but scarce in the East. Such trade agreements were vital in ensuring the survival of both the human race and the cyborgs.

It is now the year 3333AD on Earth. After 332 years of peace the Supreme Council of Mankind has received a number of scrambled messages from the West by someone claiming to be the White Dove warning of the potential attacks on mankind in the East by Maximus Clay. In particular, the warnings points to potential attacks on high rise buildings in the centre of Beijing. But the Supreme Council of Mankind has dismissed these warnings as a joke citing that it is not possible for the White Dove to still be alive after all these years. The people of Beijing are now going about their business, unaware of the potential danger that looms ahead…

Default Chapter 1: Surveillance of Beijing

    Chapter 1: Surveillance of Beijing

Under the cover of darkness hid a man. Though he could not be seen, his presence was exposed by a small puff of white smoke that circled in the air before disappearing from sight. The herbal aroma of burnt weed soon filled the room. Small flickers of red and yellow light were emitted from the end of a long cigarette as it burnt. The smoke moved in a continuous semi-circular pattern as the cigarette was lifted from the side of the right waist to mouth before being inhaled. The man gave a soft “puff” as he inhaled and exhaled the smoke from the cigarette. After a while the light flickered out as the cigarette had been entirely consumed. It was followed by a soft grinding sound as the man stamped the cigarette bud out with his astro boots. Moments later a flicker of silver light could be seen followed by a soft ‘click’ sound as the man took out a metallic silver lighter and pushed the lid opened.

Underneath the yellowish glow of light from the metallic silver lighter, one could just see what appeared to be a man in his late 30s. He had a scar about two inches deep and ten millimetres wide to the right side of his cheeks. Otherwise he had a rather handsome face. His brows creased slightly exposing numerous wrinkles on his forehead. It was obvious that he was older than he looked but yet somehow managed to preserve his youthful appearance. The texture of his skin was a rather darkish and unnatural olive brown. His black silky hair was parted at the fringe, equally on each side. It made him look rather refined and smooth. Like a true gentleman. He wore a pair of very dark shades on his face to shield his eyes from sight. A thick black coat made of polyester and graphite covered his athletic body. The coat was rather long and draped down to his ankles. A tight white collared shirt was worn underneath, displaying a ripple of toned muscles around the chest and mid-stomach region. A plain black tie draped down from the collar of the shirt. He wore a pair of matching black polyester and graphite pants. A pair of black astro boots covered his feet. He was at this moment fixing his gaze out of the window with his back leaning comfortably against the wall. His right leg was raised slightly as he reached into his pockets to take another cigarette in his right hand. He carried an emotionless expression on his face as he lifted the cigarette up to his mouth before raising his lighter to ignite the cigarette. He took a puff before gazing out of the window once more. The expression on his face made him look as hard and solid as a piece of marble stone.

The man flashed a slight grin as he looked out yonder, to the masses of bright nylon lights that lit up the city skyline like the million of stars in the galaxy. He appeared to be keeping a fixed gaze on a tall building directly in front of him. This particular building appeared to be around 760 stories tall. It was erected at the centre and at the heart of the busy Beijing central business district. It stood alone, high, and mighty above the rest of the high rise buildings in Beijing. In fact it was the tallest building ever built in this world and nearly reached into the clouds. The inter-changing red and blue nylon lights above the building read “The Yao Ming Tower”. This particular building is one of the famous landmarks that have been built in China sometime during 2050 AD in remembrance of the great basketball star Yao Ming. The building housed the various organisations and members that comprised of the Council of the World Union of Trade.

Looking up the man could see a stream of cars and automobiles flying around at the 700th storey level of the Yao Ming Tower. This formed the first layer of the Beijing super airway for flying automobiles. The second layer of the super airway was at the 600th storey level, the third layer at the 500th storey level and so on. The super airways were each six lanes wide. Three lanes provided access into the city of Beijing and three lanes provided the exit. There were also various smaller main airways and sub airways throughout the city. The airways were each controlled by electro magnetic rays, marked by rounded floating yellow pillars around 30 centimetres in length and 2 centimetres in diameter. The yellow pillars acted as a shield to prevent a flying automobile from going out of control, and crashing into the various high rise buildings nearby. The electro magnetic rays were regulated and controlled by a central computer system know as the “Transportotron”. There were also numerous super highways and main roads for land automobiles, bikers, skaters, and walkers at ground level. These also allowed easy access in and out of Beijing. But these highways were rarely used nowadays as 95% of the population preferred and had air transport. The evening was still early so the various airways were currently being congested by peak hour traffic. The man seemed to smile slightly as he observed the action in front of him.

Having finished another cigarette, the man decided to open the window to his dark room before stepping out onto the balcony. It was quite a windy night. Continuous loud “swishing”, and “swooshing” sounds could be heard as the wind brushed up against the various high rise buildings nearby. His hair was caught in the gentle breeze and brushed across the right side of his face. The dim full moon was shining brightly above. One could now see that the man stood at the highest level of a building that was located one block away from the Yao Ming Tower. It was around five hundred and fifthly stories above ground level. One could see that the streets below are packed shoulder to shoulder with people. Though from high above they seem like nothing more than just tiny specks of black dust moving from left to right, and right to left. As the man observed the streets below, a very tiny red dot suddenly emerged on the top right hand corner of his dark shades. The red dot flickered between on and off, but seemed to serve as some kind of warning of danger. Or perhaps it was some kind of tracking device.

“So he’s finally here!”, the man thought out loud to himself as he walked back into the dark room before sitting himself down on the black lounge suite.

Moments later the man reached into his pockets and threw what appeared to be some breadcrumbs out towards the balcony. With his right hand he seemed to have adjusted a mechanism on his dark black shades slightly. In an instant a computerised voice spoke, “Rithamus Processor Activated! You may begin scanning!”.

