FWIW, I had posted about my laptop in the past.

    DELL (Bah!)
    XPS M 1730
    Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.8G
RAM 4 G (Rated only as 5.0 on the Vista scale- the slowest component in the system!)
    HDD 250G x 2
    Physics accelerator
    NVDIA GeForce 8700
    Matsushita BlueRay DVD r/r
    Intel Wireless Adaptor, Blueetooth.
    Sigma Tel HD Audio
Windows Vista - Feels like a freaking retard, hangs once a day.

Feels damn heavy, and when i change over in 2-3 years time, i will settle for portability instead of the chunk of heavy metal.

Looking at that....I would honestly hate to change my OS to Win Vista.

what did you expect when you bought the desktop-replacement laptop?

users must understand the compromise for choosing a desktop-replacement laptop.

Ok, I have finally build my very first PC. Knowing where to put the components was easy, but it's the physical installation that was a real pain. The hardest part was pushing the four pins of the heatsink to the motherboard; whoever thought of the mechanism must like torture. Anyway, here are the final specs of my new rig:

There must be something wrong because that's not normal obviously. Did you update to Vista or did your PC came with Vista pre-installed? Is your version 32-bit or 64-bit?

WOW - super power: 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 1.6 TB HD, 2 DVD Writer, HD 24 Inch Monitor - Wicked!

That HD can store my downloading for a year - and no DVD ISO burning

So, how much it cost you, sure lots and lots of dollars

It's actually 8GB RAM. The OCZ model PC2-6400 Platinum is by definition dual channel 2GB x 2 = 4GB. I have that x2, so 8 in total. Overkill you might say, but I say not for the Ultimate 64-bit. It runs super smooth... for now.

Needless to say, I spent a considerate amount of dough for that rig, but I've always done that for all my PCs, even the very first one that my parents bought for me. This time, I built it myself to add more with less cost. It would have been much more expensive if I went the retail route. Oh and I never buy branded PCs like Dell or HP; I just like choosing all the components separately.

8 GB RAM - WOWWWW , is that supported by previous version of Windows (XP, 2000)?

So VISTA can support 8 GB now or is it more than that?

You need a 64-bit OS for 4 GB and more support. Windows XP 64-bit supports up to 128 GB, but not the 32-bit and neither are the Vista 32-bit editions.

    Vista 64-bit memory support:

    Home Basic - 8 GB
    Home Premium - 16 GB
    Ultimate - 128+ GB
    Business - 128+ GB
    Enterprise - 128+ GB

Considering that Vista was "built to last", 128 GB will be the norm in five years.

Hehehe, for all we know, Microsoft software development already starting developing their next "built-to-last" superb OS.

From what I heard, according to Bill Gates, Microsoft's next OS will be out in 2010, that's only two years from now.

    Default Alright then... beat THIS!

Processor: Pentium 4 CPU 1.5 GHz
    Memory: 256 Mb DDR
GPU: NVidia GeForce 4400 MX, 64 Mb
    Hard disk: 80 Gb
    OS: MS Windows XP SP2

Now see if you can beat THAT in terms of antiquity! This PC of mine was bought about, let's see.... 6-7 years ago? It received almost no upgrades.

Would like to upgrade, but... nah! Just gonna buy a new rig. The sum of money I need for upgrading would almost be the same like buying a new one, anyway.

How's this thing running? Are you overclocking it? Rampage Forumla seems a little excessive if you're not. I was close to building a q9450 a few days ago but became distracted by all of the OC discussions...

btw: What are running on this machine? It seems to be geared towards video or image editing as opposed to gaming.

    Currently still running:

    Athlon64x2 3800+
    Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 MB
    2 gig DDR400
    250 gb SATA2 HD
    200 gb IDE HD
8800gts 320mb (upgraded from a 6800gt right before the 8800 gt was released)
    Antec Sonata 2 case
    WinXP sp2
HK47: Now do you understand the travails of my existence master? Surely it does not compare to your existence but still...
    You: I survive somehow
HK47: As do I. It is our lot in life I suppose master. Shall we find something to kill to cheer ourselves up?

I found out that I could get an 8-Way Opteron for a similar price as some of the overpriced 'desktop' processors.

Keep in mind, I originally belt the rig for server purposes (and a lot of it came directly from the distributer for a reduced rate), but ended up getting a new case, slapping two graphics cards in it, getting water cooling, and then going with it. It certainly delivers awesome performance.

    CPU: Quad-Core AMD Opteron 8354
    Memory: 4x2GB Corsair Dominator
Hard Drives: 2x147GB 15k SAS drive (RAID-0 -- used to be RAID-1 for redundancy)
Video Cards: 2xGeForce GTX 280 SLI

    Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Honestly, out of the whole machine, I have to say the 15k SAS drives are the best. Truly much, much better drive and seek speeds that make the machine really go.
