    Default Favorite cities

What are the "best" (large) cities you've ever traveled to, and why do you like them?

    For me, they are:

    1. Boston - backed by rich history (arguably the birthplace of USA?), splendid architecture, cultural diversity, and a grand waterfront -- all within walking proximity, Boston is definitely a special place for me.

    2. Amsterdam - enjoy the freedom to live life to the fullest

    3. Miami - the sizzling glamour is unforgettable

    4. San Francisco - East meets West in this beautiful nature-plenty metropolitan.

    5. Shanghai, China - Best night life I ever had.

I absolutely love Nurnberg, Germany. That city was just amazing! It was a beautiful mixture of ancient architecture along with the more modernized techniques now. Also the city was just so nice and fun. Everyone seemed cheerful and you could expect to find some yummy food! That was my first experience/city that I visited when I went to Germany so it left a really good impression on me!

I think I like going to Montreal and Toronto, Canada. I was only there for like a week but the people there and atmosphere there was so much different from the States. And the view from high places was really nice. I think it was in Montreal where we hiked up this hill and could see the city from up top there. Very pretty. Too bad I didn't have digital camera then, I could've taken a lot of nice photos. Oh and the fruits that you can eat there lychee and other fruits, I forgot how to spell.

Oh yeah, and I even got to see Niagra Falls and how they lit Niagra Falls with different color lights at night. It was amazing.

I'll post more about other cities later.

    1. Venice - This was such an unique city. I love the scenery of the canals connecting to the alleyways of the city. It is always packed with people too.

    2. Melbourne - I have been in Australia from eight years and my favorite city has to be Melbourne. I am living in Sydney and I found it so much like every other major city in the world. Melbourne is so much cleaner, greener and fresher.

    3. Tianjin, China - I love my birthplace. It has some of China's best food. And everything is so bloody cheap.

    4. Boulder, Colorado - I know, I know, it is not a big city, but it is seriously only an hour drive from Denver. Mind you, I love the Denver museum and zoo, but Boulder has something that I couldn't find in any other place in America. Five years of living there and I love the place to death. Boulder is cultural and has a very warm family feeling to it. Plus, it has one of the best library buildings I have ever seen.

    5. Amsterdam - This was definitely an unique city. The only city in the world where you can look at the girls before going in. The Red Light District is definitely for window shoppers. Plus, I really wanted to go to the museum there too.

i know! i believe oakland has either one of the highest homocide rate or crime rate. even driving through the streets (esp at night) is a horror.

san francisco is a much prettier city of visit than los angeles.

if you like beaches or surfing, you should go to hawaii

I've not travelled much in recent years, but here are some of the cities I visited between 1997 and 2003 (comments based on the year of visit):

Istanbul, Turkey (2000) - a very interesting city for those who have time to explore its nooks and crannies; those who like exotic flavours (and don't mind the oil) will enjoy the food.

Bangkok, Thailand (last visited 2002) - good city for short 3- or 4-day visits; plus-points for those who like shopping and Thai food.

Cape Town, South Africa (1998) - safety (especially at night) was an issue when I was there; Cape Point and surrounding areas are really beautiful.

Wuhan, China (2002) - quite interesting for those who want some metropolitan sights without the over-excited hustle-and-bustle of Shanghai; those who enjoy historical trivia will enjoy visiting its museums, old buildings, etc. Imagine Yu Lianzhou sailing up the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) with Zhang Cuishan, Yin Susu and little Wuji en route to Wudang! That river is HUGE!

Lanzhou, China (2002) - the outskirts (bare desert-like areas with caves, etc) are more interesting than the city itself, but because I was there in the middle of winter, it got dark too quickly for such exploration. Lots of minority groups and costumes to watch out for, and exotic foods to eat. Mutton/lamb and noodles are staples. Wuxia fans who have read the Book/Sword and watched the 2001 adaptation with Zhao Wenzhuo will enjoy the outskirts and cultural references.

New Delhi, India (2002) - wish I had more time beyond the meetings that I had to attend, so that I could see more of the city.

So ... notice something? I tend to end up in places whose languages I can't quite speak (except for Wuhan and Lanzhou), and whose inhabitants make me stick out like a sore thumb!

Giving my two cents of other cities I have visited during my travels and some comments.

NYC - I don't like big cities, I think they get too crowded and then I can't breath. But I did love the museums there.

LA - Again, not a big fan of big cities. However, I thought Disneyland was pretty cool, especially with the fireworks and the laser show at night.

Washington DC - So many museums, but I don't remember that much of the place.

Las Vegas - I love the neon lights in the city. Unfortunately, I was too young to gamble then.

Yellowstone National Park - Technically not a city, but this was one of the most fascinating places I have been to.

(I have visited so many places in America that I don't remember most of them.)

Beijing - Too big of a city for me and too clustered together. But I love the cultural heritage that it has preserved over the years.

Shanghai - the only thing I remember about Shanghai was going to the zoo there.

Sydney - I have mixed feelings about this place, even though I live here. I love the food, but the transport system sucks.

