My stab at the answer. Mr. Smith couldn't find anything to eat. In the end, Mr. Smith took off one of his slippers and ate it in desperation. He died (food poisoning or indigestion?) and landed on the floor. The other slipper was found near him.

Mr and Mrs Smith lived in a big house. One night, Mr Smith got hungry, and went downstairs for a midnight snack. Since he did this often, Mrs Smith found nothing wrong with it...until he didn't come back by dawn. Worried, Mrs Smith went downstairs, and found her husband dead. The only thing nearby was a slipper. What happened to Mr Smith?

Mr and Mrs Smith are cockroaches. Mr Smith went downstairs to get some food and a human occupant of the house killed him with a slipper.