A blank image suddenly appeared on the top right hand corner of the man’s dark shades. It was followed by what appeared to be a map of Beijing. There was a tiny red dot flashing towards the corner around 7 to 8 blocks away. There was a stationary red dot positioned at the centre of the screen. It is now obvious that the dark black shades also serve as a display monitor for a highly powered compact computer. The red dot indicated the current positioning of the man, and the flashing red dot indicated the positioning of his target. The man seemed to fret for a while before adjusting his shades once more to pin point the location of his target. After a while the computerised voice spoke up again. It said, “Target located! McDonalds 3000 Cafe! Corner of Chen Street and Sima Way! Third Beijing Airway!”.

“Ah Ha!”, remarked the man out to himself out loud. Though his voice was rather course, it carried with it some excitement.

“Magnify target image to viewable!”, he continued as he adjusted a control panel on the left side of his shades.

The computerised voice replied, “Error! Unable to the magnify target image as requested! Target out of range!”.

“Dam it!”, cursed the man as he stood up before walking over to the wall. From the display screen at the back of his shades one could notice that he had activated night vision lenses. That’s how he was able to move around in the dark.

The was a small access portal on the wall. It was five centimetres by five centimetres in size. There were a total of five rounded female sockets on the small portal. Once again the man reached into his pockets before producing a small plug three centimetres by three centimetres. The plug contained 5 male sockets, matching the exact position of the five female sockets on the wall. After connecting the plug to the socket the man took a seat back on the black lounge suite again and waited. A tiny red dot flashed on and off at the end of the plug. It was obvious that a powerful main computer processor was currently being activated on the wall. It was connected to the dark shades by infra-red sensors from the socket and plug. After a while a pleasant computerised female voiced said, “Beijing Net Activated! Please logon!”.

    “User ID - 27893, Password – EWTHI>EDVO, Pin - 0000”, replied the man.

“Access Denied! Invalid User! Please try again!”, replied the computerised voice.

“What the heck?”, said the man as he stood up. He walked around and gently stroked the bottom of his chin, trying his hardest to figure out why he had been denied access to Beijing’s central computer. He has never been denied access previously.

The computer heard his comments and responded by saying, “Error! Unable to process request! Please try again! Or rephrase your request”.

The man did not make a comment nor did he respond. He just gave a slight snort. Though computers had become very advance they still lack the intellect of a human and were slow in comprehending certain words and sentences. Computers reacted to every single sentence spoken by humans as if it were some kind of request. Walking back and forth within the dark room, he finally thought of an answer. He said, “Request secure DNA logon”.

“Request being processed! Please wait…”, replied the computerised voice.

After a little while, it said, “Secure DNA logon loaded! Please place DNA sample in tray for analysis!”.

A small chute opened up from the side of the wall near the portal. A small try was exposed, ready to take and analyse whatever DNA sample was placed in the tray. The man plucked a strand of black silky hair from atop his head before placing it on the tray. A “snap” echoed through the room as the chute closed and retreated back into the wall. Tiny green lights flashed between on and off towards the bottom right hand corner of the chute to indicate that the main computer was currently in the process of analysing the sample.

“Positive sample identified! Welcome White Dove! Please re-enter your password and pin for access!”, replied the computerised voice.

It was now obvious that the man hiding in the room was none other than Mr Felix Cybill, call sign of “White Dove”. He was the former Head of the Secret Service over 300 years ago in Beijing. For what purpose he has returned is uncertain. He was assumed to have died during the Cyborg Wars. Wasting no time Felix leant over and punched his password and pin into the control panel on the access portal.

“Secure access granted! You have 90% access to Beijing Net at Top Secret Level and 100% Standard Access! There are no video messages in you in-box, and no kept video messages! Your last known logon was on 31 December 3001 AD! You have 9,000 credits remaining on your account! Awaiting further instructions!…”, said the computerised voice upon recognising the password and pin entered into the control panel.

“Request access to Beijing Securitytron and Beijing Klibitron!”, said Felix as he went to sit back down on his black lounge suit. He placed both hands behind the back of his head before laying down in a casual pose.

“Access granted!”, replied the computerised voice.

“Request 100% download of all secure and top secret files from Beijing Kilbertron to the Rithamus Processor!”, demanded Felix upon hearing that access to the main computer had been granted. He was aware that people could track him on the server and would be able to deny him access. So he sought to act first and copy all of the secure files so that he could access Beijing’s main computer system from his own processor.

“Request being processed! Please wait…”, replied the computerised voice as the green light flickered continuously on the control panel. Indicating that the request was currently being processed.

After a long while, the computerised voice replied, “The total files on Beijing Net constitute 90.5 million gigabytes! Download time is approximately 1 hours and 30 minutes! Do you wish to proceed?”.

“Yes!”, replied Felix. Upon receiving its command the main computer started to copy and transfer files to the Rithamus Processor. A file copy status bar appeared on the top left hand corner of Felix’s shades. He could manage just a slight smile as he watched the files being copied right before his eyes.

Moments later Felix turned his attention back on the flashing red dot on the top right hand corner of his right shade. He said, “Request access to security cameras in Beijing!”.

“Access granted!”, repeated the computerised voice once more.

On the left hand side of the black shades one could see a million of tiny images. They were all like tiny specks of sand over a small surface area. The images appeared to be coming from the various security cameras located in the city of Beijing. As Felix had not requested a specific camera, the computer compensated by uploading all of the images onto the left shade. The image of the map of Beijing with the tiny flashing red dot towards the corner and the stationary at the centre remained on the right shade. The flashing dot had remained stationary all this time. Indicating that Felix’s target had not moved at all during this time.

A slight smile emerged on Felix’s face as he said, “Request access to security cameras located at McDonalds 3000 Cafe! Corner of Chen Street and Sima Way! Third Beijing Airway!”.

“Access granted”, repeated the computerised voice.

One could now see there were a total of twenty six different video images uploaded on Felix’s left shade. He rolled his eyeballs slowly over each of the cameras. Then suddenly something caught his eye. He said, “Request access to camera number 21, magnify image to viewable!”.

“Request processed!”, replied the computerised voice.

Once the image from security camera number 21 in the McDonalds 3000 Café was uploaded on the left shade, one could see two men sitting around a table for four. They were at this moment engaging in a rather heated and serious conversation with each other. One man sat with his back facing towards the camera. He wore a black singlet made of graphite. His arms were exposed and looked as solid as rock. His hair was blue and combed back from the front. There was a tattoo of an anvil across his shoulder blade. It was edged in plain black ink.

