Default The Yellow Eyebrowed Monk - originally from Shaolin?

The Yellow Eyebrowed Monk from DGSD was famed for using the Mighty Gum Gwong (i.e. Vajra) Finger. During the time of DGSD, he was considered the supreme practitioner of this particular skill.

The Mighty Gum Gwong Finger, however, was a Shaolin martial art (and as such, was featured much more prominently in HSDS). The Yellow-Eyebrowed Monk did not belong to the Shaolin Temple, but a monastery known as the Nim Wa Temple within the Dali Kingdom.

Did the Yellow-Eyebrowed Monk originally train at Shaolin, however? If not, how did he manage to learn one of Shaolin's most famous skills?

When in doubt about DGSD, go to Wuxiapedia.

The Finger of Buddha's Warrior Attendant that the Yellow-Browed Monk learnt was an original technique that came directly from the Lower Dharma Hall of Putian in Fujian 福建蒲田达摩下院. He had achieved 26-27% of the full strength of the technique at most at the point of his encounter with the teenaged boy (Chapter 9).

Interesting information, but how do we reconcile this with the idea that Mighty Gum Gwong Finger is generally associated with the Shaolin Temple?

Yellow Eyebrowed Monk's skill was called Diamond Finger (Gum Gwong Ji). That's a rather generic name, I don't think it's Shaolin brand specific.

Just like how Xie Yanke from Ode to Gallantry used a skill called "Divine Flick" identical to Wong Yerk See's skill. But there's probably no connection between the 2 skills other than the name coincidence.

In this day and age, Shaolin would be naming the Yellow Eyebrowed Monk in court for copyright infringement.

Wonder how the Yellow Eyebrowed Monk's version of Gum Gwong Finger would match up against the Shaolin version? The way the Yellow Eyebrowed Monk used it in DGSD made it a single-finger skill similar to 1 Yeung Finger Technique; in HSDS, the Shaolin Gum Gwong Finger practitioners seemed to use it more like a claw technique.

Huangmei's finger skill was on par with Duan Zhengming's Yiyang Finger (as evidenced by their "friendly test"). But in terms of internal energy, he was slightly inferior to Duan Zhengming/Duan Yanqing. He seemed more enlightened than Duan Zhengming. Overall, I think Jin Yong wanted Huangmei's version to be more or less on par with Shaolin's version.

Ah, my PM inbox is full. So, Huangmei is from Shaolin after all? Was there any difference between South Shaolin and North Shaolin other than geographics during DGSD?

    Thanks pal.

I've heard of northern and southern Shaolin too, but I thought the split didn't happen until much later...the late Ming or early Qing era.

ya it was talked about in HSDS a lot..apparently the south shaolin wasn't being supported and they eventually broke up.. but it was said their skills was unorthodox and focused more on the yin side.. (could be totally off)

actually it was southern and westren shaolin that occured during the first huashan tournament before LOCH. but there were actually several temples that had martial arts links to shaolin all over wulin, evidentally snce the tang dynasty, many monks and layman had went to shaolin to learn martial arts had had set up branches all over chnia, that is one of the reason's shaolin dominates wulin, because it has the greatest number of branches and students all over china. quezhen had over thirty thousand disiples in all it's braches just within 100 yrs of it's founding. imaging how many shaolin had. dali was also in the south and in the path which damo travelled before coming to shaolin or something. yellow browed monk was in a branch temple of shaolin in dali, not a branch temple of four dragons temple. so he learnt shaolin skills, he actually learnt them in shaolin temple before becoming a monk(after his near death defeat by MRB) in dali later.
