Default Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

    Official site

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaborate for the 7th time in this musical/crime thriller. The A-list cast includes Depp as the vengeful butcher barber Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as the human pie maker Mrs. Lovett, and Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin. Sacha Baron Cohen (of Borat fame) has a role in here too, but hopefully that won't be a downside. This film has already been nominated for 4 Golden Globes (Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director).

I watched the 2006 BBC adaptation recently and found the story pretty intriguing. With Johnny as the star of this film, I'm definitely going to check it out. It opens nationwide tomorrow.

I saw this last week and really enjoyed it. The storyline is fast-paced and makes more sense than the BBC adaptation where it wasn't very clear why Todd sought revenge or did what he did. Strong performances by the entire cast, especially Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp. Even Sacha was tolerable. The fact that most of the cast aren't professional singers wasn't a set-back at all. It's bloody bloody, though. I watched an interview where Johnny mentioned that buckets of "blood" had to be mixed and made to taste sweet because it would splatter everywhere, including down people's throats.

Thanks for the review Lady Zhuge!
You're getting me even more excited. A strong performance you say, not shocking at all considering Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are both superb actors. I can't wait to hear them sing too hahahaha!

i heard that this time will be the first that johnny depp is singing in a live action film. does this mean it wasn't his own voice in crybaby?

Congrats to Johnny on winning his first Golden Globe!!! I really wanted to hear his acceptance speech, but of all the years for the Golden Globes to be canceled. This movie also won Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category.

Just watch this in the cinema yesterday. Most gory musical I've ever seen. All the blood and the throat cutting. I've never seen a musical like this. Some of the scenes are pretty disturbing too. The most disturbing for me is
    click to show/hide spoilers
Judge Turpin sentencing a child to death for a made up crime.
What is even more disturbing is the guy sitting next to me actually laughed at that scene.

The movie is good and the acting is good. But the singing is only average. I think the best voice is the guy playing Anthony. Johnny Depp can definitely sing and very good for someone who has not sing before. But, his singing voice is not that great. His acting is amazing as usual. Both Helena Bonham Carter and the girl who play Johanna, their voice are too squeaky and high pitch for me, although Helena's acting is good.

I notice there are many Harry Potter casts in this movie. Snape, Wormtail, Bellatrix.

Aww just go for it, ghostie! It's a good movie!

I've always suspected there's something about the beggar woman... There was this scene when she kept uttering about the evil chimney smoke and her face was revealed for like a split second. By then I was 90% sure she was Lucy, and I was proven right later on, when she burst into Todd's shop.

I feel so bad for Lucy. The scene when she got killed was sad too. One could only imagine the horror Todd experienced when he realised he had killed his most beloved Lucy.

And he almost killed Johanna too!

Poor Johanna... she's going to be so emotionally scarred...

I think people should just try to at least appreciate it for its artisitic nature. I love musicals and we are lacking it in today's movie industry so...embrace it!

Anyway, loved the movie, and agreed, I

feel terrible for all those unintentionally involved. This movie is definately a tragedy (very Shakespeare-like).

It was, however, alot darker than I expected!

    The part where
    click to show/hide spoilers
Sweeney and Mrs Lovette sing about which person should be made into meat pies (the way they discuss it so lightheartedly. :shudders: )
    is also very disturbing.

I do appreciate it for its artistry and uniqueness. It's not everyday we see such a disturbing and gory musical.

The blood and gore exceeded my expectation. But the blood looked faked and too bright, so it wasn't that bad. I did closed my eyes several times though .

I've never cried after watching a musical before, but the ending got me teary-eyed. It was just so sad what happened to Lucy. And the devastating look on Johnny's face (such a good actor) + the words he sang...

Way too much singing, but I really like the plot though.

I love the song; and was delighted by the show. ^o^ well; I burst into laughter at the cinema a few times; was it that disturbing?

Its just so utterly amusing; and I love how it ends.

No idea. I've only watched a portion of Corpse Bride, a movie that bores me half dead.

Let's just say Sweeney Todd is made of more singing than actual speaking...so if you don't like song then..............
