TWISTED Zhang Wuji
TWISTED Xiao Feng
The Zohan can kick both ZWJ and XF asses coz the Zohan said so and the Zohan can catch bullet with his nose-hole and and his finger and you don't want to mess with the Zohan,
OR maybe Ah Zhu IS Sweeper, think about it. She survived for that long, and then dies? How? that seems odd. She was merely faking her death so to solve some issues regarding XF and give him her 'final' wishes. In reality she never did die, and she continued to help him. She disguised herself as the Sweeper in order to dissolve the issue with XYS and MRB, which helped XF. She (disguised as SM) also let her guard down and allow XF a hit because she didn't want to hurt her lover. It's some simple, Ah Zhu IS Sweeper Monk.

He got badly injured by 30% of Miejue's power. At the time, he already had much higher internal energy than Miejue.
He had the lower hand against the 4 elders using Liangyi Swordplay and Liangyi Sabres. He probably would have lost if Zhou Zhiruo hadn't given him pointers.
To be fair, most of the time, Zhang Wuji didn't lose to weaker opponents. But considering how much more advanced his martial arts were compared to these weaker opponents, not losing is hardly a compliment. He should have defeated them quickly.

In professional sports circles, that's called "playing down to the level of the competition"...or "playing not to lose" rather than playing to win. A superior athlete or team actually stands to lose competitions to theoretically inferior opponents by adopting that mentality. Very frustrating for fans and supporters.
Cheung Mo Gei does this...he fights down to the level of the competition, or he fights to not lose rather than to win.
Miejue encounter. ZWJ had no idea of his internal and barely knew how to use it.
ZWJ was still not that good of a martial artist on Brightness Peak. He only really became good after Wudang Mt encounter.
And after that, almost every fight he gets into, he is watching out not to injury or kill anyone to maintain the peace. He deserves to be commended on this. Otherwise we are going to see a Shaolin VS Wudang, Persia Ming Cult VS Central Ming Cult etc...
But the main reason why he got smacked down was that he let his guard down too quickly, i.e. his lack of experience, which is generally true about him.
Don't forget he got injured by Zhou Zhiruo of all people, who tricked him into believing that she didn't have any energy. When he retracted his full power, she attacked, injuring him. Sounds familiar? That's exactly what Miejue did above.ZWJ was still not that good of a martial artist on Brightness Peak. He only really became good after Wudang Mt encounter.
Right, so if he's ALWAYS holding back, always falling for traps such as retracting energy too soon, what makes you think he won't do the same choking against Great-level opponents? And after that, almost every fight he gets into, he is watching out not to injury or kill anyone to maintain the peace. Yes, but even if he did not hold back, he is still prone to traps.
Imagine if Zhou Zhiruo could injure him, and 30% of Miejue's power could strike him down for good (he couldn't get up for some time), imagine what if Xiao Feng had used the same trick to make him retract all power, which is equivalent to attacking himself with that power, and then Xiao Feng follows with a full XL18Z. That's the equivalent of 2 Greats attacking Zhang Wuji at once. If Zhang Wuji fell for that trick, he would be royally screwed on arrival.

Laviathan compiled a pretty long and substantial list of ZWJ choking away fights.
Someone should dig it up.
Laviathan also wrote something about ZWJ having the potential to match XF.
