The Ding Lik character, as originally conceived, was someone who, after he reached a degree of maturity, could prove to be a credible rival to Hui Mun Keung. Therefore, any actor cast to play the role of Ding Lik must be second in suaveness and charisma *only* to the actor who plays Hui Mun Keung.

you mean actually the one who will play Ding Li's character should be the one who can compared with Hui Mun Keung in looks and charisma??
but in this 2006 version, I think huang hai bo definately can not compared with huang xiao ming in terms of look and charisma at all
i mean "the different look and charisma" between them is too deep for me
i think in the 80s ray lui's a better credible rival to chow

Exactly. The actor portraying Ding Lik in the latest version is horribly miscast, and is the weakest link in terms of casting in the new series.

yeah agree ... I think I have the same opinion with others that this 2006 version of Ding Li kinda looks "stupid" and too naive, I almost ffw every single scene he's in it sorry .. but for me his character's a liitle bit annoying

Here are a few screencaps from the original, 1980 TVB THE BUND series...especially for the benefit of younger viewers who might not have seen the original so they can compare the old cast to the current one.

First, Chow Yun Fat as the original Hui Mun Keung:

Do you mean the Fung Ching Ching character, or the actress Angie Chiu who portrayed her?

Well, according to her profile, Angie Chiu was born on November 15, 1954. That means she was nineteen years old when she first came into the public sphere as a Miss Hong Kong contestant in 1973. The BUND was released in 1980, so she was around twenty-six or twenty-seven years old.

The character of Fung Ching Ching was a few years younger than that, being a new high school graduate (eighteen years old, most likely) at the beginning of THE BUND.

I think with the costume and everything, Huang Xiao Ming does remind me of the young Chow Yun Fat. Whatever he's hot either way.

    Ken Cheng,

If Ching Ching is about 18-19 years old, how old is Hui Man Keung and Ding Lik
    suppose to be?

I don't think the ages were specified, but Hui Mun Keung was in his mid twenties. I estimate that he was probably twenty-four when the series began. Ding Lik was probably two to three years younger.

Huang Xiao Ming doesn't embarrass himself as Hui Mun Keung, but Chow Yun Fat's original is very difficult to beat. Still, Huang should get credit for holding his own in the role. As I said: he doesn't embarrass himself.

Costume: my favorite Hui Mun Keung costume from the original BUND is the three-piece suit with bowtie look that Hui wore when he worked as Fung Ging Yiu's right-hand man. Of all the suits that Hui Mun Keung wore during the series, I thought that one was the best. I always wanted to get a suit like that...with the bowtie, especially.

Subsequent versions of Hui Mun Keung (i.e. the Sunny Chan, Leslie Cheung, and Huang Xiao Ming versions) have all dispensed with the bowtie look, which is a shame. It was very distinctive...a kind of FDR/Winston Churchill style.
