Question Actors and Their Signature Role(s)

Name an actor and his signature role in a drama. By this, I mean the one that made him famous or one you would most recommend to others so they have the best chance of appreciating his talents/versatility/looks/etc. as much as you might. Some actors may have more than one.

I'll start with examples using some of my own favorite actors:

Bao Jian Feng - Gu Yue Tao in Shi Ba Sui De Tian Kong (Sky)
Shen Xiao Hai - Tao Zui / Tao Ge Ge in Hua Gu Zi
Tang Guo Qiang - Zhuge Liang in San Guo Yan Yi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms) 1994 and Yong Zheng in Yong Zheng Wang Chao
Wallace Chung - Gu Xi Zhao in Ni Shui Han and Zhui Ming in Si Da Ming Bu (The Four Detective Guards)

I took notice of these actors after I saw them in these roles:

Huang Hai Bing - Shen Lang in Wu Lin Wai Shi
(He usually acts as the suave swordsman but I don't understand why he has so much makeup on )

Shao Feng - Shi Jin Tian in Pi Li Pu Sha
(A versatile actor but he seems to have even more makeup than Huang Hai Bing )

Qiao Zhen Yu - Owyang MingRi in Xue Hua Nu Shen Long
(He stands out in this show because this character is more complex and the male lead is a dull guy with ugly curly hair)

Zheng Guo Lin - XiaoJiang in Jue Shi Shuang Jiao
(This character is cool and he looks very shuai in this show)

Zhao Hong Fei - Yun XiaoXiao in Feng Zai Jiang Hu
(Very charming in this show, in terms of looks and character. Don't understand why is he casted as the bad guy in most of his other shows)

Yu Bo - Lian Cheng Bi in Xiao Shiyi Lang
(I didn't like the story of the male & female leads so to me, this evil character is the highlight of the show)

Shen Xiao Hai - Wang Long Ke in Da Tang You Xia Zhuan
(Can't remember which is the first show I saw him in but I like his role in this rather enjoyable show)

Hi Lady Zhuge, thanks for starting this interesting thread. Here are some of my favourite actors in ancient series :

    Qiao Zhen Yu
-Xu San Yuan in Hang Hang Chu Zhuang Yuan - really cute and adorable as the bumbling and guileless hero who frequently runs head long into danger.
-Qin Feng in Princess Shen Ping - really dashing and is very believable that the princess starts swooning over him.

    Zheng Guo Lin
-Li Shi Min in Heroes of Sui and Tang - charismatic and regal, with quiet dignity and humility.

    Bao Jian Feng
    - Kang Xi in Qing Tian Ya Men - had the presence of a king and looked very handsome and dignified.
-Su Can in Qiang Qiang Er Nu Dao Jiang Hu - as the comic relief.

    Yuan Hong
    - Hong Li in The Prince's Study - cool and collected - must confess that I fell for his dreamy eyes .

    Wallace Chung
    - Nalan Xing De in Kang Xi Mi Shi - liked him in all of the series I've seen him in but his acting here is just great - manages to invoke a certain vulnerability.

    Li Yuan
-Xu Tianhuang (7th brother) in The Book and Sword 2008 - smart and resourceful - this is the first series I've seen him in and his comical scenes here are some of the highlights of this series.

For me, his signature role is Sai Hua Tuo in Xue Hua Nu Shen Long. I guess a lot of this depends on what we see these actors in first.

    Zheng Guo Lin
-Li Shi Min in Heroes of Sui and Tang - charismatic and regal, with quiet dignity and humility.
Totally agree. I loved his Li Shimin in this show.

Bao Jian Feng- Kang Xi in Qing Tian Ya Men - had the presence of a king and looked very handsome and dignified.
-Su Can in Qiang Qiang Er Nu Dao Jiang Hu - as the comic relief.
Bao Bao's Kang Xi is one of my favorites of his roles too.

Yuan Hong- Hong Li in The Prince's Study - cool and collected - must confess that I fell for his dreamy eyes.
Mmm...it's Yelu Xie for me (although admittedly, SNYJJ is the only thing I've seen him in thus far).

    More actors. All Japanese.

Sakai Masato - Yamanami Keisuke in Shinsengumi!, Iesada in Atsu-hime. Although I have to say that I first took notice of him in a relatively minor role in Triangle - he spoke Chinese in there, albeit not very well.

Tsukamoto Takashi - Ani in Kisarazu Cat's Eye, Gamo Shinobu in Manhatten Love Story, Murakami Eiji in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko

Domoto Tsuyoshi - Kindaichi Hajime in Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo, Shinoda Natsuo in Summer Snow

Karasawa Toshiaki - Zaizen Goro in Shiroi Kyoto 2003, Maeda Toshiie in Toshiie and Matsu

Fujiki Naohito - Suga Eiichiro in Love Revolution, Mizuno-sensei in Ichi Ritoru no Namida

Odagiri Joe - Satomi-sensei in Satorare, Kisaki Takeshi in Tentai Kanzoku, Saito Hajime in Shinsengumi! (is there a cooler looking Saito-san out there?)

Fukuyama Masaharu - Nagase Hiromi in Bijo ka Yajuu, Kashiwagi Masaya in Hitotsu Yane no Shita

Yamamoto Koji - Hijikata Toshizou in Shinsengumi!

