Emperor of the Sea (해신 Hae-sin, lit. Sea God) is a 51 episode South Korean epic drama that aired in 2004 on KBS2. The show focuses on the life of famous historical figure, Jang Bogo (장보고), who was born a slave but rose to the highest ranks of Silla society.

Jang Bo-go (Choi Soo Jong) was a slave from Shilla (a Korean dynasty that lasted from 57 B.C. until 935 A.D.) He was sold in China during the Tang Dynasty, where he was trained as a gladiator-slave. Through hardwork and perseverance, he made it back to Shilla and became a successful sea merchant. The sea passage at the time was plagued by pirates and Jang Bo-go went head to head with them in battles and managed to keep the pirates at bay. This epic drama tells the story of a historical figure blending it with intrigue and battle of wit to make it into a successful drama of all times.

The film managed to earn many awards at 2005 KBS Drama Acting Awards. The drama is one of the dramas of 2005 who said to have been "decorating 2005 KBS Acting Awards ceremony".

The DVD sets (with the english subs) are expensive, (80-100$ + ) but the series is really worth it especially if you are into historic dramas. The series won lot of acting awards as well. At 51 episodes, it's one of the biggest epics from KBS.

Someone posted the first 10 episode of this subbed on veoh.com under the title "Sea God". However it looks like they're not planning to add more.

This drama is my all time favorite.

If you like Korean sageuk/historical dramas, this is a MUST SEE.

This is definitely a series well worth watching. This is the series which catapulted Song Yi Go (Jumong) to stardom. Stellar acting by both male leads and the villanous Lady Zixia.

I hope the leading gal could be better. She feels a bit too mature and depressed in her role.

Fighting scenes are quite well done as well.

No. She is the love interest of both men. But the lead character was Lady Zami. Afterall, it was a show about Zhang bogo Vs Lady Zami..

The "bad" people are still around. The king is still young. Zhang's son is alive, lady ten hua around, zhang's foster daughter who supposedly to marry the king is also alive. And who knows - Lady Zami may still be alve right?