“Could this man be the one they call ‘The Anvil’, Daniel Nitro?”, Felix thought inwardly as he studied the man carefully. He requested the computer for access of all 26 security cameras within the McDonalds 3000 Café once more in the hope of being able to catch a glimpse of the man with the anvil tattoo more closely. But no matter which camera angled he view, that particular man had somehow managed to stay just out of view. That man appeared to be an expert on the location of all of the cameras in the café, and knew the right places to sit. Felix then viewed the pair from camera 21 again. He studied them very closely. But he was unable to get a clear audio track to understand what they were saying. Both men sat near the kitchen and the restaurant was full of people. Everyone was talking with raised voices, making it impossible for the central computer to distinguish between one speaker to another.

Studying the second man more closely, Felix noticed something very unusual. There was a small glint of silver at the heal of the boots of the second man. After magnifying the image by 20 fold, one could see a tiny needle had been pierced at the back of the boots of the second man. It appearance to be some kind of tracking device. Perhaps the same tracking device that had sent signals and had been picked up by Felix’s computer the Rathimus Processor.

“Who is this man?”, Felix thought to himself. He then remembered that the Beijing Klibirtron database contained detailed files of everyone who lived in Beijing including secret agents, criminals, parliamentarians, and common folk.

Wasting no time, he requested, “Request positive identification of the man sitting on the right!”.

“Request is currently being processed! Please wait!…”, replied the computerised voice.

After a while it added, “Subject is named Alex Tsao! Black market weapons dealer! On the 10 Ten List of Most Wanted Criminals! Wanted on twenty five counts of murder! Three counts of assault on police officers! Sixty Seven counts of alleged rape! 50 counts of possession!”.

“Alex Tsao?”, thought Felix out loud as he tried searching deep in his memory banks for his own accounts of that name. But he could not come up with one. He had no previous dealings with the man named Alex Tsao.

“This must be a result of Carman’s doing! That naughty girl…”, thought Felix after a while with a tender smile.

Just as Felix was taking a keen interest in observing the events unfolding within the McDonalds 3000 Café a fluster could be heard outside his window. That immediately attracted his attention as he lifted his head to look outside through his right shade. He smiled upon seeing a plain white dove standing on the edge of the balcony whilst flapping its wings to clean itself. Moments later the white dove proceeded down to the balcony floor before feasting on the dry bread crumbs which had been thrown outside earlier.

Felix gave a slight grin as he said, “Princess, so you’re here at last!”.

    -------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile within a secret chamber 200 metres below the Forbidden City the Chinese National Defence Council are meeting to discuss matters of security with the Minister of Defence, Senator Athena Heldius. The secret chamber is about the size of a large boardroom. The portraits of the former Ministers of Defence since 2000 decorated the otherwise very plain and unimaginative silver metallic walls. The entrance to the chamber was locked and barricaded tightly by a large metallic bolt, preventing a possible intrusion, and breach of security. Driods armed a with automatic laser guns could be heard stomping outside of the chamber, walking up and down the corridor. The driods normally stand at 6’0 tall and are virtually indestructible. There was a large metallic table situated at the centre of the room. There was enough seating for around 30 people. But there were only 20 people currently present within the room. Many of the people sat in silence with blank stares towards the entrance whilst patiently awaiting for their host to arrive. Some fidgeted here and their with briefs and papers. Others activated the Internet portal in front of them and responded to various unopened and unanswered video messages in their inbox whilst they waited. The head of the table was designated by a small blue beacon placed towards the end near a large display screen. The Chinese national flag hung proudly above the screen for all to see. The seat behind the beacon was currently empty.

As the various people waited, the pleasant computerised voice of a female spoke, “Welcome ladies and gentlemen! Sorry to keep you waiting! I have just received a message advising that Senator Athena Heldius has been held up in peak hour traffic! She will be here in approximately 30 minutes time!”.

A loud murmur went around the room upon receiving the message. Many of the people frowned as they looked at their watches. Some got up from their chairs and strode around the room to relieve their anxiety. Others sat and patiently waited.

“I can’t believe this! The Senator is late, yet again, for another meeting! Who does she think she is?”, protested a man in his late 40s out loud whilst folding his arms in protest.

“Patience Defence Secretary Chao, the Senator will be here shortly!”, replied a man in his late 60s in a firm and authoritative voice. This man wore a white business suit, blue tie, and a pair of dark shades. He had a noble and authoritative air about him.

“Besides, it’s wise not to be upset as the Senator is also the precious daughter of our current President after all!”, he continued as he shot a side glance over towards the man who had just spoken up.

“Humph!”, replied the man named Secretary Chao, unmoved by those comments, as he leant back on his chair. He had a disgusted look on his face.

The man sitting next to Secretary Chao, took another glance down towards his watch. Clearing his voice he decided to speak up, “Deputy Chairman Guan, why don’t we vote you in as the acting Chairman and convene this meeting without the Senator? We already have quorum and may commence our business! I have some urgent matters to attend to in 45 minutes time, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to leave and miss my appointment if we don’t start immediately!”.

Turning to cast a glance around at all of the members around the room he said, “What does everyone else think of this suggestion?”.

“Yeah! Yeah! That’s a great idea Senior Agent Chang!”, replied the rest of the members as they raised their voices. It was custom in politics to say ‘Yeah! Yeah!’ when agreeing with a proposal being put on the floor.

“Well, let’s put this to the vote then!”, said the man named Deputy Chairman Guan.

Those members who were standing returned to their seats to vote. The others had already punched a command into the control panel to cast their votes. After a while the computerised voice spoke up, “All eligible votes have been submitted! 16 are in favour of the motion, 2 against, and 2 sustain! Congratulations Deputy Chairman Guan, you have been officially elected as the Acting Chairman until the Senator arrives! Authorisation of powers have been granted! You may commence the meeting!”.

