Default What's the incentive in joining sects?

I am the first to admit this is a dumb question but it has always bothered me when watching ancient series.

U know those nameless keh leh fehs in tv adaptions who usually guard the doors to the sect leaders' chambers or "gum dei" (forbidden areas)? Well, I've always wondered what's the incentive for them to join sects? I mean, they never seem to learn any kung fu or even get to change outfits.. plus when enemies attack, they are the first to rush forward and get killed with one sweep of an arm...

Worse yet, after they die attacking the enemy, the main/supporting characters just look at each other helplessly without so much as a glance at the corpses of those who sacrificed their lives for them, and you will never see them cry out their name in distress.

"money" was my initial thought... but then, these sects don't seem to be making any money.. which leads to my next question... how do they pay for food, uniforms and other supplies?

was this ever explained in novels?

It's either that, work in a restaurant, a pharmacy, gambling den, government or be a farmer or be a religious person. Pretty much that's what all the generic wuxia jobs fall into.
Or else you're those beggars/bandits that have an even higher mortality rate.

You get to hang out in a big gang and extort money from people with no weapons living near you.

Ocassionally fight with other gangs of people with weapons and cut each other up over territory. And who knows if you are lucky and save your big boss you get to climb up the ladder fast and marry the bosses daughter

Perhaps a sense of belonging and a common identity among the members. Some of them who join are alone as they lost their parents, siblings, etc. Some of them love to fight.

And these guys are the ones who stand in the back when a large group are fighting the protagonist and waves their swords like kids.
You do know that it is just fiction, dont you?
