There are many things called Xiao Longnu. I know for one, a very famous online beauty called Xiao Longnu. You will notice this on the first page of Google search results. Most of them are actually about this girl rather than JY's XLN. On the other hand, there are not many things associated with Z3F and HR.
But Google is hardly a measure of JY characters' popularity anyway.
I'm not talking about popularity, only about fame, i.e who is more widely known. Nowadays there're many wuxia-related communities on the internet, so Google certainly can be used to judge characters' fame. For the online chick that you mentioned, isn't that because the name XLN is so famous that she chose it as her nickname? Whatever, the fact that XLN is more well known than the other JY characters such as HR, ZSF, or YG can't be disputed.
日暮乡关何处是?烟波江上使人愁。
Or maybe the chick chose XLN because its supposed to represent a beautiful woman? And its more well-known than Princess Frangrance so XLN is not a bad choice.
I for one, knew of Z3F, ZWJ, HSDS way before I knew who XLN was.
I am not convinced that Google can tell you the "fame" of JY characters. Not convinced at all. I think you will find it hard to convince others likewise.
That is just wishful thinking on your part. Do not state it as fact.
If you love Google, check out Google Trends. Z3F's search count is 10 times that of XLN. XLN's search count is even lower than YG, ZWJ's and equal with GJ's. You may say that Z3F is not entirely JY and also Taoist etc but isn't that the same for XLN? 6/10 of first page search results for XLN is actually about the celebrity chick, not the JY character.
The most famous Jin Yong character is one impossible to define. I just didn't like the way you pin-pointed it to XLN and claim that it is undisputed.
It's easily Shen Diao Xia. . .Yang Guo. . .

I'm throwing my hat in for XLN.
If we count fictionalizations of real historical figures.....Z3F still wouldn't win.....
Because we have Ghengis Khan, Kublai Khan......and Kangxi...and...and ZBT!!!!!
When I say hero, I mean protagonist only, not any character.
I'm not sure about this.
I guess ROCH's YG/XLN love story is a rather huge pulling factor - attracting many romance novel fans to the wuxia novel. On the other hand, LOCH has its 5 greats too, which are all immensely popular among wuxia fans. Both novels probably have near equal popularity.

Amongst people who are not that familiar with the Wuxia genre, it's probably Yang Guo and then Wei Xiaobao.
Guo is probably the most popular amongst Wuxia fans.
Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nv are very well known.
Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu.
Xiaolongnu is more universally recognized.
All my Asian friends, family, and people I meet recognized her name. Even my little nieces were running around saying Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu names and pretending to be them.
I think from the endless adaptations that the movie industry made over the years.
Obviously YG is the most popular hero at least in this forum 😁😁😁😁
In my country YG I think is the most well-known JY characters thanks to Andy Lau.
In the older generation GJ is the most popular since it is the first JY novel that become hits and also become the inspiration of the next ROCH, HSDS and also QF characters in DGSD.
I myself just thinking GJ is too perfect even I adore his hardwoking and resilience, YG is too melancholic. ZWJ even he is indesicive is the most realistic characters with balance pluses and minuses.
The other novel like I just startly recognize as I grow up