“Thank you! The 953rd meeting of the National Defence Council is now in session!”, replied Acting Chairman Guan as he activated the display monitor to officially convene the meeting. He noted the presence of the other 19 members currently in attendance. He also noted the written apologies from other members outlining the reasons for their non-attendance at the meeting. Shortly afterwards the members agreed to the Minutes detailing the actions and outcomes of the previous meeting.

Once all of the formalities had finished, Acting Chairman Guan said, “Okay the first agenda item for the day is the reinstatement of Captain Anya Scifo, who is currently serving within the Beijing Police Force, to her previous post as the Deputy Senior Agent within the Secret Service! This motion has been put forth by the Senior Chief of Police, Professor Adam Mobilius!”.

Turning to the floor, he added, “What does to crocus have to say about this? Let those in favour of the motion speak first!”.

Professor Adam Mobilius, stood up to address the floor. One could see that he was a simple man. He wore a dark blue uniform with white trimmings. The words ‘POLICE’ was written at the front of his shirt. A small Chinese national flag rested on the top right hand corner of his shirt. He appeared to be a man in his late 50s. A small moustache covered his ageing face. He looked troubled and stressed. Possibly as a result of the line of his work. He said, “Captain Anya Scifo was placed in the service of the Beijing Police force around 6 months ago, following her suspension from the Secret Service! She has performed above expectations and has applied herself fully on a day to day basis since that time! She has helped us solved a number of crimes and has been a model officer! Therefore I do not see a valid reason as to why she should not be re-instated to the Secret Service! That’s where she belongs! She’s a top operative and I feel her talents are being wasted on the Beijing Police Force!”

“I agree! Besides Captain Anya Scifo is one of the ‘Gifted’ people! A rare talent and should be recognised as such! Her intellect and physical abilities surpass many! She should be re-instated!”, said a man wearing a grey suit, red tie, and dark shades as he gave a little nod towards the Chief of Police. This man wore an identity pass with the words, ‘Mr Rob Pao, National Security Adviser to the President’.

“I disagree! Although Captain Anya Scifo has performed well during these past few months for the Beijing Police Force, I would still be reluctant to re-instate her to the Secret Service!”, rebutted Senior Agent Chang as he shot a cold glance towards the Chief of Police and National Security Adviser Pao for speaking for the motion.

“The error of judgement that she made as the leader of the ‘Black Cobra’ operation in Chinese Taipei, causing her original suspension, should not be overlooked! That error of judgement cost the lives of over 500 innocent people, including women and children! She has embarrassed our President, not to mention whole of the Secret Service organisation with her sloppy work! We can’t afford to have these kinds of mistakes again! I propose that she remain assigned to the Beijing Police Force until further notice! The Secret Service will review the decision in 3 years time!”, rebutted Senior Agent Chang as he stood up and pumped both of his fists on the table. A loud ‘bang’ echoed through the room. He appeared to be clearly annoyed by the proposal being put forth by the Chief of Police.

“Relax Senior Agent Chang, we’re all aware of your personal feelings on this matter! We’re also aware that your son died in that incident and your sympathy is with us! However as always, we should put this motion on the floor and let the members decide on this issue!”, Acting Chairman Guan said as he raised his hand in the air to calm Senior Agent Change down.

Turning to the floor he said, “Let’s put the motion to the vote!”.

Once again the members all punched their votes into the control panel. After a while, the computerised voice spoke up, “All eligible votes have been submitted! 2 vote is in favour of the motion, 17 against, and 1 sustain! The motion to re-instate Captain Anya Scifo has been denied! Please proceed with next agenda item!”.

“Humph!”, snorted Professor Adam Mobiluis out loud upon realising that he and National Security Adviser Pao were the only ones in support of the motion. No one else on the committee had backed him up. So he was greatly annoyed and disappointed by his colleagues. He folded his arms and turned his head away in disgust. But deep inside he couldn’t help but feel a little joy, as the decision meant that he had retained the services of a very rare and talented police officer until at least the next meeting. He calmed down somewhat upon this realisation and turned his focus back on the meeting.

Pointing with an index finger to the display screen, Acting Chairman Guan said, “The next item on the agenda is the re-instatement of Secret Agent, Louis Astro, call-sign ‘The Silencer’. This motion has been put forward by Senator Athena Helduis and seconded by myself! What does the quorum have to say about this issue?”.

Giving a slight sigh he continued after a while, “It is unfortunate and regrettable, however, that Senator Athena Helduis is not yet here to discuss this matter! As it stands I must declare a conflict of interest as the Acting Chairman on this issue, and have to stand down from the floor! I am therefore, unable to speak either for or against the motion! Is there anyone in this room that is willing to speak on behalf of this motion?”.

There was a long silence in the room. The members glanced at each other. Some nervously at Senior Agent Chang. A good five minutes had passed but no one spoke up for the motion. They did not wish to offend Senior Agent Chang. But standing up and speaking for the motion, they would expose themselves as a potential enemy. Something the majority of the members wanted to avoid.

Taking this opportunity, Senior Agent Chang stood up. He gave an ironic laugh at the same time. He said, “Senator Athena Heldius is young and naive! I fully understand her reasons for putting this motion on the floor! After all she was the one who signed off on and authorised the billion-dollar project that lead to the creation of Secret Agent, Louis Astro. He was subsequently created after taking the dominant genes from the ‘Gifted’ people!”.

Nodding in agreement, Defence Secretary Chao, added, “Secret Agent Louis Astro, after all, is supposed to be the elite of the elite, and the strongest warrior of the ‘Gifted’ ones! So I’m not surprised that Senator Athena Helduis is unable to let go and admit that the project has been a big disaster! But we on the floor know better!”.

Defence Secretary Chao, and Senior Agent Chang exchanged pleasant nods shortly after. It was obvious that they shared the same views. Taking an opportunity to stride around the room whilst starring down at the members, Senior Agent Chang, continued, “But there’s a good reason why Secret Agent Louis Astro has been frozen and locked in the dungeons of Siberia! If I had my way he would have had his memory wiped out and be terminated for his actions! Secret Agent Louis Astro is a danger to himself and to society in general! Let me ask the floor, whether they’ve forgotten that Secret Agent Louis Astro is the main culprit for the disaster that occurred during the ‘Black Cobra’ operation in Chinese Taipei? He is the same man that turned against fellow Secret Agents and assisted the rebels!”.

