This is the beginning of a new year and a great time to talk about all the movies that're coming out. I'm starting this thread to discuss about our favourite movies and some of the more general side of movie industry and also the technicalities.

For example, what are some of the improvements you'd like to see in movies?

Things you hope NOT to see in movies? and

Soundtracks, plots, cinematography and scripts you find appreciative of.


Anyone is free to ask questions and put up recommendations.




To get things started, I like the beautiful cinematography of Asian international blockbusters such as The Myth, Hero and House of Flying Daggers, but when it comes to the plot, I found most of them lame and very uncreative. The movie is worth my ticket price, but the story is not.

Do you notice in the Asian movie industry, you keep seeing the same faces, same actors in the past few years? Unlike the 90s where there’s a wide range of movie actors and actresses, now they just repeat the same formula, with the same actors.

And today, the chemistry between the leads tend to depend more on their acting skills, which is getting more and more stereotyped. Most relationships are forgettable and emotionally unengaging. There's just no novelty.

On the other hand, I found Batman Begins highly recommendable. The pace, script, plot and the actors are good. The soundtrack is very suitable as well.

The internation Asian films use the same actors all the time because they need to generate revenue. Unlike TV, where revenue comes from advertiser, movie's renevue comes from ticket, DVD, VCD sales. So, in order to guarantee profit, they need to cast establish movies stars in their movies. That's why u see Zhang Zhi Yi everywhere.

But there are actually many smaller budget films that have other actors in it, for example, 'Perhaps Love'. I don't think u see Jacky Cheung and Zhou Xun all the time in movies.

I like the way they did the musical numbers in Perhaps.Love

But it was a bit unorganized btw the real and acting lives of Zhou Xun and Kaneshiro. You have to watch quite a bit to differentiate btw what's going on, btw the musical and their past love relationship.

Just curious to know, would you pay to see a movie if it's not made on a big budget, but has a good plot and great acting, thought the actors are not well-known?

I guess I would, if I have enough money to see the movie at the time.
