Windows Vista 64 bit cannot install many applications

I'm running Vista 64 bit Home Premium. Several applications have refused to install. They're always stuck infinitely at the installation wizard where it says "please wait while the Installation Wizard installs ____".

The latest case is Open Office 3.1. I know it's a 32 bit software, but some people claim it works with 64 bit OS. But I'm stuck at the installation wizard again.

I've ran it as Admin and turned off UAC; did not help.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

UPDATE: Apparently, it wasn't stuck infinitely, as it did install at some point after I left the computer on all night. But it sure stalled at the beginning, for at least one hour, which I doubt is normal.