Haha! You still remember that role, don't you? Suga-san and the pink umbrella. I like this particular line. Kyoko-san asked him how come nothing ever happened when they spent the night together and Suga told her he forgot. Why? Because when he's with her, he's too happy to remember anything else.

For signature role, I'd choose only one from each actor based on acting.

For me, these are the signature roles:

Zheng Guo Lin - Xiaojiang in Legendary Siblings 2.
(Beats out Li Shimin, Dong Yong and Tie Zhongyu)

Yuan Hong - Yelu Xie in Young Warriors of Yang Family.

Hu Ge - Guo Jing in LOCH 08'

Jiao En Jun - Gu Yun in this old movie call Xin Yuan Yang Hu Die Meng.
(Notable roles: Liu Shijie in Wo Ai He Dong Shi, Er Lang Shen in Bao Lian Deng and Master Golden Snake in Bi Xue Jian)

Huang Xiao Ming - Han Wu Di in Da Han Tian Zi trilogy

Shen Xiao Hai - Definitely Tao Zui in Hua Gu Zi
Also love his villian role in Wu Yan Nu

Wallace Chung - Ni Shui Han, though almost every role of his is a signature role. I have a feeling his role as Murong Feng is going to beat out Ni Shui Han

Li Zonghan - Zhang Laifu in Chun Qu Chun You Hui - China version of Count of Monte Cristo
(I fell in love with his character as Wu Guanlong opposite GYY, but that role was too minor)

Tang Guoqiang - The one and only Kong Ming

Chen Daoming - Pu Yi in The Last Emperor

Li Jie - Ouyang Feng in LOCH 08'

    Japanese actors

Domoto Koichi - Inspector Himuro in Remote, opp Fukada Kyoko

Gackt - Uesugi Kenshin in Furin Kazan

Matsu Jun - Shin in Gokusen
Also recommend his role in Kimi wa Petto

Matsuda Shota - Akiyama Shinichi in Liar Game series

    Eita - Ando in Unfair

Kenji Sakaguchi - Dr Asada Ryutaro in Iryu series

Takuya Kimura - Sena Hidetoshi in Long Vacation

    Korean actors

Bae Yong Joon - Shen Dongxian in Hotelier

Lee Min Kee - Jiang Taifeng in Dalja's Spring

Ji Jin Hee - Inspector Min Jung Ho in Dae Jang Geum

Joo Ji Hoon- Prince Shin in Princess Hours
    Also recommend The Devil

Gong Yoo - Park Tae In in Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy

Rain - Kang Bok Ku in A Love To Kill (however, I do not recommend the story)

Felix Wong - Guo Jing in LOCH 82
Andy Lau - Yang Guo in ROCH 83
Tony Leung - Between WSB in Duke of Mount Deer or ZWJ in HSDS 86. I'd say he gets more recognition for WSB.

Michael Miu - Between the villian YK in LOCH or charming dashing handsome Chor Lau Heung

Yuang Hong - YLX in Young Warroirs

A Yes, totally! For both series which I have also watched! I think the girl who played Miyuki as Tsuyoshi's counterpart fits in the role too! Maybe it was the influence of Tsuyoshi in a way. Although, that TV "Miyuki" was not quite alike the one in the manga series.

Fukuyama Masaharu - Nagase Hiromi in Bijo ka Yajuu, Kashiwagi Masaya in Hitotsu Yane no Shita
Another yes for both mentioned! I would also add his role as Yukawa Manabu in Galileo

Eguchi Yosuke - Kashiwagi Tatsuya in Hitotsu Yane no Shita! He was the only guy which didn't annoy me with his shoulder length hair.

Sakai Noriko - Hoshi no Kinka and the sequel as Aya. Nori-P was completely when she even performed the two songs to the Hoshi no Kinka 1 & 2 while in the 2nd song she performed with the sign language.

Takenouchi Yutaka - in Dekichatta Kekkon as Hirao Ryunosuke.

Sorimachi Takashi - as Onizuka Eikichi in GTO

Esumi Makiko - in Shomuni as Tsuboi Chinatsu

    HK Actors

Dicky Cheung as Fong Sai Yuk in the TV series Young Hero Fang Shi Yu, and in TVB's Journey To The West as Sun Wu Kong.

Benny Chan Ho Man as Ne Zha in TVB's Feng Shen Bang.

Jet Li in the Wong Fei Hong movie series.

Andrew Lian Kai as Yang An in The Yang Lady Warriors.

Carmen Lee as Yang Ba-mei in The Yang Lady Warriors.

Some other that I don't think anyone have mentioned are:

Lau Dan as HQG in LOCH/ROCH 83/84 and 94/95
Barbara Yung as Huang Rong in LOCH 83
Erika Sawajiri as Ikeuchi Aya in 1 Litre of Tears (super sad)
Joey Meng as Ma Siu Ling in MDWAV
Lam Ching Ying as Mao SiFu in Vampire Experts I/II
Yoon Eun Hye in Goong and Coffee Prince

I think that's because this is a thread made for actors in the first place.

Anyway, good to mention the actresses as well. Vicki Zhao as Little Swallow is definitely up there.

It's quite shocking to see such a long list of signature roles considering that it's only one or two roles in an entire actor's career. Almost forgot the number of shows we've all seen since young. A strong reminder that showbiz doesn't really have any limits.

Ah, thanks for the reminder. I often mix these two up.

Thought the chemistry btw both of them was pretty good too.
