im an engineer in the marine sector.

stuff i like about my job: everyday you encounter something different, so the job can be pretty interesting and exciting; plus, i really adored ships.

stuff i dislike about my job: workload can get heavy at times, the need to deal with unreasonable people on occasion

So what does an engineer in the marine sector actually do from day to day?

It might be interesting for people to describe a typical day at work.

    I'll start:

My business card says: Manager, Applications Development

    Today

Sent usage analysis of a soon to be obsolete data vendor ETL process to business manager

Attended a meeting on projects related to our OMS, mostly performance issues and production problems.

Attended a meeting on the status of last week's projects across my development group, and what went to production, and what's planned for this week.

Met with a consultant to walkthrough his performance report calculation.

    Went to lunch.

Reviewed two resumes for an opening in my group. Rejected one, probably followup on the other.

Met with the business manager and the CTO to go over consultant's work and availability. Planned interview process for candidates we're currently reviewing.

Attended a group teleconference with our OMS vendor to address some performance issues.

Researched a nightly process that was picking up stale data, and it's dependency on our main nightly process.

    3 more resumes to review...

    Maybe not an average day.

^_^ Thank you for your interests in my work.
My main job responsibilities is to design ships ~

So a typical day at work is:

switch on the computer, and DRAW. (a quiet day means I do nothing but draw, though you don't always get quiet days)

depending on which stage of the design phase I am in, I would be working on different aspects of design.

    Usually, it starts with

Basic Design ~ usually the basic concept of the vessel would be by the owners, they give the specifications of what type of vessel they want, and we tender for the job.

After we agreed on the basic design ~ layouts and such, the overall hull structure, the engines and the thrusters.

Thereafter we go into the 'detailed engineering design' ~ this can get really mundane, but alot of work goes into here. really, even down to the detail of the last bolt and nut.

There would be times where one has to liaise with owners, subcontractors, vendors, and people from various departments & disciplines to get the job done.

The only thing I need to know is that I don't know anything.

I assume you're using some sort of CAD software for drawing? Does the software have properties for material hardness, tensile strength, density, etc. or do you calculated this stuff yourself? Can you run simulations on your designs for different conditions like wave height, wind, temperature, etc.?

Do you start from some sort of hull templates or are the designs from scratch? Are there any requests for really odd hull designs? How big are these ships?

Yes there are softwares available to perform the calculations. in all honesty, the most manual forms of calculations are usually done either back in school, or you wanted a 'quick and rough estimation' and other times for verification purposes.

softwares that is geared towards marine sector would have features that make it easy for 3d modelling of ships, and usually we would always fall back on the 'good marine practises' for 'standardized' templates. usually hull are shaped in a number of basic varieties, for very practical reasons, depending once again, on the purpose of the vessel.

sizes? that varies, depending on the type of vessel. our yard dealt mainly with specialised vessels. the current one im working on is approx. 150m long, would say thats a pretty small one.

    Doctor. (Anaesthetic registrar)

I provide anaesthetics to patients who are requiring surgery or other procedures.

I see them prior to determine their level of fitness and ilness and determine what anesthesia to give them depending on this and the type of surgery.

It could be general anaesthesia where they will recieve iv drugs and then had volatile (gas) anaesthesia via an endotracheal tube or other airway devices, or it could be a spinal anaesthesia with drugs given into their spinal canal. They might have also a variety of lines and epidurals and nerve blocks as the occasion entails.

The lists might be long, it might be short.

It might be boring, and it might get too exciting.

Everyday is the same and yet different at the same time.

Sometimes, i make a difference in people's life, Othertimes not so much.

And it beats sitting in front of a computer everyday.

    I'm an early childhood educator.

On a micro level, I teach kids aged 3-6, and speak with their parents about how they are growing and learning, and what parents can do to help the kids have a better, richer and more enjoyable school experience.

On a macro level, I oversee the school, keep on eye on teachers/children in all classes and rally parents to be more informed in and participative of school activities.

If all the parents cooperate, all the children participate and all the teachers work hard, I can sit back with a cup of tea and think of more things for everyone to do.

I subedit news articles of the animal feed, crops and livestock industries. Because of this, I get to read many ridiculous stuff that's going on, eg. cows getting arrested (yes that's the word being used), countries having trade fights and companies trying to sue the pants off each other.

Mind me asking what OMS? I'm guessing you're at a buy-side shop?