London - I quite like London for the cultural side of things like the Tower of London. But it was quite cold and wet there during winter.

Paris - I love all the major attractions of Paris, especially the Louvre, but more importantly, they have wonderful food there.

Rome - I had a fascination with Rome because of its ancient ruins that blends in with the city. My favourite was Trevi Fountain at night. A magnificent view.

Florence - I don't remember much of Florence as it quite small compared to Rome. I did buy leather products from there.

Vienna - Vienna was just like Rome, except not as ancient as Rome. There wasn't that much interesting things in Vienna from my point of view. A more of a historical city.

Salzburg - This was such a quiet place. They filmed Sound of Music there so that was a plus. I think it would be a quite nice place to live.

Brussels - They have ice cream on waffles! The best cold/hot food combination, especially during winter time.

Bern - I always loved Switzerland and the Alps. Their chocolate is just divine.

Munich - We stopped for a while here but it seemed too quiet for a big German city.

Canberra - I don't know why everyone bad-mouth Canberra. I stayed there during my uni years and I came to love the city. It is small but homely. The people there are so nice to you too.

Lan Zhou rocks! Haha, only because it's my hometown...well actually not really. It's just where I was born lol, but I do have family there. I'm surprised people even know about it. Whenever people ask me where I'm from, I give a very long response because I don't know where to say I'm technically from. But yeah, LanZHou has HORRIBLE HORRIBLE atmosphere. It was once voted as the #1 polluted city in the world. What a great legend to attach to my city of birth. Oh and the fact that the freako Yang Li Juan is from there too...how wonderful.

You actually like T.o.? I admit I'm biased, having lived here for over 10 years, but I find it a lot uglier than some of the other metropolitan cities, like Shanghai. For example, their tower is so much prettier and glamorous than the CN tower. I don't get the hype about the CN tower at all. Montreal is known as party town, and I like it to visit, but definitely wouldn't live there on a long-term basis.

For me, I'm supposed to be studying now, so I'll reply in detail later, but these are the cities I LOOOOOOOOOVE:

    1) Las Vegas! Not to live, but a hell of a vacation and night life. I don't think it's beatable.

    2) San Francisco ~ just so pretty and the Golden Gate bridge is too pretty not to love.

    3) San Diego ~ I like it even better than San Francisco, definitely planning on moving there in the future if I can afford it.

    4) Shen Zhen ~ little HK, but without all the busyness and clutter. Tons of cool tourist attractions.

Yeah, that's about it for now. I want to put places like Rome, Paris, but too bad I've never been there.

Hello, 兰州人! You speak 兰州话? I had a hard time trying to figure out what some of the people were saying because they spoke 兰州话! Good thing I had some friends who spoke Putonghua and/or English to help out!

When I was there in 2002, it hadn't snowed in Lanzhou for 10 years, according to the locals. Apparently, there was a saying there along the lines "friends bring rain" or something to that effect, so we really had a surprise when it snowed the night I arrived in Lanzhou! Also, I got chased down the street by a toothless old lady who was selling steamed sweet potatoes because I took her picture! Obviously, buying some of her sweet potatoes was not considered sufficient compensation for her photo!

Too bad about the pollution and Yang Lijuan. I didn't mind the pollution (maybe because it snowed quite thickly and everything was blanketed in white), but my friends in Lanzhou told me that the air was better (less polluted) during the warmer months.

i'm about to visit one of my favorite cities in a week. Las Vegas! woot!

it's not just the gambling and the nightlife, but the city alway seems so vibrant and there's so much to do. i've always been a night person, and this city seriously doesn't sleep. there's art exhibitions, great dining, relax poolside, awesome shows (X and G rated), tons of shopping, etc. one of my favorite experiences was riding a horse through the desert. it was smelly, but fun!

Haha, nope I can't speak it. I don't think anyone in my family can really speak it either, though they may be able to understand it. It hasn't snowed in 10 years? haha I still have baby pictures of me in snow with hoodies and everything. Well that was definitely 10 years ago lol. It is quite dry, which is why they call it the "Great West". The food is SO awesome there, I loved the shiskabob thingeys yum yum *I'm drooling as I type*. Awww, you're making me homesick. I wanna go back, haven't been back in almost 8 years.

VEGAS! So lucky...I loved Vegas so much, but I'm not rich enough to truly experience the lifestyle. When I make a lot of money someday, I'm going to go back and live it up. (ha if that day will ever come). Maybe I'll get married there *dreamy* --though I heard if you get married there, it's only legal in Las Vegas lmao. Good for Britney-style weddings I guess.

I want to go back to Lanzhou too, to visit and explore the desert areas. They look so interesting from the air as I flew over it, and looked even more interesting close-up when I was driven past it from the airport into the city. As for the food, I prefer the lamb/mutton hotpot, where the meat is sliced so thin it simply melts in the mouth! And those huge bowls of noodles in soup and chilli oil! There's this tiny shop opposite Lanzhou University that serves these noodles for an unbelievably cheap price!