“HE SHOT MY SON FOR GOD’S SAKE! SO WHY IS THERE A MOTION FOR HIS RE-INSTATEMENT? ARE YOU TRYING TO GET ME KILLED AS WELL?”, shouted Senior Agent Chang as he smashed a fist on the table before sitting down. His face had turned red from anger, and he was now starring down at Acting Chairman Guan.

The members on the floor remained silent. Half appeared to be siding with Senior Agent Chang. The other half appeared to be deep in thought. After a while, Acting Chairman Guan spoke up. He said, “Let’s put this motion to vote then!”.

Following the normal process the members all punched their votes into the control panel once more. After a while, the computerised voice spoke up, “All eligible votes have been submitted! 8 votes are in favour of the motion, 8 against, 3 sustain, and 1 conflict of interest noted! The motion to re-instate Secret Agent, Louis Astro, is deadlocked and will be referred until the next meeting! This issue will be the first agenda item at the 954th meeting of the National Defence Council! Please proceed with next agenda item!”.

There was more support for the motion to re-instate Secret Agent Louis Astro, than for the re-instatement of Captain Anya Scifo. But is was not surprising given that the some of the members had wanted to please and side with Senator Athena Helduis and Acting Chairman Guan in the hope of securing a favour down the track. After a while, Acting Chairman Guan said, “The next item on the agenda requires a thorough discussion! The issue surrounds the coded transmissions received from West by a man claiming to be the ‘White Dove’! This issue was discussed and the coded messages were dismissed as a joke at the previous meeting! But we have just received another coded transmission from him today! So it has been tabled a second time for discussion!”.

Sounding very serious, Acting Chairman Guan, continued whilst pointing to the coded message on the large display monitor, “As you can all see, this messages claims that terrorists are currently surveying Beijing and planning a possible attack on high rise buildings! The ‘Yao Ming Tower’ has been identified as a possible target! What do the crocus think? Are we to take this threat seriously? Or are we to dismiss the coded transmission once more?”.

    -------------------------------------------------

At this very moment, in the heart of Beijing a stream of flying automobiles can be seen suspended in mid-air on the 6th Beijing Superairway leading towards the Forbidden City. The line stretched back almost 800 metres. But the flying automobiles did not move an inch. There were two vehicles at the front of the congestion. One of the vehicles had been smashed up on the side. There was blood on the front windscreen. A man could be seen leaning out the front window with his head down. He was laying motionless and bleeding rapidly. The other vehicle had been turned upside down. The driver and the passenger where no where in sight. They appeared to have fallen miserably to their deaths on the streets below. The roof of the car was stained with blood. It was obvious that a horrific accident had just taken place moments earlier. Right towards the back of the line was a flying limousine that was black in colour, lined with silver trimmings. One could tell that it was a government limousine by the four small Chinese red flags that were placed at the antennas at the front and rear of the car. The windows were tinted preventing anyone from being able to gaze inside and observe the driver and passenger.

From the outside one could just hear the constant complaints and nagging of a young woman. Though her voice was sweet and soft, one could tell that she was filled with a touch of frustration. She said to the driver, “Chauffer, is there no other route that we can take to proceed towards the Forbidden City? I’m already terribly late! There’s an important matter that I must resolve and settle at today’s National Defence Council meeting!”.

“Senator Athena Helduis, I’m terribly sorry, but there’s no other way! All of the surrounding Superairways have been closed off! There’s been a horrific accident ahead! We’ll just have to wait until the traffic police patrol and emergency workers clear it up! Hopefully there won’t have been any damage to the Transportron network, and that the electro-magnetic probes still work! Otherwise we could be stuck here for another good hour!”, replied the Chauffer at the front of the limousine.

Inside the limousine, one could see sitting right at the back, a pretty young lady in her early 20s. She wore a black business suit, matching black pants, white shirt, and a black tie. A small Chinese national flag was embroidered at the top right hand pocket of the suit. A pair of dark shades covered her exquisite and thin face. Her skin was as white as snow and in contrast her lips were rose red. Her body was slim and shaped like a pair. She had very soft and elegant curves. Unlike other girls of her age, her hair was extremely short, and combed to the side. Her fringe was parted slightly at the front. She projected a very controlled and powerful image. The young lady was none other than, Senator Athena Heldius. The 24 year old daughter of the current President of China, Dr Gallen Heldius. She has only recently been elected to the Senate and was given the important post of Minister of Defence by her father.

Upon hearing the Chauffer’s comments, Athena, gave a long and loud sigh as she protested, “Another hour? God dam it! Why must it be today? Any other day would be fine but not today! Oh not today!”.

“Why? What’s happening today?”, the young Chauffeur at the front couldn’t help but ask whilst casting a side glance over his shoulder.

But Athena chose not to respond. All she managed to say was, “Its nothing!”.

She was aware that matters regarding defence and security could not be discussed openly. Especially to a young Chauffer whom had yet to gain her trust. She opened up her brief case and started to read over some of the journals and books that she had brought with her. Even though there had been various advancements in technology, many people still preferred to have the hard copy of various documents. There were many viruses on the systems and networks that could destroy the various documents stored on the system at any given time.

The Chauffer knew that something was up. But since his passenger wasn’t going to say, he didn’t want to press the issue. So he sat silently and glanced ahead. Waiting patiently for the traffic to clear. After a while he had a thought. He pressed the control panel just below the steering wheel to access Beijing Net.

After a while the Chauffer could be heard remarking out loud in an excited voice, “Senator Heldius, I think you should have a look at this!”.

“What is it?”, questioned Athena as she touched an switch on the control panel to lower the bullet proof screen separating the driver’s seat from the passenger’s seat. She leaned to the front so that she could see the display monitor at the drivers seat.

