I am the first to admit this is a dumb question but it has always bothered me when watching ancient series.
U know those nameless keh leh fehs in tv adaptions who usually guard the doors to the sect leaders' chambers or "gum dei" (forbidden areas)? Well, I've always wondered what's the incentive for them to join sects? I mean, they never seem to learn any kung fu or even get to change outfits.. plus when enemies attack, they are the first to rush forward and get killed with one sweep of an arm...
Worse yet, after they die attacking the enemy, the main/supporting characters just look at each other helplessly without so much as a glance at the corpses of those who sacrificed their lives for them, and you will never see them cry out their name in distress.
"money" was my initial thought... but then, these sects don't seem to be making any money.. which leads to my next question... how do they pay for food, uniforms and other supplies?
was this ever explained in novels?
