Malaysian Eid advert axed for resembling Christmas

A Malaysian television advert for the Muslim holiday of Eid has been scrapped after viewers said it resembled a promotion for Christmas.
Malaysia's TV3 has apologised for airing the festive clip, which wished Muslims a happy Eid al-Fitr, the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
The advert showed an elderly man taking children aboard his flying carriage and travelling across a star-filled sky.
Critics said it was too akin to the tale of Santa Claus and his sleigh.
The clip provoked considerable criticism, much of it from internet and blogging sites, which deemed it insensitive and in poor taste.
It also depicted lotuses, which some complained have links to Buddhism and Hinduism.
The station announced in a Sunday prime-time broadcast that it had removed the one-minute clip and would not show it again.
Muslims, who make up about 60% of Malaysia's 27 million people, are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which is likely to fall on Friday, depending on the Moon.

I never saw it, but my friends said it was horrible. I personally don't like the commercialisation of Christmas with Santa Claus and all that, but it was around way before I was, so I can understand why the Muslims would find the TV3 advert with the beca in poor taste.

The way they are going on about the 1Malaysia concept is just so wrong.

I like the advertisement. It doesn't look Christmasy to me. It reminds me of Walt Disney cartoons, specifically Peter Pan and Aladdin. It's actually a great fantasy theme that brings you back to childhood fantasy.

I don't like the situation in Malaysia now. Everyone is so sensitive regarding this racial issue. Just yesterday, I heard news about a blogger being detained for saying racial things his blog. All these detaining and suspension feels like the beginning of a witchhunt to me. Hope the situation did not worsen. But, of course, Utusan Malaysia still have the 'min sei gam pai'.

WoW! The advertisement was SO CUTE! Like kidd, I was expecting Tinkerbell to make an appearance at any time in the commercial. It was the funniest thing ever to see the old man in his cute little cap peddling the adorable kids in the sleigh...and that was my perspective.

It didn't really remind me of Christmas though...

    That's actually a trishaw.

    The Malaysian Trishaw

    Very Malaysian leh.

Can't see any lotus in the ad, but, there's a pagoda. Maybe if they add some ketupat and a mosque in it, it might be less offensive to the Muslims, dunno.

We have a version in Cambodia called cyclo or cycle rickshaws. I would do that neat thing you did and put a link inside a term for you to click, but I don't know how to do that.

Very easy. Just highlight the term, then, click that icon with the globe and a clip (Insert Link), and insert the link.

I didn't see this scene in the picture you post in the clip on the BBC news. Maybe the clip is incomplete.

Sorry, this is just beyond stupid.

Being culturally correct is one thing.

    Being timid is another.

Remember that Islam came from the Middle East, and one of some famous stories from a golden age of islamic middle east are chronicled in the Arabian nights - where descriptions of flying carpets, genie etc are common.

Btw, with the advertisement, my hometown was shown at the 12 second in the link shown by Ace High.
