I think the death of Yue Buqun in XAJH would count as both a Hail Mary and 'choke job'.

The Hail Mary: Yilin just happens to walk up behind him at precisely the right moment to unintentionally kill him and save Linghu Chong's life.

The "choke job": Yue Buqun has just accomplished his plan to eliminate most of his enemies and rivals in one fell swoop and is preparing to exact his revenge on his wayward former disciple, when the person who is least likely to kill him under any other circumstances walks up behind him and runs him through without even trying.
