I'm writing a paper about Jin Yong and what makes him special as a writer. So far I have: the novels' "Chineseness" and his great storytelling.
Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Yes. Go and read up on Jin Yong, and analyse some of his more famous novels. You need more content than what you have come up with if the paper is going to work out.
Although the novels' roles are fictional, everyone likes admired heros.
Everybody likes having just and brave roles.
Jin Youg interprets the roles very well.
When the novels are transformed into Taiwanese series, everyone can see their heros that are acted on the TV.
And everyone's imagination can compare with actors acted on the TV.
It is interesting when reading Jin Youg's novels.
JIN YONg is a great wuxia writer in chinese world.
some says that he has written ten thousand of words.
his fiction work are so popular and had been performed into movies
and seriese.
one of the special point is the names of the characters.
these names are so creative and connected to the person's personality.
I think his imagination makes him and his novels special.
People enjoy the content very much because something doesn't and never happen in real world.
So, I think that his imagination and creativity make him special.
I think Jin Young is a very famous Wuxia novelist in Chinese. What makes him special is his fresh and full of imagination fictions. Some directors even use his novel to make a TV series show or movie. Maybe he is the first person who has the talent to publish such a good Wuxia series novels. So this is why he is very special.
I think he created a new style of Wuxia Fiction. He used his own words to write in his works. He writed a lot of Wuxia Fiction books that most of them were have relations in novels. When you read his novels you will join the storys completely. He described the situation of fighting was very clearly. So, you could't stop to read it. In his books, you could see a lot of names in his novels. Those names were beautiful and unique. His story was attractive for people who like reading fiction. I also like his novels.
His story is Movie like.
The way the story flows is very intersting.
Very unlike old school WuXia story.
But personally, I like LYS' and WoLong Sheng's stories more.

Wow, 5 people made their first post on this thread.
Jin Yong is special because of his well developed, realistic characters. Everyone, including the bad guys, has motives for everything they did.
JY because of his characters, and historical fiction, makes it entertaining to read, plus the antagonist are evil not because of evil's sake. and there's no real good or evil in his works, but honestly, straight forward brotherhood vs phony, 2 faced people
he's my favorite author so far because he's a chinese author who, unlike modern chinese authors today (ni kuan for copying sherlock holmes, or westernized crap, like the chinese reader's digest). he maintains a very chinese style with ancient chinese settings, ancient languages, his writing are not assimilated by western writings at all

And what is is the need for that? why spam here.. lol go on wuxia game or poll or something

why JY is so great?
1) MOST of his characters have back stories, they are not just good for the sake of being good, and evil because his book's need a villan. The history of the characters decide good and evil rather than a random person coming and killing everybody, thers a story.
2) Classic romance. Yes it can get complicated, very very very complicated, but the basis of man and woman is there and most ppl, no matter how much us men deny it, DO want to read about that.
3) Connections, to both history and his other books. He uses names that are fimiliar to anyone who passed 5th grade asian history giving us a sense of belonging. Also his books make nice time shifts that give us enough for us to be able to connect one book to another (e.g. yang guo in ROTCH to the misterious character in final of the triology, and from TL8B to the condor series)
4) Chivalry, the 'code' of wuxia is lost in the modern world and such unspoken laws is unheard of in our present time, a return to it seems almost mystical to most readers.
5) Humour, not overplayed like in other books, but also not nonexistent. A very subtle (sometimes) humour.
6) the characters, i dont know, people just have a habit of falling in love with his characters. when something happens to them you actually CARE! you actually feel sad when someone dies, because JY makes it easy for you to connect to his characters, This is rare in modern books
7) Twists, the classical cliched hackneyed twists are not used, JY uses original twists in his stories
Jin Yong's plots are REALLY unique. For example, in ROCH, he could have made the story about:
1) the two separated cousins Lu Wu Shuang and Cheng Ying (this plot is SO cliche!--two kids/twins, separated in childhood, meet later...etc. )
2) Guo Jing and Huang Rong's kid--very very typical....
.......etc.
But instead, he chose to write about the DEAD guy from LOCH (Yang Kang)'s son, Yang Guo. Shows how creative he is....

Also, you have to consider all the work he puts in researching accupoints, wushu movies, ect