Pointing to the red square on the display monitor, the Chauffer said, “I wanted to log onto the Beijing Net to access information on the police’s response time and proposed action plan to clean up this traffic incident. That way I’ll be able to calculate how much longer we’re going to be stuck here in this traffic jam. That’s when I came across this!”.

Athena was dumb founded as she glanced at the red square on the screen. It meant absolutely nothing to her. Also she was one of those people who wasn’t really up to speed with the many advancements in technology. A little puzzled she asked, “Well what does this red square mean?”.

“I appears that I’ve accidentally loaded a tracking program on Beijing Net! This red square indicates that someone has linked into the Beijing Net from one of the apartment buildings nearby and is currently downloading secured files from the Kilbertron network!”, replied the Chauffeur as he tried to pinpoint the exact location from which the information was being accessed. He appeared to be a man who was very knowledgable of the Beijing computer network.

“Are you sure? That’s impossible! Only myself, the Deputy Chair of the National Defence Council, and Senior Agent Chang of the Secret Service have downloading access to secure files from the Klibertron network! But they’re all currently at the meeting!”, responded Athena in some shock. Various thoughts were running through her mind at this moment in time. If what the Chauffer was telling her, was the truth, then there was a major security breach occurring right at this moment. As the Minister for Defence, she knew she had to put a stop to this. But she did not know how. Besides she was stuck in traffic.

“I don’t know how it happened! But I’m 100% certain that someone is currently accessing and downloading files from the Kilbertron server from a remote access location!”, replied the Chauffeur once more.

But Athena was still deep in thought and did not appear to hear the Chauffer’s comments. After a while she had thought of a solution. She said in an urgent rush, “Report this incident to the IT Security Department in the Secret Service! They’ll be able to prevent whomever it is from downloading files off the Kilbertron server!”.

“Senator, I’m afraid that’s not going to be off much use! The IT Security Department in the Secret Service can only prevent a hacker from accessing the system! They won’t be able to stop an authorised user from doing so!”, replied the Chauffer whilst shaking his head.

“Then report the incident to the Beijing Police Department! They’ll be able to send a squad out to the building, investigate the matter, and if necessary arrest whomever is downloading the files!”, continued Athena in a frantic rush.

“Senator, we can try! But apart from the traffic patrol officers, the rest of the Beijing Police force are at their 900th Annual Ball down at the City Hall to celebrate the graduation of many fine new recruits! I don’t know if any of the regular officers are in a fit condition or state of mind to help! Most of them are probably already drunk out of their minds! After all this is the only time during the year where they are off duty and can celebrate!”, replied the Chauffer as he pressed a few more switches on the control panel.

“How can you possibly know all of this?”, questioned Athena once more. The young Chauffeur appeared to know too much about the government and the police force for her liking.

“I’m a former police officer myself, so of course I would know!”, replied the young Chauffer with a smirk.

Athena was becoming curious by the moment with her young Chauffeur. She couldn’t help but ask, “Why did you decide to quit the Beijing Police Force? You seemed like a very knowledgable and able person!”.

The Chauffer gave a little bit of a sigh as he said, “Don’t ask! It’s a very long story!”.

Changing the subject, the Chauffer continued, “I know someone who might be able to help us resolve this situation!”.

“Who?”, asked Athena as she thought over what had just been said the Chauffer. Infact she was thinking right at this moment, “What would he leave the police force to be a Chauffer?”.

Looking directly at Athena for the first time since, the Chauffeur said, “We could report this incident to Captain Anya Scifo! She’s the most able and reliable officers currently on the Beijing Police Force! Besides she’s one of the ‘Gifted’ after all and should have no problems tracking down whomever it is that is download those files from Kilbertron!”.

The corks could be heard popping one after another down at the Beijing City Hall. Thousands of yellow and red balloons streamed down from the ceiling like tiny little raindrops falling down from the sky. Deafening cheers and applause echoed throughout the room, as a thousand hats were thrown in the air to officially mark the graduation of a thousand new cadets to the Beijing Police Force. But as the cadets, police officers, and various officials joined together in celebration, the low ring tone of a single portable communicator unit could be heard at a central table. But the table and its chairs were presently empty. Indicating that all of the occupants were busy elsewhere in the hall. The majority of the people had now gathered around the dance floor. Some stood quietly to listen to the dance music that was being played. Others chatted quietly amongst themselves. Catching up on the good old times of a year ago. Many enjoyed the opportunity to invite their partners to a slow dance and waltz underneath the flashing nylon lights of red and blue. The portable communicator on the central table continued to ring and ring non-stop. But no one appeared to have heard or paid much attention to the ring tone. They were all having too much fun to care.

“Who’s god dam communicator is this? I wonder who’s calling? Don’t they know what day of the year this is?”, remarked a young cadet to himself as he approached the central table. He appeared to be a young man in is late teens. At most he would be a man who had recently celebrated his 18th birthday. He had a medium built body and was of medium height. He wore a white cadet’s suit with dark blue trimmings. A Chinese national flag had been embroidered onto the top right hand pocket. His cadet hat had landed on the central table when he threw it in the air during the cadet graduation ceremony. He had come to retrieve his hat when by chance he heard the ring tone on the table.

Placing his cadet hat back on his head before raising the portable communication unit in the air he shouted, “Does anyone know whose communication unit this is?”.

Someone from the dance floor replied by shouting, “You idiot! Why don’t you use your brains and look at the name plate on the table? Then you’ll know who owns that communication unit!”.

The young cadet followed the instructions and read the metallic silver name plate on the table. The words ‘Captain Anya Scifo’ had been carved in bold gold ink.

“Captain Anya Scifo!”, remarked the young cadet in some excitement and awe. He had heard various stories and rumours about the Captain. She had become quite a legend and had built up huge reputation upon joining the police force. Many of her juniors and peers in the Beijing Police Force had greatly admired her. They also sided with her on many issues and were aware that the Head of the Secret Service and Secretary of Defence had harshly and unfairly treated her when handing out their sentence six months ago. The young cadet was now very eager to meet his idol and hero. He had joined the Beijing Police Force simply because he had aspired to be like the Captain that he had heard so much about. He shared the same ideals and wanted to perform many heroic deeds, protect the weak, and save the lives of the innocent people.

