Add Alienware, it's the best.
I wish that I could build one myself, but I'm too chicken to try. I do choose all my components though and have it assembled in store. That way, if something doesn't work, the store will take care of ordering another piece. I have never bought a brand name computer before and will continue to do so unless I go for a laptop. In that case, I'd probably go with Toshiba.
As for Toshiba laptop, I had been using this for about 3 years now, so its really out dated. But, the interior is still good, expect have to deal with crashing/freezing problems; Something we all hoping not to have to face. Anyways, if I was not planning to sing, then I don't care, as much. Due to I am, it really sux, so I try to save the files, ASAP.
At times, it does not load and have to wait awhile. Then, at times its kinda quick.

Sony Viaos are the best!
Compaq, Dell, HP, and etc are nothing compared to Viaos. Just love my Viao.
I think it's something about branding. Alienware is popular to a certain crowd so Dell might want to keep that crowd because like you, some people don't know that Dell bought Alienware. Those who believe in Dell and want a gaming rig might be more incline to consider the XPS line. Here in Canada, Best Buy owns Future Shop and both stores are exactly the same, yet there's still two brands and sometime, both stores are in the same shopping centre.

My work provided laptop is a HP and it seems alright.
But for desktop PC's I reckon branded PC's are a waste of money except maybe DELL.
If you bought the components and assembled the PC yourself, you'd save about 20%+ of the cost but then you have to deal with the hassles of sending components to manufacturers if parts fail under warranty instead of sending it to a vendor (such as DELL) and let them handle all that stuff.
ASUS the Taiwanese brand for awesome specs + cheap prices along with a crap LCD monitor that is cmos like my ASUS A8Js which has a very average screen but excellent spec's for its range of mid-high end laptops....
But seriously the light leakage is terrible on this machine.
