Default Appropriateness of Gender Exclusive Clubs

So, in Boston, there was a big to do about the governor getting invited to a private men only club for old irish guys, and he accepted and then decline on finding out the club does not allow female members.

Some people have praised his choice, while most think he's gone overboard to try to look PC.

    Here is the full article.

What do you guys think of these kind of private clubs? I personally see nothing wrong with them. There are a ton of women-only organizations, and I see no reason why there can't be men only ones. It's a different story if it were a public organization.

Yeah, I see no problem with that. If the ladies won't let me in the ladies change room then it's time for some retribution.

But what kind of club prides itself on being a sausage fest?

    Who cares?

Clubs and events like this exist quite a bit. There are bands who would play males only or females only shows, so why not have clubs like it too.

yes, there's no question of problems if it's a private function.

though, i suppose the job of governor is pretty much 24/7 so he might feel the need to be overly PC since he's suppose the represet the public? *shrug*

It does raise an interesting question if it is accepted.

If private bussinesses can refuse customers based on sexual discrimination, why not racial discrimination as well.

Then we're back to the early 1900s.

it's not a business. it's a club. it's not like the club pays you to be part of the membership or something like that (most likely you pay them).

of course, most businesses these days do have the right to refuse customer service to anyone they want. though, from the business standpoint, it's probably not a smart move to reject certain groups of customers--hence why you don't see too much discrimination (in areas with open-minded individuals).

The club could be seen as the same kind of business as a restaurant.

Try opening a restaraunt and openly refusing to serve Blacks, Asians and Hispanics. And see what kind of uproar you get, particularly if you add it with snobbery like a fine dining place.

Or if you want a more familiar example, start a bus company that forces Blacks to sit at the back.

there's a difference. in your examples, you sited for-profit organizations. instead of a restaurant, it's like a dinner at your house that you only invite asians to.

or asking your black friends to sit in the back when you give them a ride in your car.

    Okay, here's the legal breakdown:

    1) Restaurants are considered 'public accommodations', ie businesses which are open to the public. Restaurants, therefore, cannot deny someone on the basis of a great deal of criteria, such as race, color, religion, etc. However, restaurants CAN deny ANYONE (the right to refuse service), so long as it cannot be proven that the REASON they denied the service was due to discrimination against one of those protected classes.

    2) Private clubs are not considered 'public accommodations', but 'private organizations', and therefore can deny anyone entrance for any reason, INCLUDING racist/sexist/whatever reasons, in accordance with the First Amendment concept of 'freedom of association'. This is why the Boy Scouts are allowed to deny entrance to females, homosexuals, and atheists, and why organizations such as the KKK are even allowed to exist.

It's the same as why there's female only gyms.
There's a reason for this gender exclusiveness.

Ok, that sounds fair. But the club listed in the original post. Is that like a club like a group? Or a club like a venue?

Club of men who have seen enough of women and sometimes want peace away from them.

This is definitely a case of PC gone overboard.
