Personally, I believe the most famous one is Wei Xiaobao. He is extremely popular among women and children, for his youthfulness and playfulness. Even when I explained to a girl friend his rapist behavior, she still likes him.

actually in thailand guo jing is very famous. he's known as a great leader. and his name is used often when people discuss chinese series. so even though i personally don't like that guy all that much.. okay i hate the guy.. but my vote would go to him.

We need to distinguish between fame and popularity, because they're not the same thing. Osama Bin-Laden is very famous in the West, but you wouldn't exactly call him popular.

I know there're differences between fame and popularity. The question of the thread starter is "who is the most famous...?". On the internet, Guo Jing is more widely known than Yang Guo is, isn't that a proof that he is the most famous character?

Edit: It seems that Guo Jing is only famous than Yang Guo to English-using internet users because when I google by their Chinese names, Yang Guo's results pwns Guo Jing's by a large margin.

Jin Yong didn't entirely create Cheung 3 Fung, however. The Cheung 3 Fung character that appeared in HSDS was Jin Yong's interpretation of Taoist mythology and perhaps several conflated historical persons.