Grasping the portable communication unit that was still ringing like crazy, he shouted, “It’s Captain Anya Scifo’s communication unit! Does anyone know where she is?”.

Someone else shouted from the crowd, “You god dam idiot! Why don’t you activate the tracker on the communication unit! Then you’ll know where Captain Anya Scifo is at!”.

Following the instructions once more, the young cadet activated the tracking device to the side of the portable communication unit. Each officer of the Beijing Police Force had a portable communication unit that had a tracking device. So if an officer went missing in action they could use the unit to locate the officer and vice versa. It was a very important device that often ensured the safety of each of the officers. Particularly when they are held up in a hostage situation. But tonight, for some reason, Captain Anya Scifo had left her portable unit behind on the table. It was a rather careless and clumsy act, not commonly associated with the Captain. So the young cadet was a little shocked by this act. The portable unit continued to ring non-stop.

After a while, the soft computerised voice of a female said, “Personnel tracker activated! Captained Anya Scifo is located in the female rest room on the West Wing!”.

“Female rest room? What could she be doing there, when everyone is out here celebrating!”, the young cadet remarked in amazement. It was also a peculiar way in which to meet his idol. After a while he made up his mind that he would return the portable unit to Captain Anya Scifo regardless of the situation.

Upon reaching the West Wing, the young cadet noticed a line of female officers waiting in line in single file to use the female rest room. Most of them were dressed in fine cocktail dresses of various colours ranging from blue, yellow, purple, orange, red, blue, pink, black, grey, and white. The dresses were very tight and clasped closely to the body. Such dresses were designed to show off the finely toned and athletic bodies of the young female officers.

“Where do you think you’re going? Junior officer!”, questioned a young lady wearing a purple cocktail dress with matching purple hair upon noticing that a young male cadet had approached them.

Some of the other female officers began to tease the poor lad by remarking, “If you’re looking for the men’s room, you’ve taken the wrong turn!”.

“Perhaps he’s not a ‘real’ man!”, joked some of the other female officers with wide grins.

“Aren’t you a handsome fellow!”, joked some of the others whilst giggling.

“C-O-M-E and join us!”, added the others.

“Knock it off!”, shouted the young lady wearing the purple dress in a very authoritative tone. The other female officers immediately shut up upon hearing her orders. It was obvious that she was quiet a senior officer in the Beijing Police Force.

Turning to the poor young cadet who was still being mocked and teased silently by some of the female officers who were pulling various faces at him, the young lady in purple asked, “Who are you? What are you doing here? Speak!”.

The portable unit was still ringing in the young cadet’s hands. But he was hesitant to hand it over to the young lady in purple. He decided to say, “Young miss, I am Cadet Frankie Mystro! May I have the pleasure to know your name and rank?”.

“Oh! So he’s trying to pick up young Miss Chang!”, whispered some of the female officers to each other as they watched to the side.

“He’s got no chance!”, added some others whilst giggling and giving each other a slight nudge to the rib cage.

“Shh! Or the Deputy Sergeant will get upset!”, whispered others.

“I am Deputy Sergeant Sharon Chang, 10th senior officer to Captain Anya Scifo!”, proudly replied the young lady in purple. He ignored the various comments and jokes being shared amongst the more junior officers waiting in line to use the rest room.

After a while she repeated her earlier question, “Well, can you tell me what it is that you are you doing here?”.

Handling over the portable communication unit over to Deputy Sergeant Chang, Cadet Mystro said, “I’ve got Captain Anya Scifo’s communication unit with me! It’s been continually ringing for the past few minutes! So it must be an urgent call!”.

“Urgent call? What urgent call? Captain Anya Scifo, has given us specific orders that she’s not to be disturbed! Even when she’s in the rest room!”, replied Deputy Sergeant Chang as reached to take the portable communication unit in he own hands.

Giving the young Cadet a glare, she added, “That includes any disruption by calls on her communication unit! Understand?”.

Deputy Sergeant Chang was just about to switch off the phone when Cadet Mystro rushed in to say, “Wait! It’s been ringing for a while, so it must be urgent! Why don’t you at least take the call and see who it is!”.

Deputy Sergeant Chang gave Cadet Mystro another glare and was about to switch off the phone in spite of his advice, but then decided against it. She immediately placed the portable communicator in front of her face before pressing the button to take the call. She could be heard remarking, “Captain Anya Sicfo’s communicator, Deputy Sergeant Chang speaking!”.

Not long after, someone could be heard frantically shouting from the other end of the communicator, “Deputy Sergeant Chang, this is Senator Athena Heldius! Where is Captain Anya Scifo? I wish to speak to her immediately! Do you understand?”.

“Ah… Ah… Yes… Yes… Senator Athena Helduis! I’ll… I’ll immediately put you through to Captain Anya Sicfo! Just… Just wait a moment!”, mumbled Deputy Sergeant Chang losing her composure slightly. She was quite shocked and startled upon realising that it was none other than the Minister of Defence that was on the line. She was not used to dealing directly with someone of such a high status and authority. So it was indeed an urgent matter and she needed to act fast. But she was slightly panic-stricken at the same time.

Deputy Sergeant Chang immediately rushed to up to the entrance of the female bathroom. Two female officers were currently guarding it. They were preventing everyone from entering the bathroom, to the loud protests of the female officers at the front of the line. Both of the female officers wore black dresses and dark shades. Both of ladies were rather attractive and had slim figures. Both wore an emotionless expression on their face and were unmoved by the various protests from the more junior officers wanting to use the bathroom.

“Lieutenant Catherine Yan! Lieutenant Michelle Baxter! What’s the Captain’s current status? I have an urgent call from Senator Athena Heldius that I need to put through to her!”, questioned Deputy Sergeant Chang motioning to open the door.

“Ha! The Senator has made a personal call to our Captain!”, gasped Lieutenant Yan and Lieutenant Baxter together. Both of their faces turned a slightly white complexion.

