    Default Washington DC

Hi, I will be in DC soon. I was wondering how is the public transportation. We'd like to visit museums, many restaurants probably scattered throughout the city, and see the fireworks on July 4. Can we get around easily with public transportation? We're considering taking a train from the Carolina.

    Any tips would be helpful.

Most people in the Northern Virginia, D.C. and Maryland area use the Metrorail (subway) and Metro buses to get around for work without having to drive and waste gas for daily trips to the office and etc. For buses you have to purchase a smart-trip card because they no longer use cash to pay for fare.

If you want to visit museums like the National Gallery of Art, the Sackler? gallery, Spy Museum, Crime and Punishment Museum, U.S. Memorial Holocaust museum, Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, U.S. History Museum and all, you'll be better off with taking public transportation with metrorail. If you rent a car and park in D.C., it's very hard to find a parking space and you'd have to come back to pay the parking meter every two hours or so. Most people prefer the metrorail.

For the fireworks on July fourth, I suggest you come there before 5pm or nightfall and claim a good spot before everyone does. Bring a tarp mat or big bedsheet or something to sit on and pack a meal or buy some food outside of D.C. Food in D.C. can be pricey. People often come early to secure good seats to see the fireworks, and it gets pretty crowded.

Georgetown has some good shopping, dining, movies, and nightlife.

Suet Seung has covered things very well. I would definitely use metrorail. A ride all day Metro pass is available for $5 on weekends and after 9:30 a.m. on weekdays.
