The Gu Long characters Luk Siu Fung and Chor Lau Heung are very similar to each other in many ways. Both are devil-may-care fellows who love adventure, friendship, and women (not necessarily in that order). They are both excellent martial artists, particularly in the field of hing gung, and both enjoy getting into the thick of wulin mysteries and conspiracies. They each also have a set of interesting and highly skilled friends.
Let's stack those friends up against each other by similar characterisitcs. Names on the left are from the LUK SIU FUNG stories and names on the right are from the CHOR LAU HEUNG stories:
Fa Mun Lau vs. Wu Teet Fa: In addition both having "Fa" as part of their names, these two fellows are known for being constant companions of the two title heroes. More than Luk Siu Fung and Chor Lau Heung's other friends, Fa Mun Lau and Wu Teet Fa accompany the title heroes on most of their adventures. Their fighting skills are excellent, but somewhat short of the title heroes'. Of the two, however, it seems that Fa Mun Lau is the better fighter. Wu Teet Fa was beaten from time to time; Fa Mun Lau didn't lose any fights until very late in the stories, and that was only to opponents who could also easily defeat Luk Siu Fung.
Sai Mun Chui Sheut vs. Central Plains 1 Dim Hung: The cold, deadly swordsmen. 1 Dim Hung was a very good swordsman, but Sai Mun Chui Sheut had him way, way outclassed. This one isn't even close.
The Honest Monk vs. No Flowers Monk: It's hard to say which one was the better fighter, although I lean towards the No Flowers Monk because he was among Shaolin's best in CHOR LAU HEUNG, and could give Chor Lau Heung himself a run for his money. The Honest Monk remained honest and loyal to the end, but No Flowers Monk betrayed Chor Lau Heung.
Interestingly, there was no corresponding CHOR LAU HEUNG character for the thief king See Hung Jak Sing in LUK SIU FUNG because, after all, Chor Lau Heung was the thief king in his own stories.