Giving a salute with her right hand, Lieutenant Yan replied, “Deputy Sergeant Chang, its no use! The present situation is as same as before! But the Captain has now locked herself inside!”.

“She’s refusing to come out!”, added Lieutenant Baxter to the side.

“What’s wrong with her? Do you know? Is she drunk?”, frantically asked Deputy Sergeant Chang, knowing that Senator Athena Heldius was at the other end waiting to speak with Captain Anya Scifo. Senator Athena Heldius could also hear the various conversations that were going on outside. So it was a rather awkward position for them to be in at this particular moment in time. Being drunk wasn’t going to impress the Senator either.

Shooting a glare towards Deputy Sergeant Chang, Lieutenant Yan replied, “The Captain’s definitely not drunk! She’s just not in a good mood at the moment and does not wish to speak with or see anyone this evening!”.

“She’s shut herself in the bathroom since taking a call from the Chief of Police, Adam Mobilius!”, added Lieutenant Baxter to the side.

A crackling voice of a female could suddenly be heard through the communicator. It said, “Deputy Sergeant Chang, I have an idea of what has just happened!”.

It was the voice of Senator Athena Heldius from the other end of the communicator. Despite not having attended the meeting, she was able to guess that the Chief of Police had delivered some bad news to Captain Anya Scifo. Mainly that her appeal to be re-instated to the Secret Service had been turned down by the National Defence Council. That’s why she had locked herself in the bathroom. She was greatly disappointed and depressed upon hearing of the outcome. After a momentarily pause, Senator Athena Heldius continued, “This matter is of national security! Is there any way that you could pass the communicator through to your Captain, so that I may speak with her personally?”.

“Why don’t you slip the communicator underneath the door!”, suggested young Cadet Mystro, who had just walked to the front of the line and had overheard the various conversations.

As suggested Lieutenant Yan took the communicator from Deputy Sergeant Chang before slipping it underneath the door. The bathroom was sound proof and sealed on the inside, so the various people could not hear the conversation that was taking place inside between Senator Athena Heldius and Captain Anya Scifo. The door opened up in around just 10 minutes time. A young lady in her mid 20s emerged from the bathroom, standing at the centre of the entrance both of her hands resting on her waist. She stood in a very upright and commanding position. She was a rather tall young lady standing around 183cms above the ground. She had a very slim figure in the shape of a pear and well rounded curves. Like a couple of large basketballs, her firm, and rounded breasts stuck out from the chest. She wore a tiny black dress that showed of her perfectly toned body. It stuck to her like an extra layer of skin. A pair of dark shades covered her face. Her long black silky hair flowed freely down to her shoulders. She wore a very emotionless expression on her face, but had appeared to have been able to shake her sadness and emotions aside.

Shifting her head left and right to observe the various officers that stood before her, she said, “I just been given an urgent assignment of national security from Senator Athena Heldius! I need 9 volunteers for this expedition! Who will come along and assist me?”.

“I will!”, shouted Lieutenant Yan, Lieutenant Baxter, Deputy Sergeant Chang, and six other junior officers that were presently standing in line waiting to use the bathroom.

“Captain, with your permission I’d also like to volunteer my services to this expedition!”, added Cadet Mystro to the side.

“Who are you? To which Captain do you report? Speak!”, demanded Captain Anya Scifo as she casted a glare towards the young cadet.

“Captain Scifo, I’m a new cadet to the police force! My name is Frankie Mystro! I have just graduated this evening and have yet to be assigned a post!”, enthusiastically replied young Cadet Mystro.

After a while he added, “With your permission, I’d like to request a post to your division!”.

“Only the Chief of Police has the power to assign young cadets to their proper post! I cannot take you on this expedition since you’ve not yet been posted to any division! To take you on this expedition would be against Beijing Police Force regulations!”, replied Captain Anya Scifo, unmoved by the young Cadet’s requests.

“But…. But… But…”, protested young Cadet Mystro in vain.

“Cadet Mystro, I’ve made my final decision on this matter! Please return to the party and enjoy yourself! You’re dismissed! Goodbye!”, continued Captain Anya Scifo as she waved her.

Turning to Lieutenant Yan, Lieutenant Baxter, Deputy Sergeant Chang and the others, she gave the following instructions, “Officers get to your vehicles immediately! Units will be mobilised in groups of two! Senior officers, please make sure to partner with a junior officer! My orders, mission details, strategic formation, and target outcome, will be transmitted through your personal communicators! Please act according to my instructions! Any disobedience will be punished! Dismiss and engage!”.

“Yes Captain!”, replied the other officers together as they proceeded to exit the Beijing City Hall to access their vehicles. At the same time the other female officers lined up in single file to use the bathroom, gave a sigh of relief upon realising that Captain Anya Scifo was leaving. They had been waiting for quite some time and needed to relieve themselves immediately.

Turning towards Lieutenant Catherine Yan, Captain Anya Scifo added, “Lieutenant Yan, according to my rotation policy, you’re my second in command today! Your unit will lead and I’ll follow!”.

Sounding serious she, added, “Lieutenant Yan, I know you have a tendency to act for a quick result! But on this mission, you’re to first secure the building and await my arrival! Do not make any rash decisions! Understand?”.

“Yes Captain”, saluted Lieutenant Yan as she proceeded with a junior officer towards her vehicle to lead the expedition.

Turning to Lieutenant Baxter, she said, “Lieutenant Baxter, you’ll be my partner for this expedition! Come with me!”.

“Captain, as you wish!”, replied Lieutenant Baxter with a slight bow.

As the group of female officers disbanded, Lieutenant Baxter, couldn’t help but ask, “Captain Scifo, Why is it that you refused to take young Cadet Mystro on this expedition? I’ve read his training files! He appears to be a very talented and able recruit! It would be good to obtain his services within our division in the future! Tonight would have been a good test for him!…”.

“You don’t know that much! It was a rookie officer that betrayed me during my last expedition within the Secret Service! I do not intend to make the same mistake twice! Besides this is an urgent mission concerning national security! Cadets should not be burdened with such a high priority task!”, replied Captain Anya Scifo as she proceeded towards her police vehicle.
