Nice movie, but somehow it reminded me of Huo Yuanjia. Maybe it was that fighting stage. But what I didn't like was how quickly and easily the Japanese general got pwned, since he's supposed to be very good.

Thoughts:
1) Jin Shanzhao would make an AWESOME Xiao Feng. He looks rough, but incredibly manly, and his movements seem quick, strong, and ferocious.
2) Martial arts scenes were very good.
3) Very black and white; all Japanese are bad, if in different ways, and all Chinese are good (or forced by circumstance to be bad).
4) Too much mainland editing/fudging of the facts; for example, Ye Wen was actually a member of the Kuomintang, and he fled to Hong Kong permanently after and because of the Communist take over. In addition, they edited out the scene where the translator guy, after shooting the Japanese officer, was mobbed and killed by the Chinese for being a 'collaborator', even though he was just a dude trying to feed his family. This was a scene that was much more nuanced and 'real' than the black and white of the rest of the movie, but unfortunately it was cut.
Overall, very good movie; I just wish it wasn't so black and white. Huo Yuanjia/Fearless, for example, showed at least one honorable and enlightened Japanese martial arts master; the Japanese guy here was 'honorable', but very brutal and not at all 'enlightened'.

1.) Jin Shanzhao is actually played by Louis Fan. The same guy who played XU ZHU in DGSD 96. (and yes, even in that show, he had an obviously much better built body than Felix Wong's Xiao Feng!!!).
2.) I kinda hated those rapid short punches.
3.) Been complaining about that since I saw the movie.
4.) Heh, and before beating the Jap General to a pulp, he was making this long monologue on how Chinese kung-fu is based on Confucian thinking and compassion!!!
Its BIxie Jianfa Gawdammit you guys!!!!
Well, he didn't KILL the dude at least, right?
But dude, I totally want to see a Louis Fan Xiao Feng. Intimidating as all hell.

Oh, he was definitely likable; he was Chinese, after all. His voice damn near broke when he whined that Ye Wen was trying to exterminate him when he raided the factory a second time. He wasn't a 'baddie', but his demeanor, especially in fights, was nothing short of badass, although of course he had to undergo a jobber aura to Ye Wen.

Hehe I liked Jin Shanzhao too. He behaved like a child sometimes.
Agreed. The accuracy wasn't there and it's quite a disappointment in its own way.4) Too much mainland editing/fudging of the facts; for example, Ye Wen was actually a member of the Kuomintang, and he fled to Hong Kong permanently after and because of the Communist take over.
There's actually such a scene?? Why did they delete it? It would really be a good touch to the movie! In addition, they edited out the scene where the translator guy, after shooting the Japanese officer, was mobbed and killed by the Chinese for being a 'collaborator', even though he was just a dude trying to feed his family. To my understanding, that scene was 'harmonized' (a catchphrase these days) at the 'request' of China's film oversight authorities, as they didn't want the movie to portray Chinese people attacking other Chinese people. Likewise, Jin Shanzhao originally had a really thick, authentic Shandong accent, but because they felt that would 'hurt the feelings of Shandong people', it was changed to a much more neutral accent.

I was discussing about this movie with a few friends of mine at a dinner last night. Donnie Yen is the best candidate for this movie. He is seemly using nano seconds to do the Wing Chun punches. Amazing arts!
That martial art itself very much interests me.

I thought the Japanese did not give Ip Man the ultimate fight the movie was building up to in the end. He was almost powerless against Ip Man.

Great movie, really inspirational but then what's the difference between this movie and fearless other than two different characters doing the same things in different parts of china.
I like the character of Ip Man, a very calm and cool natured person. A nature like the water stream, reasonably flow it's way through with no resistance.
I also enjoy the part where Ip Man taught the southern villager guy a lesson. First, a defensive move. Second, displays what Wing chun can do. Third, teaching a rogue a lesson with a farther(sp?) duster. Brilliant!
Though I did took pity on the rogue guy when he actually sounded out his background to support his behaviour.
Ip Man distincts the manner of a gentleman from a coward and henpeck.

A little off track, Who would you think would win if Ip Man and Huo Yuan Jia challenged each other?
According to the movies, Huo looks way more powerful and multi-skilled.
