Default Pics: Unforgetable beauties in old movies (ancient costume)

There's a wave of Chollywood fetish going on right now featuring sexy girl Zhang Zi Yi and the like. But you know what, we have done better than that in the old days! See the evidence here!

Our first featured beauty is Ms. Sharla Cheung Man, red hot in the 90s in major movies along major movie stars. A sharp beauty coupled with concrete acting, she is indeed unforgetable.

Her performance as Zhao Min in the HSDS movie costarring Jet Li as Zhang Wu Ji: goodness, isn't she perfect for the role!

Ah, I absolutely LOVED Cheung Man's Zhao Min. She was so assured and feisty, with class. She's in control. Love it!

Thanks for the pics, Shen. Lovely actresses they are.

Continuing with our feature, we usually think Stephen Chow along with Sharla right? Well, think Jinyong too, because she played quite a number of his characters, in addition to Zhao Min!

    Which ones? You'd ask.

Ah yes, SWORD STAINED WITH ROYAL BLOOD - another of my favorite 90s/new wave wuxia films. Now that I'm actually reading the book, I have to watch the movie again to see who played which characters.

Sharla was indeed a very credible actress. She looked so compatible with Stephen Chow. I always wondered if they had dated in real life. Their chemistry onscreen was smokin hot. I thought she looked her best in ancient costumes. The modern 80s hairstyle and clothes don't look all that flattering, IMO.

Another favorite actress of mine is Chingmy Yau. Talk about utilizing her sex appeal . She was adorable as Xiao Zhao in the Jet Li version. If only they had made part 2. What ever happened? They just stopped the story all of a sudden.

A sequel was planned. However they never made it because part 1 wasn't as successful as they expected.

    That's what I heard, anyway.

I wonder how badly the movie did at the box office then. I thought for entertainment purposes, it did the job. I would have paid if only for the eye candy and comedic moments. Jet Li's Hollywood movies suck and he still continues to make more, but I wish he wouldn't

Part II of HSDS starring Jet Li was filmed partially but not edited. With the poor release of part 1, the production team closed down and abandoned the project. Many fans have requested for the release of part 2, but the filming that they did do wouldn't be enough for a movie and ending.

Wow! Good old memories! Thanks for the lovely pictures of Cheung Man! I like most of her movies, be it modern times or ancient. Oh, and not to forgot, she has very good chemistry with Stephen Chow as she plays his love interest lol. i.e. Gods of Gamblers II, and its sequels.

I like Barbara Yung's version of teenage Huang Rong, with Felix Wong.

Anyone remember her? When Expression mentioned the movie Crazy Flying Daggers, I thought of her. Gloria Yip Wan Yee - She's so cute! And her cute cute Ashura in The Peacock King.

Our next featured beauty is Ms. Joey Wong, deemed the Ancient Goddess. It is NOT difficult to see why. Since her soar to fame with her role as Xiao Qian in A Chinese Ghost Story, she has taken on many similar, albeit beautiful ancient roles in the 90s. Her roles were not as diverse as Sharla's, but definitely classic and unforgetable.

Madame White Snake in the movie Green Snake, one of her juicier roles that clearly demonstrates she is a beauty who can also act.

Apparently you can keep your clothes on and still look sexy:

    With Green Snake Maggie Cheung:

    Great minds do think alike

Thanks for sharing all the beautiful pics, expression. Joey and Maggie were simply dazzling as the snakes. I can't think of any current young actresses nowadays that can compare to the leading actresses in the late 80's and early 90's. They dominated the box offices with not just their looks, but their acting as well.

Makes me feel old that the women are no longer around...

Yes, the 90s saw the wonderful surge of striking beauties with concrete acting skills in the HK movie industry. The returning Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, Sharla Cheung, Joey Wong, Chingmy Yau, Cherie Chung, all unique in their ways and dazzling. Add to these Anita Mui who was not a conventional beauty yet nonetheless captivating.

All these actresses have their own charisma who refuse to stay pale in the background. They capture and hold your attention on screen.

Competition was so fierce at that golden age that rare beauties like Rosamund Kwan and Michelle Reis have to be the "second-line" actresses then.

Nowadays the "best" we have to offer are good-looking but far-from-stunning actresses with decent acting, or pretty but wooden actresses. None really on par with their predecessors.

Well, at least Gong Li is still hanging around . Maggie Cheung is still acting on sporadic projects I believe.

Michelle Reis was and is still very stunning (modern or ancient attires), but her acting somehow came off as rather weak and wooden. But she was definitely eye candy onscreen.

I would love to see how the rest are doing. Perhaps all happily married with kids. At least to know that they are enjoying retirement. But a comeback would be totally awesome.
