Default Should sex selection be permitted?

My answer would be YES but not free. People should pay for it and can't use it to claim tax what so ever. Healthcare should not cover it. At the moment, sex selection is illegal in Canada, but they can go to the US to get it done. I personally don't see anything wrong with it. It's simply give the couple what they wanted and harmless to anyone else.

It opens a can of worms. Where do we stop? Is it really harmless to society?

What has sex selection got to do with cloning?

reprogram the human race to want daughters, until balance restored.

When the population of any sex becomes out of hand, then people will realise sex selection is a bad decision and it's probably too late then.

I'm sure they will come up with innovations such as rape, kidnapping or wife-trading.

it's genetic engineering. the first step and cloning would be somewhere further down the line. but where do you draw the line? choose what sex, which genes to pass on etc.

I guess my answer to the OP is no - Because where do you draw the line?

I just realized that I have started this topic awhile ago.
    http://www.spcnet.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=21664

Even if 100% of them want sons, it doesn't matter. They have every right to choose to have sons. For people who already have 2 or 3 daughters and want to have a son or vice versa, if they use sex selection to get it, what harm do they bring to society? Why do they have to live in misery of having no sons/daughters just to satisfy other people beliefs? Allowing sex selection would greatly reduce sex selective abortion and infanticide. This is one of the main reason I dislike liberalism. They are all for abortion, sometimes even late term abortion but against sex selection.

TC, you do realise sex selection for the rich will have no impact of the abortion in the poor.

I don't have any stats to back this up but I'm making an estimated guess that
rich people who didn't want a daughter, will more often keep the baby than poor people who got the son they wanted.

This is the society of single where lot of people stay single.
I know lot of people stay single including myself and none of them are rapists, kidnappers, nor wife traders. People who do such things aren't because they unable to have relationship, but because they are psycho. Paul Bernardo is a good example.

I think what you said is pretty much true in most cases.
However, I still believe people should have right to choose to get whatever they want. It's their freedom to choose and that is none of anyone else business. What harm do they cause me or society for having a son/daughter that they desire through sex selection? As for myself, if I am married with 2 chidren with both sexes, then I wouldn't care about the gender of the third child. On the other hand, if I only have daughters, I would definitely use sex selection to get a son or vice versa. I don't think I should/want to live in misery just to satisfy other people's belief.

I assume you are aware that staying single doesn't equate to abstinence from bedroom activity or love relationships.

For now, those aren't occuring because worldwide population of females is still healthy. Once that runs dangerously low, you never know what will happen.

So, where do you think all the psychos come from? It's a psychological thing, remember?

I can see where pro-sex selection are coming from. There's nothing wrong with have a daughter, but it'd be nice to have a son; ditto with the opposite situation.

Hopefully one day the need for one sex will balance it out. Many societies already recognise female as equals to males. And if you have to pay for it, poorer societies with more promale attitudes can't afford to disturb the balance anyway.

I don't know as I am not a expert of the field. The need for sex is not always the case as they can get from prostitutes. Many of them have girlfriends/wives. Paul Bernardo is a good example. He was a popular guy, not a nerd that unable to find a girlfriend.
