Do you like jrock? If you do, I would recommend Glay and B'z, these two bands produce fantastic jrock stuff that's not too harsh on the ears. Some of my favorite songs from them would be I'm in love , Beloved, White Road , However and Winter, Again (Glay), Gold and Arigato B'z).

I would recommend Orange Range too, but since you said not too rappish, I guess you wouldn't like them alot as their brand of music is basically a fusion of rock, rap and pop.

For jpop songs... I listen to random Johnny Entertainment boybands, most of the songs are pretty genki, and I think out of the bunch, KinKi Kids and Kanjani8 have the best songs. Female pop singers, Utada Hikaru and Otsuka Ai has some great songs, and up and coming folks like YUI, Yuna Ito are pretty good as well.

Recent influx of Japanese talk shows rekindled my love for Jpop.

    Yui, singer/songwriter, Jpop/Jrock.
I absolutely love her ballad Tokyo. But she's probably famous for her single Life, which was used as a theme song for the anime Bleach.

Morning Musume, idol girl group, bubblegum pop.
Boy bands and girl groups were really popular a few years back. Now the fad isn't as intense but these people are still around. Their second latest single Sexy Boy is pretty good if you like this genre, or just like looking at kawaii girls in general...

As for B'z, I don't know much about them, but they sang the theme song to the Jdrama Beautiful Life, which I like a lot.

L'Arc~en~Ciel, Porno Graffitti (newer work is disappointing though), Judy and Mary (some of YUKI's solo work is quite good too, although your mileage may vary), Garnet Crow, the brilliant green
